Cardinals Force Game 4
The Toronto Cardinals once again showed their character with a must-win 7-6 victory in 10 innings over the York Diamonds last night. The Diamonds still lead the series 2 games to 1. The heroes were many for the Cards as Fil Vazzano had 4 hits and 5 RBI and got the save, Scott Kirkpatrick had three hits, as did Steve Correia who added the game winning RBI and got the win after a rare pitching appearance. Mike Rochon pitched very well, going 8 strong innings.
For York, Eric Foley was his usual self on the mound, going 7 innings and striking out 7, and also going 3-3 with a home run. Jeff Castronaro pitched his best 2 innings of the season and Neil Parekh had 3 hits. Strong defense was turned in by jack-of-all trades Brent Sterling, as well as Rudy Naraine and Neil Parekh. Manager Paul Freeman met with the media briefly and had these comments: "We knew the Cards would battle and they did, they are a great team and they deserved this win. We hit a ton of balls hard that we got a little unlucky on and they also made some good plays. In the 4th we drilled 4 balls and only got 1 run and in the 10th we scorched 3 balls and got nothing. They got a lot of guys on, but scored 4 runs on a couple of weird plays, 2 when an outfielder slipped and fell, and 2 on a little ducksnort down the left field line. Nonetheless they deserved to win to win this game. On the bright side, our pitching and D were solid and it was good to see Eric get going at the plate again."
