Vikings Win Extra Inning Thriller
The Vaughan Vikings staved off numerous potential game-winning threats from the York Diamonds on their way to a 5-4 win in 8 innings in their playoff opener. Emilio Paglia and Eric Foley battled each other pitch for pitch.
York scored first in the first as a Jamie Hatfield groundout plated Kevin Horton who had walked. Vaughan tallied three in the third to go up 3-1 as Julian Testani had an RBI single and then back-to-back sacrifice flies from Sam Galloway and Mike Mastrangelo scored two more.
In the 5th, York had runners on second and third and no one out but Paglia induced a strikeout and two groundouts to end the threat. In the 6th, the Diamonds had guys on first and third with nobody out but could only score once on another Hatfield groundout.
In the 7th, trailing 3-2, Alex Beauvais walked and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. Rich Freeman drilled a single to tie it and then another wild pitch moved him into scoring position with no one out. Again Paglia bore down and got out of the mess to send it to extra innings.
In the 8th, Mike Caicco and Marco Sacilotto delivered the 2 out hits that York could not come up with and the Vikings took a 5-3 lead. Foley went the distance and threw 130 pitches.
Adam Valentino came on to try and lock things down for Vaughan. Steve Correia's 2-out single scored Andrew Greig but the Diamonds could get no closer.
Games 2 and 3 will be tomorrow night in Vaughan.
