LONGHORNS 18 LIONS 6
Last year's Ducks didn't look the part (no uniforms) but after a slow start they turned it up vs the new Elm City Lions. Both teams looked sloppy on offense but played stellar defense trading INTs on the first drives. Roland Whitley connected with Yusuf Abdul-Ali for the first score by the Longhorns and Whitley also added 3 sacks in the game from his DE position. Juan Rivera then took over at QB and added 2 more scores. The lions lone score came on a TD run by Shem Providence. Lions may be a bit over matched in this league but their commitment and preperation should be noted.
TROJANS 20 BOMBERS 0
Trojans dismantle Bombers to open the season on winning note. Rob Kurdy got the nod at QB and despite 2 INTs he settled in and found Dell Morris on a deep post to start the scoring, and followed that up with a rushing Td of his own. Brian Chouinard took a tipped ball INT to the house for another score as the Trojans handed the Bombers a goose egg. There was little of note for the Bombers who gave up 8 sacks in the loss (3 each by Joe Burnett and Justin Collins)
GATORS 27 HAWKS 26
I'm not sure which was more surprising....the Gators coming from 19 down in the 2nd half with Akeem Wright QB or the fact that the Hawks who moved the ball at will for the first 40 minutes couldn't do a thing for the last 20. After picking off Wright 4 times and ripping apart the Gators defense for 4 TDs, The Hawks fell in their face midway through the 3rd quarter. Credit wright who found 3 different WRS for scores and put the pressure on from his spot at DE with 3 sacks. The gators may be the most athletic team in the league but will need to shore up the QB position if they are going to hold up a trophy
CHIEFS 31 GOONIES 25 (2ot)
This turned out to be a great game with both teams exchanging big plays. The Goonies are new to the league but showed they can complete with a very athletic receiving core and secondary along with a dual threat QB. The Chiefs aren't what you may have remembered from last year and sported what looked like the best OL of the day. Chiefs QB Jeff Love threw 4 TDs on the day including 2 to talented WR Dave Coggs and RB Sean Bell followed his massive offensive line all afternoon while adding a rushing TD of his own. Goonies QB Bobby Sylvain threw 3 TD passes as well as a rushing TD to lead Goonies. The Chiefs defense tallied 5 sacks, 2.5 each by Frank White and Carlos Luis Velez
