Angels Come From Behind to Win It in Last Inning!
The Bucs took an early 4-0, no thanks to Whitehill's (playing right field for the first time since the Reagan Administration)misplay of a 2 out fly ball to right with 2 out. The Angels halfed the lead with 2 in the third. Bucs then scored 2 in the fourth to make it 6-2, but the Angels responded with 1 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th to tie the score at 6. With time getting short, the Bucs scratched out a run in the top of the 7th on a double by Capello and an rbi single by the ageless Ted Betzel to take a 7-6 lead.
With 15 minutes on the clock, Monahan opened the bottom of the 7th with a walk. That brought manager James Gardner to the mound to replace John Schuermann with Herrera, who threw the first pitch to Blakey in the dirt, sending Monahan to second. Then Blakey launched a shot to right for a triple, scoring Monahan to tie the game. That brought Gardner back to the mound, bringing in Luis Meza to face Whitehill, who sent a 3-1 fastball to right for a double, scoring Blakey to take the lead. A base hit by Bonilla plated Whitehill to make it 9-7 (still with no outs) when the clock ran out.
Brian Combs went the distance, looking better than the line score as the 4 runs he gave up in the first all came after 2 outs and a misplay by Whitehill in right and the 2 runs in 4th came on a single to left that hit a hard spot and bounced over Hopkins head in left. It easily could've been a 1 run effort.
The bottom of the order (Monahan-Blakey-Whitehill) really delivered for the Angels, going a combined 7-8, reaching base in 11-12 at bats, with 6 runs and 5 rbi. Edwin Bonilla, batting first for the first time this year, was 2-5 with an rbi.
An exciting, well played game all around with only 3 errors combined.
