Guys not sure if you have aware, Andrew Lawlor was in a bad motorcycle accident yesterday. Luckily, he has survived the accident but is in critical condition at Sunnybrook Hospital. He has had first surgery and when his blood pressure rises he faces a number more surgeries. His wife is optimistic but right now its very critical.

Feel free to let everyone know of Drew?s status and ask for prayers for him and family as they will need it. This is a very difficult time for them.

Currently Drew is in a real fight. Doctors have him in induced coma in order to take care of all of his injuries. The optimistic reality is hospital 2-3 months and a good long year of rehab but likely his sports career is done. This is best case. Right now he has had surgery to repair femoral artery but his femur and hips are in bad shape and having a hard time with blood flow. Good news from Lesley is that Drew never sustained any head trauma or spinal injuries, so ? that is positive. He is at Sunnybrook and when I get an update I will let anyone who wants to know and when we all can visit. It?s a horrible tragedy. Thanks for your support.

Keep him in our Prayers boys!

Hi Everyone,
Below is an update from Lesley (Drews wife) via text.

Stable enough for surgery tomorrow.
They are going to try and do all the repairs hip pelvis leg and maybe arm is they can stay stable.
They also need to close 2 big open wounds that they created to relieve pressure in the leg.
At this point there is no need to amputate as the leg is starting to show signs of life and so is he.

Thanks so much for your email regarding your support for Andrew and his family. I know Lesley and the boys will appreciate the photo and your offer to help.

Andrew is supposed to be having surgery this morning to repair his pelvis, femur and possibly his wrist if he is stable.

I have set-up a distribution list to send updates as needed and I will add your addresses to my list. Please feel free to forward these updates to the leagues as you see fit.

I am also researching an on-line resource to coordinate meals for the family and I will send this info later this week for volunteers to sign up. I need to confirm a few details such as drop-off arrangements and food preferences first. Food has been organized for Monday to Thursday this week.

Your thoughts, prayers and good wishes are appreciated at this challenging time.

Hello,

I just spoke with Lesley. She said the surgery went well today. It was very long (7.5 ? 8 hours) and due to the complexity, they were only able to operate on the femur/hip issues.

She said they will wait 2-3 days and then they will operate on the pelvis and wrist. Andrew?s foot is swollen so they don?t know if it is broken as well.

So overall, successful surgery today.

Keep Andrew and family in your thoughts and prayers.

Lesley would appreciate food for the family and I will send out a sign-up sheet as soon as possible. The sign-up sheet will only be for the month of August because her needs may change over time. She will also need support over the months ahead.

If anyone would like to be added to this update list, please email me.

Regards,

Julie

Day 1 marathon according to Les. Over 7 hours of surgery but could not fix everything as it was more complicated then expected. They still have to go back to work on the pelvis. Likely will wait 2-3 days before going back in. Andrew is fighting hard so we should all be positive and optimistic.
They have fixed the hip socket through to the knee. He was badly broken.
Small steps but all positive ones. Spread the word of hope

Yesterday was not a bad day, which means it was a good day. You will hear this term regularly throughout the coming days and weeks. No change is not a bad thing right now. This is a long journey we are all on with our husband, nephew, cousin, brother, friend, colleague, teammate and simply one of the most fantastic, talented and brilliant people I know.

Back to the update. No change at the end of day. Andrew is still very sick (that is the term Andrew's caregivers are presently using). There were no procedures to note and his stats are stable. He is continuing to fight and show the strength we all know is at his core. Out of respect for Andrew I will not share on this email details too intimate. I do promise to share important steps and milestones. Of course I encourage you all to visit with Andrew and spend some time with Lesley when you can. Any face or voice that isn't mine will be welcome, for them both.

On behalf of Andrew and Lesley, thank you for all the support and love you have shown since that awful moment.

In closing, if you truly want to encourage Andrew T Lawlor's recovery, send your 'thoughts and prayers".

To you Andrew. You are my friend, my brother, my hero. Fight the fight I know you will win. I love you.

Last night was talking to a friend at ball...yes I have 1 or 2 and he suggests a Parking fund (he is a Doctor) ..wondering if Football group can take care of this for Lesley? Your thoughts? Thank you all again for your kindness, generosity and support.

Hello All,

Thanks for the overwhelming response to the volunteer sign-up to bring meals for Aidan and Callum. Greatly appreciated. Lesley said the meals she has received so far have been very helpful.

I wanted to confirm that the Lawlor?s address is nineteen Linda Way.

