Brewers Over RockHounds, 8-2
The Brewers took a long time to put together a serious rally, wasting a strong pitching performance once again from Greg Bertrand. After seven innings, the score was knotted at two, despite the Brewers getting ten hits to that point. But they broke through in the eighth inning. After loading the bases with one out, Raul Verdecia smashed a bases-clearing double to give the Brew Crew a 5-2 lead. Two more walks and the bases were loaded again. Greg Bertrand followed with a walk, and now it was 6-2. The next batter, Augie Alonso hit a two run double to make the final score 8-2.
Jim Fier had three hits on the day, as did Eric Cain and Alonso (two doubles, 3 RBIs). Bertrand and reliever Scott Singleton kept the RockHounds from taking advantage by holding them to six hits and no walks, while striking out 12.
Though great Brewers' pitching prove too much for the Hounds, Hunter Smit picked up a hit and an RBI, stealing 2 bags along the way. Ryan Surina made a strong debut going 1-2 with an RBI single in the 5th. Mike Lundy and Greg Frey made solid pitching performances, keeping the game close through 8 until unearned runs did them in.
The Brewers tip their caps to the RockHounds, a new team in the league, who hit the ball hard and made some sparkling defensive plays.
