TOPIC: Where to stand in batter's box? |

| Guys, What is general approach for positioning of standing in the batter's box?
I am shorter and have historically stood near back of mat.
Starting to think that moving forward would not be the worst idea. Reason for this is when I generally pop up a pitch it is of the shorter variety.
Thoughts?

| I stand up in the box, my back foot is almost even with the front of the plate. Historically most pitchers try to hit the front of the plate. When they go deep I take the pitch if they constantly go deep I move back a little.

| I stand towards the front of the plate. I've only encountered a few pitchers who were actually able to match me up on where I stood.

| It took me a while to figure out too. Baseball power is contact with the ball between your knees to your waist, and softball is from your waist to your chest. Then if you can add "cutting" the ball you will be hitting the ball harder and farther than ever!

| Expecting a softball coming in at 12mph to carry the same way as a baseball coming in at 85mph makes no sense...but as much as I've tried to change about my swing itself playing softball, where I stand in the batter's box has been one thing that hasn't really changed at all. I don't know why I haven't really put together that my dry swings that feel like my body is in sync are always swinging at or about chest level.

| When hitters get their eyes, nose and chin behind their belly button in their stance, it means that they are starting in a bad posture and their back shoulder is a little (or sometimes a lot) below their front shoulder. If the hitters shoulders begin uphill (front shoulder higher than back shoulder) this causes a ton of problems in the load and stride and “most” hitters when they get to launch position are even more uphill than when they started and causing an extremely upward swing path.

| Forget where you stand, it is all about the bat.
The bat should not be too long or too heavy for you to have excellent control and feel comfortable swinging it.[1] Bat speed is much more important that the size of the bat in how well or how far you will hit the ball.

| I stand with my back foot even with the front of the plate. My stance is slightly open with most of my weight on my back foot. I also stand a little off the plate, this allows me to get to all of the pitches. On a outside pitch I step with my front foot towards the ball and drive it the opposite way.

| Stance, bat and others are important, but the key to hitting is watching the defensive alignment. Then hit it where they can’t get it.

| Let’s face the facts....pitching and hitting aren’t easy. There’s skill in knowing precisely where on the bat to make contact with the ball. Pitching a strike requires skill, not brawn.

| I've pitched for numerous years and I get considered a good pitcher because I don't walk anyone. However, a "good pitcher" could mean a lot of things to a lot of different people, so in your opinion, how important is a "good pitcher" in slow pitch?

| The pitcher is the most important guy on the field. In this order:
Not walking people is huge! Walks in softball are the worst. You need every out opportunity you can get.
Throwing strikes high/low, inside/out, short/deep is big as well. Getting people to swing at pitches they don't want to swing at is really helpful
Fielding the position, positioning defense, covering bases, cutting off errant throws,

| I respectfully disagree. I hate when pitchers throw the knuckle ball. When it is hit on the screws, it comes out a knuckle and is incredibility hard to catch in the outfield.

| The standard wisdom for choosing a bat is to pick the heaviest bat that doesn't impede the mechanics of your swing. But many batters use bats that are too heavy, forcing them to choke up and sacrifice power and mobility. Start with 26 oz and review the results.

| Take your position at the batter's plate and square your front shoulder to the pitcher. Generate home run power and greater bat-head speed by taking a shuffle step toward the pitcher. Gain momentum by leading with your left arm if you are a right-handed batter and pull the bat through the hitting zone. At the beginning of the swing, let your power arm take over to drive the bat across the plate with as much velocity as you can muster while still maintaining control. Finish your swing with a slight uppercut to get the ball high in the air.
