York Wins Season Opener

The York Diamonds shook off the rust and came from behind to defeat the Metro Mets 9-7 last night in the Diamonds first game of the season. It was an ugly game as the teams combined for 16 runs but only 8 hits.

Jeff Murphy led the way for the Diamonds going 2-2 with a walk. Denis Hucal provided the heroics with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 5th that gave York an 8-7 lead.

Steve Baumgartner started for the Diamonds and ended up pitching three solid innings. Jamie Parkes was let down by his defense in his one inning of work. Eric Davidson then came up huge in throwing 1 2/3 scoreless inninsg and earning the win. Steve Foley, who had not picked up a ball in almost 9 months came on to strike out the only batter he faced to end the game.

Despite some shoddy defense, York still made a number of good plays including a nice double play started by Jeff Murphy, a great play in the final inning by Denis Hucal, and a strong throw from catcher Mark Pereira to nab a runner stealing.
