Great pitching & a great come back effort by Cubs in 9th!
Cody Simpson was our starting pitcher on opening day, starting off with an impressive 2 k's and a scoreless 1st inning! In our first inning at the plate, Andre Navarro hit a single into the gap in right/center field, then stole second, but was not able to score and was left on base. The Cubs then scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 1 run in the 3rd (due in part to fielding errors). Alex Donald came in the bottom of the 2nd inning to relieve Cody Simpson who pitched a strong 2 2/3 innings. In the 3rd inning Simpson lead off with a walk, then stole second, but was caught in a run down when trying to steal 3rd! Jerry Aebi followed with a walk, then Ronald Braden followed with an RBI single that scored Aebi and gave us the first run of the game! Additional hits came from both Alex Donald who ripped a double in the 2nd inning, and Nick Hagan who started off the 4th inning with a base hit. Our bats came alive again in the 5th inning when Cody Simpson lead off with a rope double, Navarro walked and Gilbert Osuna roped a single into right field that scored Simpson & Navarro... later in the inning Osuna scored, making it a total of 3 Braves runs in the 5th inning! Alex Donald had a strong & sold performance by completing 4 1/3 innings with 2 K's, 2 walks & 1 unearned run. Jerry Aebi came in to relieve Alex Donald and start the 7th inning. Our bats came alive again in the bottom of the 7th inning when Cody Simpson roped yet another double, followed by Andre Navarro's second hit of the day game that allowed Simpson to score the Braves 5th run of the game! Jerry Aebi coasted through a scoreless 7th & 8th inning with some solid veteran pitching. However, in the 9th inning Aebi got into a little trouble with some fielding & mental errors from our defense that allowed the Cubs to score another run. Aebi continued battling on the mound with 2 runners on and 2 outs, when he hit the next batter to load the bases. The Cubs were now threatening with the bases loaded and the winning run at second, but Aebi with his crafty and veteran experience managed to hold on and get the third out of the game and bring the Braves their first win of the season on opening day!
