Bucs Barely Better Becker's Bunch
The combination of perfect weather, improved grounds, and a hint of spring in the air was the ideal baseball setting for the Griffith Park Pirates to host the South Bay Sidewinders to open the 2012 summer season. Sidewinder Dave Becker and Pirate Mike Bodlovich both pitched out of a number of RISP situations to keep the first five innings scoreless. The ‘Winders took the lead when Costello drove in a leadoff walk in the top of the 6th. Pirates evened up on a three-base error in the ginormous Carson outfield, then DJ Chomyk followed with an RBI triple to give the Pirates a one-run edge, 2-1. Sidewinders responded immediately in the 8th with the first two batters OB and scoring both on Pirate defensive miscues. Bottom eight, Bucs trailing 3-2, Dale Dymkoski stepped in with one aboard and stroked a big shot gap HR into the aforementioned ginormous Carson outfield. Pirates Richey Nash held on for the W through the late inning turmoil.
