Greetings! Just came across your web site for the Salvation Army Basketball Association Interstate carnivals. I have some extra details that you might like to update your web site with - Melbourne 1982 A grade Men's team from the carnival program was - M. Asher, G. Bettison, G. Carger, P. Carger, N. Crowden, M. Erdmann, G. Gourd, D. Inglis and J. Rattus (Coach - L. Alchin, Team Manager - G. Hood) - (I can't tell you what the result was, as I was in the Junior Men's team ... from memory, I think we won!). I should have a program from Perth 1982 somewhere around the place so will have to keep looking for this .... If I find this, I'll send through details for this year too. Adelaide 1984 - You have the players listed for that team. SA won the Grand Final 77 - Victoria 70. I have a black and white newspaper style photo, so might try and scan this and send it through too. (At one stage, there was supposed to be a video around of the game ... I wonder where that when too? ... never got to see it, but would love to if I could ... but probably lost in obscurity now!) Anyway, thanks for the memories. Regards, Roger Barton, Member of the winning 1984 SA A grade team.

Editor's Note: Roger, thanks for the heads up on the 1982 and 1984 information. If you have any more details, please send them on. Proud of the past, confident of the future.

Steve, nice to see you are still out playing basketball. Guess some things from high school never change. Take care.

Thought that I would just say a quick "G'day"......and let you add a new town to your world list!!!! Not good news that a couple of teams have fallen by the way side! Now that I am not reffing...I can say good luck to the Thunder in the upcoming season! For now its good bye from a very cold, wet and windy Wellington!

I coached the SA team in the 1979 carnival in Launceston.(Aug 79) Can't remember who was in the team. Seem to recall Peter Carger and Dave Inglis but I may be wrong. We got beaten in the final by Tasmania (4 pts) Great website.

I found myself sitting in the stands last monday watching the Preliminary Final between Arndale and Happy Valley. I observed the umpires, who I believe to be a father/son combination...names I don't know, but I thought did a good job...rather an excellent job! I hope the management appoint both for the Grand Final.

Interesting note - on the unofficial Ben Todd homepage, it lists his height at 117cm, yet the official Thunder player profile lists him as much taller. Is it the same Ben Todd? They sure look the same.

Editor's Note: Well, unless it's a white Gary Coleman, yes, it's Ben. This must be what happens when you stop playing for the Thunder and travel north of the River Torrens. Us? We'll be staying south for a while if that's how it works.

Is there any truth to the rumour that the SA A Grade Men basketball side were involved in "tanking" at the Geelong Carnival a few years back? I seem to recall the SA side going down to both the WA and VIC teams early in the week, but once SA discovered there were bets being made as to who would lose to SA first, the SA side miraculously rises from the basement, and knocks off both of them in the very next game respectively?! Interesting. I even remember one guy going upstairs to throw down one of the biggest alley-oops ever seen in Geelong (since Terry Dozier anyway)! A thorough investigation into this is required before the Bulltopia Shark Classic. And don't you find it intriguing, that during that week in Geelong, the SA team were heard to be saying over and over, and I quote, "Tanks for the memories James, good luck in the Army." Your thoughts Ed?

Editor's Note: Tony, we'll look into this. We're all for conspiracy theories and this one sounds like a ripsnorter. We'll get our bothan spies on to it. Stay tuned for a story or two.

Since when are you allowed to use props in the dunk contest? Blowing out the candle on a cupcake? ARE YOU SERIOUS? Gimme a break! And as for the Superman dude, this guy wants to get himself a copy of Jordan v Bird and find out what a real Superman dunk is all about! I mean, this was a finger roll! They might as well have got Peter Ali out there if it was the Sprite Finger Roll Competition. And as for including your team mates? I didn't see Sideshow Bob getting a pass from anyone at the AIS when he took out the State Carnival Dunk Comp??!! Bring back Kenny Sky Walker, Larry Nance and Dominique, at least they knew how to shake the backboard, and whilst you're chasing them up, grab Tiny Pinder too! Last I heard he was playing in the Californian Penal.

Editor's Note: Too many hours out in the boat have made you an angry man, Chog. We think you need to join the 2000s. Sky Walker, Larry Nance. We're betting you wear happy pants when you're out in the boat, humming away to the latest Michael Jackson song. Hint for ya: he hasn't released one for a long time. Face the truth - the 80s are over.

So where's the mention of Thunder's reserve grade team, the Sumos? Their come from behind, against all odds, never say die win against Westside Warriors in the B grade grand final, to make it 2 wins out of 3 grades represented by Somerton in the grand finals? Yet another grand final win to Thunder and they forget about everyone else. Shame shame shame.

