No. 7 Plattsburgh High guaranteed itself a first-round bye in the upcomi ng Section VII Division II playoffs. With a 3-2 defeat of Lake Placid Friday, the Hornets leapfrogged the Blue Bombers and Northeastern Clinton to first in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys hockey standings. Plattsburgh can’t finish worse than second, but the conference champion won’t be determined until later today. Lake Placid, which trails the Hornets by one point, hosts Beekmantown at 6 p.m., and the Blue Bombers control their own destiny. Paul Fine-Lease recorded his second goal with 2:07 left in the third period to ice Lake Placid. “We needed it,” Plattsburgh coach Jamie Reidy said. “We battled hard all year, especially after losing some players to injury. The kids just stayed positive and kept on trucking.” Bjorn Kroes tied the game at 2-all with 2:55 left in the third period before Fine-Lease struck 48 seconds later. The Hornets outshot the Blue Bombers 34-18, and Kamm Cassidy finished with 31 saves. “We carried a lot of the play, and (Cassidy) gives them a chance to win,” Reidy said. “Certainly a crazy finish to the game, with bounces going both ways. “Lake Placid’s an experienced team, and it will be there down the stretch.
