| We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sylvia Houghton. She was truly an icon in Markham/Unionville and was very active in our community. She was a long time sponsor and supporter of the USPL. Sylvia will be missed by all of us. Our condolences to Dave, his father and the entire family.

Future generations will remember Sylvia Houghton’s name. Not only is her name synonymous with the local real estate community — having been a realtor in the area for more than three decades — but it will also be heralded as the name of Markham Stouffville Hospital’s information centre. Recently, Houghton — together with her husband Bruce — donated $1 million to the hospital foundation. “Sylvia Houghton has always supported our hospital when we’ve needed it most,” hospital foundation CEO Suzette Strong said. “They are helping ensure that MSH makes good on its promise of continued excellent, patient-centered care for everyone who walks through its doors, today and well into the future.” Houghton — a farmer’s daughter from Manitoba — worked as a school teacher for more than a decade in Nova Scotia. From there, the family moved to Montreal, then settled in Markham in the early 1970s, when building a local hospital was still a pipe dream. She watched as the initial hospital was being built in the early 1990s, followed by the more recent expansion. “I watched the hospital become bigger and better,” she said. “It’s become one of the best known hospitals in the area.” And Markham Stouffville Hospital is where all six of her grandchildren were born, she added. “I was impressed,” she said of the hospital. “Everybody needs money. Markham Stouffville came to mind. Markham Stouffville was my choice.” The $1-million donation will be recognized with a sign at the hospital’s information centre, the first point of contact for patients and visitors to the hospital. “My name will be there forever,” Houghton said with evident pride, who, through her career, has earned numerous industry awards, including the Luminary of Distinction certificate, Hall of Fame statues, Lifetime Achievement and the Circle of Legends. Having the first point of contact for hospital guests named after Houghton is fitting, since her name has been so well recognized in the Markham community for more than three decades. "They have been long-standing supporters of the community they live in. Throughout Sylvia's long career in Markham real estate, she has touched so many lives of so many families," said Allan Bell, a longtime friend and hospital foundation community relations and corporate partnerships director. "This generous gift will continue to impact the patients and their families of generations to come." The information centre, staffed by hospital volunteers, provides a variety of information and services and is often the first place patients and visitors turn to for help when they arrive at the hospital. "They really embody what makes this community so special,” said hospital president and CEO Jo-anne Marr of the Houghtons. “Their gift will be a wonderful legacy, reminding everyone who comes through the hospital doors of their true generosity and community spirit."