Editor's Note: Tubs, write us an article (and send pictures if you've got them) and we'll publish it. Unfortunately, we missed the Sumos game but by all reports, it was a crackerjackmajetski.

Well done bro's....great to see the boys steal the title from the Happy Valley 'Crop Dusters'. Why are there no Jets comments here...they're usually ripe for a smart arsed comment after a grand final. From all the blokes here in the Top End...well done Thunder. Quick question though. Just where were the cheerleaders????

Well done lads. The community up here were clambering for the Satellite Phone to get news on the Thunder's win. Impressive stuff for a bunch of old blokes. Gotta go now. I've hooked up on a sizeable barra. Cheers from Borroloola!!!

Grizzly Nitro = Sarah Mitchell (how apt).
Not saying mine. Too silly and way off the mark.

hmmm interesting game against those young flamingo lads, surely a team of your calibre could find the heart to get up, and not be beaten by 2 skinny lil girly boys, some old guy with long hair, a footy type bloke who couldn't make a shot and some rich kid, who is much better on the soccer pitch! take a look at your work ethic... and maybe inject some young blood, instead of old former district players you usually get!! thats all todays wisdom from coach G

Editor's Note: Couldn't agree more, Coach G. That said, the Flamingos ran the reigning premiers (Happy Valley Jets) to the wire the previous week before running out of steam, and are definitely improving. Re young blood, watch out for these four players in the years to come (click here, here, here and here for their bios). Sadly, state laws prevent them from playing before their 10th birthdays.

Greetings from Canberra. Hope to be back in Adelaide in time for the finals and to maybe make a guest appearance on court. Ankle rehab is going well and everyone at The Institute says "Hi" to the boys in council orange (aka 2005 carnival premiers).

10 things about London Top 5 bad things 1. Black snot: my nose has become a vacuum for London pollution. 2. Sick people on the tube: just stay at home! 3. The tube at peak hour: I liken it to being in a flower press. Icky. 4. The cold: why would anyone in their right mind want to inhabit this place? No wonder the Brits ended up in Tassie and stayed! 5. The dark: I need a torch to get home, even if I leave work at 4pm! And the five best things about London 1. The London buzz: who knows where is comes from, but it is not going away! I love this place! 2. Pints: pretty good (but not better than Coopers). 3. Sounds, sights and smells: I've seen mushrooms at the produce market the size of my head! 4. The tube: if it is not in peak hour, it is the best invention on earth. AND THE TOP THING ABOUT LONDON... 5. The Natural History Museum: the best fish parasitic worm collection on Earth!

Hi from London! Well, it's been a long time since we were here last but it almost feels like we are home! We have enjoyed our last few weeks in Europe, which had a highlight in Monte Carlo where Joel (Mr I know better than you Dad) disregarded Dad's advice and decided to walk along the edge of the harbour wall, where he stumbled and fell in! It left Amy in hysterics thinking that big brother was going to drown! The only thing that was left hurting was his pride! We also enjoyed our time in Italy visiting Venice, Pisa and Rome - and having the best pizza of our lives! We are now in London for a week, then head to Greece for three days and then Hong Kong for a few days and then home! See you in two weeks!

Just read about the Juniors training session on Monday 29/10. If Greg Smith and Brett Maher are there, you can count me in. Is there an age limit for Juniors? Is it Under-40 or Under-14?

Singapore is DONE! Off to Langkawi Island to sip on some mahitas by the pool. Upon arrival in Singapore, a sense of Adelaide was all around us. We realised that we were in Adelaide 50 years from now!! A great place to visit. The only down side is the 50 container ships sitting off the coastline waiting to constantly dock into one of South East Asia's busiest shipping ports. The shopping malls here are unbelievable. There is a street named Orchard Road and to put it into perspective, if you bundle up Marion, West Lakes, Arndale and Colonnades shopping malls into one building and put that onto Orchard road, then you would be looking at 1 of about 30 to 40 shopping malls that line both sides of the street. We went to Sentoza Island, at the bottom of the country, where we visited Underwater World, rode a luge, went up in the sky tower, saw a 4D movie, walked on Singapore's one and only beach (man made) and looked out of the Merlion through its head. Was a great day apart from the torrential rain that lasted about 2 hours. Have to mention the massive TV screen opposite the hotel on the side of a building - 3 stories high!! Have to go now. Got a plane to catch at the home of the new A380 air plane (the walkway to get on the plane is at the second level - go figure!). Bye for now! Off to Langkawi to detox! Nick the g(r)eek!
