Mudcats Hold On To Give Zack Salmon 1st DNL Win
Zack Salmon's DNL pitching debut didn't go very well in the opening game of the season vs Bowser as he allowed 11 runs in two innings of work. Salmon got another chance on Monday night and made the most of it. Salmon, a 16-year old sophomore from West Mifflin HS, struck out the side in the first inning and carried a shutout into the 6th inning vs Cinello Insurance. Quinn Construction jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Ricky Olasz doubled but got caught in between second and third on Dan Campbell's one hopper to the pitcher. Chris Miller walked and Dom Francia laced a single to left to score Campbell. Corey Rodgers followed with a two-out double, driving in two more runs to take a 3-0 lead. The Mudcats tacked on 3 more runs in the 4th inning as Ricky Olasz smacked a bases loaded double making it 6-0. Cinello Insurance made it a game in the 6th. Salmon gave up 3 singles to load the bases with one out. Ricky Olasz came on in relief and struck out the first batter he faced but the next batter laced a double and cleared the bases making it 6-3. The next batter hit a single to left but Ryan Kandsberger threw a strike to the plate and gunned down the runner for the third out. Olasz allowed 2 unearned runs in the 7th to make it 6-5. With the tying run at second, Dan Laird came in and threw two pitches. Jon Pauley lined one right back at Laird and he snagged it to end the game and earn the save.
