A's Score Twice the Runs on Half the Hits to Down Padres
The A's had all the runs they needed by the second inning, when they held a 7-0 lead. Dave Sturgeon, who threw three shutout innings to start the A's tag-team pitching, also had the big bat, with three hits, including a double. Dave Becker and Greg Whittaker each had two-run doubles in the A's six-run second inning. Eric Cain had a pair of hits to go with his two RBIs for the day. The A's also played nearly flawless defense, hampered only by the odd diagonal bar on the backstop that deflected a sure pickoff throw to first base from the A's catcher.
A tip of the A's cap to a feisty Padres team that had to play with four pool players...and outhit the A's 19-10...led by four hit games from Ray Zoila and Frank Gonzalez, who's knuckleball stifled the A's all day. With better Padres support, this would have been a much closer game.
