Game ends on bizarre single / 8-4-1-5-2-6 DP.
On a perfect afternoon at Kennedy HS, the Tigers put Mike Maglione on the mound to take on the Diablos. The Cats jumped to a 4 run lead in the top of the third and hoped that adding a few more runs would be enough. But they couldn't shake the Diablos who responded every time the Tigers scored with a rally and a score of their own. A gutsy performance by Maglione, who despite not having his best stuff, fought out of numerous jams, leaving 12 Diablos on base in his 7 innings plus.
Entering the bottom of the 8th, and knowing that the clock was expired, the Diablos launched one last rally. Two base hits and a walk brought in a run and closed the lead to four. In came Jerry Aebi to close. A strikeout recorded the first out, but then an infield error re-loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate. A hit-by-pitch brought in the second run of the inning and put the tying run on base.
With the sacks full, Stan Henry then laced a shot to center scoring the Diablos 3rd run, closing the deficit to 2. The throw back to the infield skipped of the 2nd baseman's glove (your's truly) and ricocheted to pitcher Aebi near the mound. The runner on third seeing the ball get away started to break for home, but before he could make it back to third, Aebi had thrown a strike to the third sacker and had a rundown. Catcher Bryan Reaber put the tag on for the second out and then saw the runner on second too far off with thoughts of advancing to third. A perfect throw to the shortstop, Stefan Marks, nailed the last out before he could get back to the bag and saved the day for the Cats.
