Elliott Clutch Relief Job Highlights Dbacks 7th Win In a Row
The Mustangs are trying to stay around in the race for a playoff spot, but the first place Diamondbacks held off a valiant Malibu effort in the Snakes' seventh consecutive victory. The 'Stangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Santa Monica rallied to go ahead, 5-4, in the sixth. Malibu tied it, 5-5, and placed runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth. At that point, the Dbacks called on reliever Scott Elliott, who spent 8 weeks of rehab at the Arizona Athletes Performance Institute (oh wait that's Jacoby Ellsbury; Scott just got cobwebs on his arm due to all the complete games the rest of the staff was hurling). Elliott didn't miss a beat, retiring the next 3 hitters. He finished with 3 strong innings of 2-hit relief for his 4th win. In the seventh inning, the Dbacks took the lead for good, 7-5, as 1b Dion Deas beat out an infield single that scored 2 runs on the play. The Snakes 2b tandem of Eddie Barbini and Johnny Ruiz each got 3 hits and SP Keith Metoyer, SS Mike Thompson and 3b Buck Grayson had 2 knocks a piece. In what is becoming a ritual for SM boys, RF Matt Gallant continues to come up with big, game-breaking hits, this time a 3-RBI double in the 8th inning. Hats off to the Mustangs, including the hitting of Anthony Knotts and a strong start from pitcher Jose Pelayo.
