A's Strong Hitting and Pitching Tame the Tigers
The A's came out smoking in the first inning with two doubles, two singles, and two walks to take a 5-0 lead. Those were all the runs they needed, as Pat Estrada shut out the Tigers for five innings, and Joe Pita pitched three scoreless frames in relief.
But the A's had their hitting shoes on today and plated 19 more runs on 22 more hits after the first, highlighted by Dave Dawson's three run shot over the leftfield fence (he also scored four runs on the day). The A's smacked 11 doubles, including three each by Matt Trites (3-5, 4 RBIs) and Jon Ross (4-5, 5 RBIs). Matt Bellner also had four hits, while Eric Cain (5 runs scored), David Sturgeon (4 RBIs) and Rudy Beltran (3 runs scored) each contributed three hits. Dave Becker (3 runs scored) and Pita both had two hits. The A's played solid defense, while the pitchers held the Tigers to just eight hits and one free pass.
Doug MacKenzie had two hits for the Tigers, who held their heads up despite injuries to key hurlers in a lopsided ballgame.
