Scarborough Improves to 7-0 With Carriero Walk Off in 5th
Softball: Scarborough beats Gorham to improve to 7-0
Scarborough jumps from fifth to first in the Heal points standings by beating Gorham.
SCARBOROUGH — Early in a new season win-loss records can be deceiving.
Scarborough was 6-0 and had outscored its opponents 84-1 entering a Class A game softball game Monday against Gorham, which was 5-1.

The Red Storm lived up to their record, winning 15-1 in a game shortened to five innings.
The win pushed Scarborough from fifth in the Heal point standings to first.
“This was a good test for us,” said Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin, who has guided the Red Storm to four Class A state titles since 2007. “It was really encouraging to see us hit the ball as good as we did.”
After being retired in order in the first inning, the Red Storm scored seven runs in the second inning against Gorham starter Grace McGouldrick. Griffin felt facing a quality pitcher like McGouldrick (4-2), rather than a pitcher who struggles and walks a lot of batters, helped the Red Storm get into a rhythm.
“This was probably the best pitcher we’ve seen at this point,” Griffin said. “We responded well and it is really encouraging for our team.”
Abbie Murrell started the second with a double to center field that just missed clearing the fence. Felicia O’Reilly stroked a two-run single and Chloe Griffin knocked in two more with a double – another shot that nearly cleared the center-field fence – to highlight the outburst.
Lilly Volk and Hannah Ricker also had RBI in the inning.
The game had special meaning for Scarborough. Ricker’s grandmother, Gail Guthrie threw out the first pitch and the Red Storm wore pink shirts and socks to raise awareness for breast cancer.
“We know coming to Scarborough, at their home field and (during) a special night like this that they were going be fired up,” Gorham Coach Renee Whipkey said. “We knew (Scarborough’s) batters 1 through 9 are strong all the way. It was going to have to be a game with no mistakes and pretty much perfect ball on our part (to win).”
The Red Storm put the game out of reach in the third inning with four more runs. Samantha Carriero homered, Courtney Brochu had a two-run double and Griffin had an RBI double.
“We started off strong and hit the ball well and hopefully we will get some momentum (from this game),” said Carriero, who finished 3 for 3 with a walk and four RBI. She smacked a bases-loaded double to make the score 15-1 in the fifth inning. “Our entire lineup did a great job and the pitching was amazing. Overall it was a great game for us.”
Murrell (3-0) picked up the win, allowing only two hits in five innings. She struck out eight, including five in a row to end the game. She issued one walk.
Gorham scored its run in the fourth on an RBI single by Shayla Harris.
“I think Abbie pitched a really great game today,” Tom Griffin said. “They have some very strong hitters in that lineup –they (were) averaging 10 runs a game. We knew we had a challenge today. It is a pretty good accomplishment to hold that team down.”
