Providence Edges Sharks Ponte Vedra took their gaudy 14-1 record on the road to face the area's number one ranked team and came up just short of posting their first-ever win over the traditional powerhouse. Heading into the game the Sharks had been outscored 406-243 in their previous seven matchups against Providence but tonight's effort was much different. The Sharks led the Stallions 16-15 at halftime but a 3rd quarter lapse proved costly. Veteran Hall of Fame Providence coach Jim Martin slapped an imposing 3/4 zone press defense on the Sharks to begin the 3rd quarter and before the Sharks could adjust, they were looking at a 28-21 deficit heading into the final period. The Sharks committed 7 of their game total 18 turnovers in the third period, turning the momentum in favor of Providence. Both teams had reputations of outstanding defenses and that surely held true in this contest as points were at a premium. The Sharks showed their true grit in the final quarter when they refused to fold to the talented Stallions. The Sharks trailed by five points with about a minute remaining in the contest when a key play took place. The Sharks had a Providence ball handler trapped near midcourt when the whistle blew. The official?s call of a possible offensive push off foul did not go the Sharks way and Providence cashed in both free throws to salt away the victory. Fouls played a huge role in the contest as Providence was awarded 22 free throws as opposed to the Sharks 8. However, in fairness to the officials, many of those fouls occurred late in the game when the Sharks were desperately attempting to create some steals. No Sharks in the low scoring affair reached double figures but Juniors Luke Pirris and JT Kelly were close with 9 tallies each. Despite the loss, the Sharks can still boast of an impressive 14-2 record and are looking for victory number 15 when they host Ridgeview at the Shark Tank this Friday.
