Storm Kick Off Season With a Win!
Scarborough - The Scarborough softball team looks like it's going to pick up where it left off last season.
The Red Storm, who won their third Class A state championship in five seasons last spring, rolled to a 13- 0 win Thursday against Biddedford in the SMAA season opener for both teams.
"We won states last year, which was nice, but we're not looking at that," said Mo Hannan, who drove in four runs, with a double and home run. "we're trying to get that out of the rear-view mirro, just focussing on this year mostly and taking it one game at a time. We have tough games early, so we've king of got to get rolling quickly."Scarborough recieved strong pitching from Erin Gules and Hannan, timely hitting up and down the lineup and nearly flawlwss defense in a game that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 12-run mercy rule.
"We had everyone going," said Hannan, who pitched one inning of hitless relief. "It was a good start."
The Red Storm spoiled the debut of freshman pitcher Abbie Paquette by banging out 11 hits.
"when you have a team like that, you can't make one mistake, and even then the way they're hitting the ball, it's amazing," Biddeford Coach Leon Paquin said. "Going through a lineup like that, every batter is a threat."
The last five batters in the order scored eight of Scarborough's runs.
"The thing I was really pleased with today was, you look at the back end of our lineup and you look at the production," Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin said. "We really feel we have a really solid lineup right through nine on the back end."
Giles who pitched the first four innings, limited the Tigers to Alyssa Baldin's third-inning single while striking out three. Hannan, who started the game at shortstop, struck out two hitters.
"we have, really, five quality pitchers," said Griffin, in his 23rd season as coach of the Red Storm. "Any one of them can go out and do the job."
Scarborough sent nine hitters to the plate while scoring its five runs in the second inning.
After Marisa O'Toole sent a one-out double into the gap in left, Megan Murrell grounded a single into left to drive in the first run. Center fielder Mary Redmond, a transfer from Gorham who batted ninth, followed Brenna Kent's double with a sacrifice fly. Two more runs scored on Grace Farnkoff's single and error. Alyssa Williamson's double made it 5-0.
The Red Storm Scored four runs in the third on a run-producing doubles by Murrell and Hannan, Farnkoff's second single of the game and error.
In the fourth, after pitch-hitter Chelsea Damon drove in a run with a ground ball, Hannan pulled a three-run homer to left to complete the scoring.
