| Yes, ties do suck, and the 3 run max rule does have it's drawbacks. But for the most part the rule works. My understanding is that the "tie game" rules have changed gradually over the years. Once we got up to 14 and 16 teams and time limits needed to be put in place, rules to end ties became necessary. Ken always wanted ties to be decided on the field if possible, but he also wanted to ensure that all teams were guaranteed enough daylight to get their games in, hence the 2-hour time limit. I'm not sure when the 3-run max rule was implemented, but it was a last ditch effort to give teams at least one final chance to end the game with a winner without it taking more than just a few minutes. I know some amateur/collegiate leagues use this rule so that is where it came from, it wasn't just something Ken made up.
This rule, like all rules, can be discussed and potentially changed during the offseason. But for now it is probably the best rule we have to ensure teams have a chance to finish their game with a winner while also guaranteeing the teams on deck get their games started as close to "on time" as possible.
