Bertrand's Mound Gem, Cain's Double, Brewers Over Reds, 3-1
This was a scoreless duel for five innings between the Brewers' Greg Bertrand (complete game, four-hitter) and the Reds' Adam Springston. But in the top of the sixth, Rex De La Nuez relieved Springston and with one out, Augie Alonso singled and stole second. Then Matt Trites lifted one behind the mound that De La Nuez tried to snag and fell onto a teammate's knee and had to leave the game. Tracy Wheeler, with runners on 1st and 3rd, came in to face Eric Cain, who promptly laced a long double to score both runners. Cain went to third on a groundout and came home on a pickoff attempt that sailed over third base. The Red's only run came in the bottom of the ninth, when the Reds' Phil Ward led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout, and scored on another groundout. That was all the scoring in a repeat score of the previous meeting between these teams, except with a reverse of fortune. The web gem came from Brewers' rightfielder, Mark Behn, who had just come off the disabled list, and needed all his 6'6" to make a twisting, falling catch of a bomb near Birmingham High School's rightfield fence. The Brewers wish a speedy recovery for the Reds' gutsy competitor, Rex De La Nuez.
