I'm sorry to bother you all, however I have an interesting topic that somebody may be interested in covering.

It involves the discrimination of female athletes in catholic High Schools. My daughter is a CHSAA varsity cheerleader in Suffolk County NY. Over the past 2 years I have been attending many of their cheer rallys at sporting events and have had several confrontations with the athletic directors in regards to the treatment of the opposing teams cheerleaders. Regardless of what people may think of cheerleaders, they are now officially deemed athletes. My daughter is living proof of it and I can attest as to how many times I've brought her to the hospital over sports injuries due to cheer, ( probably been to the hospital more times than most of the football players on the school team).

With that being said, the reason for this email is to inform you that it has been my observation as well as numerous parents of cheerleaders, that during sporting competitions visiting cheer teams are often discarded to the side and not given the fair opportunity to cheer for their team while the home team cheer leaders are allowed to cheer on the front line of the stands. Often the visiting cheer teams are cast to the other side of the field where they cannot be observed by the viewing audience or told that they are not allowed to perform at the events. The home teams athletic directors feel that the opposing teams cheer leaders are a "Distraction " to their players. I have had several confrontations with the athletic directors of these schools, eventually to the point where I let them know that I am going to expose them for their actions ,usually at which time they fold and allow the opposing team cheer leaders to perform at the grand stand sidelines.

If you ask almost any parent of a cheer leader in this league, any cheerleader or their coach in the CHSAA association, they will tell you no different than what I have informed you of. These girls work hard and deserve the right to display their athleticism. Anything other than that would be an injustice to the athletic department.

This may seem like a petty and insignificant matter, but if you saw how hard these girls trained and how they are treated so unfairly I think you would find it in your heart that they do need this problem addressed and corrected.