I have added a few more volunteer opportunities to the signup list. It would be helpful to have a volunteer bring groceries to the Lawlor?s on a weekly basis. A grocery list will be provided and the list will have staples (i.e. milk, bread, eggs) and grocery items on it. The groceries will complement the meals provided for the boys. Similar to the meals, please put the groceries in the garage. There is a fridge for the cold food and clear boxes with lids for the non-refrigerated items. The garage code is 1961.

https://www.volunteersignup.org/M7AWW

Also, I have put a small box with a blue lid labelled ?correspondence? in the garage. Feel free to put greeting cards, gift cards and letters into this box.

I spoke with Lesley this morning and she said that GAS gift cards would be very helpful.

Regards,
Julie

Hi Everyone,
Before you read further. The quick update. A stable day with no marked changes.

Read on as you wish and please share any comments back that I can send to the Bcc: distribution.

Shortly I hope to publish a website to the domain I acquired today veryunique.ca (squarehead.ca and irregarless.ca were taken). This will be to provide updates to all as well as a forum to share your thoughts, stories and well wishes. Now if I can just figure out how to create a website.

To Andrew when you read this and his talented colleagues at Livewire forgive the grammar, spelling and overall lack of creativity. Numbers are my thing, words not so much.

Most of you should know me, either directly, or through some unfortunately embellished stories. Irregardless (that's for you buddy), Lesley and I wanted to start an email distribution to provide updates on Andrew's status. Your email addresses are protected and will not be shared. Please disseminate as you wish.

August 7 Update
Cautiously stable is the phrase for today. That is the term the Sunnybrook staff are using. They continue to work on the infection that was so critical on the weekend. I hope to soon bring you more positive and progressive updates. We are not quite there yet.

However, I remain cautiously optimistic. Optimistic we will not see any major setbacks. The road ahead is still rocky and the challenges immense.

?We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.?
Martin Luther King Jr.

Not sure I?m smart enough to fully appreciate that quote, but it seems appropriate today.
Hope is an interesting thing. I tell my sales people all the time, ?hope is not a strategy?. Which is an interesting statement itself. To me hope is actually the place between planning, execution and results.

Andrew?s care givers have built a plan, they?ve executed on it and now we all hope the result is a successful one. Others will call it faith. Either way the thoughts are positive, which is what we need now and going forward.

Now keep in mind. I am sleep deprived, not thinking clearly and likely rambling.

A few closing points.
Thank you all for the continued outreach of support for Lesley and the boys. They appreciate more that words or hugs can communicate. They will continue to need the help of this very carrying community.
Please continue to send Les your notes, texts or calls of support and encouragement. They are a nice distraction and reminder of all the wonderful people in her and Andrew?s lives.
Finally, thank you all for your allowing me an outlet through these daily updates. I realize you only want the status updates. But for me, these updates are also therapeutic.

Can?t wait for him to read all this and provide me his ?notes?.

Have a greater night everyone. Keep the thoughts and prayers coming.

Bill

August 10 Update
Good Evening,
I update you today with a little more positivity. Andrew?s excellent nurse Maryann turned down his sedatives today. Andrew was much more responsive. He is still on some very strong pain medication and therefore very dopey. But he was able to nod and blink to simple questions. His vitals are getting stronger every day. Concern for infection is still very real as are numerous other potential issues. But he is fighting and showing those little improvements we have all hoped for.

Keeping the update brief the last couple days to give you a break from my ramblings. I cannot promise that will continue, so prepare yourselves.

August 12 Update
Hey everyone. Sorry there was not update yesterday. Took the night off from email. We have Les and the boys over for a bbq with some friends. Great food, conversation and laughs.
Lots to update you on today.

First and foremost. Happy 24th anniversary to Andrew and Lesley. Crazy I still remember the wedding day vividly, including Steve losing various pieces of his tuxedo between the restaurant and my house.

Over to the update. Going to use point form to keep it clear and concise.
? The operated on Andrews right wrist today. Put in a temporary plate to give the bones the time and strength they need to heal.
? He came out of the surgery strong.
? He is very alert. Les has been with him all day. He is responding well to simple questions using head nods and shakes
? Andrew is showing fantastic progress.

Now the next part of the update. We are very quickly moving to the next phase of Andrew?s recovery.
? Increased alertness will quickly lead to many questions. And many direct but challenging answers
? To give Andrew time to process the magnitude of his accident and to focus on his recovery, Lesley, along with Andrew, have decided to limit his visitors.
? We have provided a list of people to the critical care team who will be able to visit with Andrew.
? This does not negate visiting the hospital and spending time with Lesley. She needs your support as much now as over the past 2 weeks.

