Scarborough Wins Western A regional Final
STANDISH — Scarborough High jumped out to an early lead and then rode the pitching of sophomore Lilly Volk to the Western Class A softball championship.
The Red Storm scored three times in the first inning and went on to beat Thornton Academy 7-3 at Bailey Field at St. Joseph’s College to win their fifth regional championship since 2007 – all in odd-numbered years.
Thornton Academy had beaten Scarborough 2-1 in last year’s regional final.
Top-ranked Scarborough (19-0) will play Messalonskee in the state Class A state championship game at noon Saturday at Cony High School in Augusta.
The Trojans finished 16-3.
Volk allowed seven hits, four coming in the fourth inning when the Trojans scored all their runs. She walked just one and struck out 10.
She was aided by outstanding defense, particularly by third baseman Maggie Murphy, who made two leaping catches of line drives.
Scarborough’s relentess hitting attack never let up. After scoring three in the first, the Red Storm added one run in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
The two in the fourth were very important, having come right after Thornton Academy had scored three in the top of the inning to pull within 5-3.
But with one out, Kaleigh Scoville tripled to right and scored when the relay throw went wide of third. Abby Murrell followed with a double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Sophia Burnham.
The Red Storm scored three in the first to take control early. Scoville had an RBI single, Burnham drove in a run with another groundout and Chloe Griffin hit an RBI single.
