Ahern Flirts with Perfecto!
Jeff Ahern, the ageless wonder, flirted with perfection on Sunday. He retired 19 straight Panther hitters before surrendering an infield single legged out by John White with one down in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jeff proceeded to get the next two outs on five pitches. He was in command of all of his pitches on the day going to a three ball count only once while striking out nine. Having the streak of outs broken up and the onset of pain in his lower back, Jeff decided to turn over the game to his battery mate, Tom Zieglowsky. One guarantee, the Warrior that Jeff Ahern is would have had him climbing the hill in the eighth if the "Perfecto" was still intact. Ziggy, with his unusual flare would close out what would be a combined two hit shutout. Kevin Lew-Hailer started the eighth inning with a single which was the Panthers only other hit. Mark Todd fanned 8 Mets in the losing effort. Adam Kipling continued his hot hitting for the Valley Mets with three hits and Justin Collins scored three times. Nice Day Ahern!