As I keep saying, there is a long way to go but the progress over the past few days has been fantastic. Keep the positive energy coming.

August 17 Update
Good morning everyone. Wanted to share some good news with you all. They have moved Andrew from the ICU to their B5 critical care unit. The biggest difference is the B5 unit does not have the 1-1 nursing care of ICU. That means there is less concern for imminent risk. Andrew continues to respond well to the treatments. He is certainly showing his personality and sense of humour (poor staff). That said he is still working to clear the fog of the past 20 days.

Visitation is still restricted to a very short list of people for the time being. Andrew now has control of the visitor list. I?m sure as Andrew gains more clarity and becomes more comfortable with everything that has happened he will open the door to additional visitors.

This is a big step. 20 Days since the accident may seem like a long time. But when you look back at the magnitude of the accident and injuries, it is nothing short of miraculous where Andrew is today. But I?ve learned to expect that from him.

Hope this brings a smile to your day.
Bill

August 19 Update
Good evening all. Well it is now day 23. Andrew continues to make progress. He has moved from the B5 unit to the C5 unit. This is another significant step forward, and in a very short period of time.

BTW, before I continue, I have recently been educated on the oxford comma (as was one of the nurses in ICU by our friend Andrew). Please chuckle as you see fit. So in honour of Andrew I will do everything I can to mis-use that particular grammatical device as well as all comma applications. Cannot wait for Andrew to edit my work.

Back to the update. As I said. Andrew has been moved to C5. He is making excellent progress. We can thank the staff at Sunnybrook for the tremendous care provided and thank Andrew for his fighting spirit. Together they are putting Andrew on the path to recovery. While I did not get to see Andrew today, Lesley spent a great deal of time with him. He was more alert and conversational. With the move to C5 he will be able to work more on the physio necessary to help loosen and strengthen the muscles that have been at rest for 3 weeks.

Visitors are still being limited but will be discussed with Andrew later this week.

Thank you everyone for continuing to keep Andrew in your thoughts. I feel very good about where we are today and the direction things are moving.

Have a safe and productive week everyone. Next update in a couple days.

August 23 Update (Day 27)
The last number caught me off guard for a minute. Cannot believe it has been 27 days since Andrew?s accident.

Everyone. My apologies for not sending an update sooner. Andrew remains in the C5 acute care ward. He is starting some light physio therapy. I am very pleased with his progress. Andrew still has some confusion and delirium but that is expected with the severity of his injuries and the time he spent sedated. In the words of several doctors ?we not sure how he is still alive?. That should if it wasn?t already clear put in to perspective how bad things were. I?m not surprised. As I have communicated many times. I learned decades ago to never underestimated Andrew T Lawlor.

He and Lesley are slowly expanded the list of visitors but do not want too many people yet to ensure Andrew has enough time for rest and physio, 2 key components to his recovery. All his injuries are healing well but they will take time.

Andrew recorded the attached video today. His sense of humour is clearly intact and his appreciate for everyone?s support loud and clear. Please watch and share. He is getting stronger and more clear everyday.

Cheers!

Andrew is conscious now and he has enjoyed Lesley reading him greeting cards, email messages and texts of support. Andrew has also appreciated video greetings.

Going forward, it would help Andrew if Lesley could share with him positive messages of encouragement and inspiration.

Here are some ideas:
In what ways has Andrew supported you in the past ?
What have you learned from Andrew ?
What has Andrew done to make you laugh ?
What are some examples of Andrew?s strengths ?
Positive and encouraging messages would be most welcome.

Messages can be sent via email, snail mail or text to Lesley.

Lesley?s email: Lesley.Lawlor@ycdsb.ca

Home address: 19 LINDA WAY, UNIONVILLE ON L3R 2P9

Hello Everyone,
My apologies for not sending an update recently.

So here we are, Day 43. Since the last update there has been substantial movement.

? Dialysis has been placed on hold. Andrew is showing more kidney function than expected only a few days ago. This is truly excellent news. Good thoughts that this continues.
? Left leg has received final surgical cleanup for proper healing and preparation for a prosthetic leg.
? New development. His left wrist and elbow sustained a fracture. These will be repaired during surgery today. Hopefully his last.
? Physio continues to go well. Every day he is getting a little stronger and a step closer to rehab. Discussion are under way to determine timing of move to rehab. The left wrist will delay that a bit but we expect that to come sooner than later. That will be a huge day for Andrew and for all of us.

Andrew is very much enjoying the positive messaging people are sending. Please keep sending them.

He has also mentioned that when visiting, if you bring food, bring balanced healthy options.
