A's Pita Has Big Day With Arm, Bat and Glove
With perfect baseball weather at Valley College, the Bandits and A's opened their 2010 season. The Bandits drew first blood and piled up nine hits and five runs in the first three innings. But the A's came back with a big five-run fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead and never looked back on their way to a 13-7 victory.
A's starting pitcher, Joe Pita, survived the early Bandits onslaught by holding them scoreless over the next three innings. He also came up big with the bat, going 4-5 with a double and SIX RBIs. Pita made a reflex snag from the mound on a line-drive from Mike Guise, and he made a long running catch from the 3rd Base position on a foul ball to help close out the ninth inning.
Dave Becker earned the save with a solid three innings of relief. He also contributed a pair of hits and scored three of the A's runs. Billy Anderson also had a couple hits and scored three runs. Eric Cain had a pair of hits and scored twice. Matt Trites drove in three runs on a double and a bases-loaded walk. Matt Bellner had three hits, and after the game he presented Mr. Pita with a "Mikey's Wide Mouth" Player of the Game award.
