Kerri (Rawlings) Burtner Somerset, PA August 3, 2011 3:55:26 PM Entry ID: 1903548 | Congratulations on a Junior Hub Football League! I wanted to share with you a neat tradition that our Little Eagles Football Program does in conjunction with our Somerset Eagles H.S. Football team. Every year before the first home varsity football game of the season, the Little Eagles are recognized. First the flag teams are introduced one by one by sponsor name and the names of their coaches. Each flag team (grades 1-3) runs onto the field as their sponsor name is called. Then they introduce the tackle teams (grades 4-6) the same way - with the champion team from the previous season being called last. The cheerleaders run onto the field with their respective teams. Once all the teams are on the field the announcer asks the crowd to cheer for the "Future of Somerset Eagle Football" and everyone goes crazy! (Western PA football fever is only outdone by that of Texas, I dare say.) My favorite part is when the Little Eagles make their way to the endzone and form a chute for the varsity team to run through as they leave the field house and take to the turf for the first game of the season. With the little boys in their jerseys and jeans, and the little cheerleaders in their uniforms and pom-poms, it really is a site to see. Although I now wear the orange & black of an Eagles fan, I am.... Always a Hub at heart, Kerri (Rawlings) Burtner NHHS 1993 |
