MALVERN, Pa August 15, 2017 9:34:18 PM Entry ID: 2084876 | I was going through the memories my Mom kept and came upon a small clipping from a newspaper back in the 1950s: Cubs Defeat Tigers in Kensico Thriller: The Cubs took the measure of the Tigers, 5 to 4 in a Kensico Little League thriller yesterday. Billy Bell, who came on in relief of Steve Broege in the seventh, was the winning pitcher. Two-baggers were clubbed by John Barnabec, Steve Broege, Billy Fretwell and Jim Hunter. Rookie shortstop Bruce Chambers (that's me) starred in the field. There is no date on the clipping, but it was from around 1959 or so, since I was on the Cubs with Steve Broege who posted that he was there from 1958 to 1961. It was my first year at that level. I remember Steve because he was a star pitcher and I was always glad he was on my team and I didn't have to face him. Kensico was a great experience,and even now at 66 years old I am grateful for it. |

The parents that were involved then R B and Pat Henry, Harry and Charlie Stotz, Bill Perrin, Bill Fretwell, Marty Barnabec, Fred Broege, Barney Moravec and so many others, did an unbelievable job of providing us kids with a magical baseball experience. Thanks to all of them and the current parents who continue to provide Valhalla with one of the finest Little Leagues around. Steve Broege (1958 - 1961) PS: I believe I still have the record for having surrendered the longest home run ever hit on that field to a player by the name of Bruce Weinstein. |

I PARTICIPATED ON THE YANKEES TEAM IN 1952 THE YEAR THE LEAGUE WAS ORGANIZED. GAMES WERE PLAYED ON THE NORTH WHITE PLAINS FIELD. THE FOLLOWING YEAR 1953 WE PLAYED ON A NEW FIELD THAT WAS BUILT ON LEROY AVE. THE PROPERTY AT THE TIME WAS OWNED BY TOWN JUSTICE MR. CATERSON. HE DONATED THE USE OF THE PROPERTY TO THE LEAGUE. ON OPENING DAY OF THAT YEAR I HIT THE FIRST HOME RUN ON THE NEW FIELD. JOHN ZIVERSACK WAS THE PITCHER FOR THE CUBS.SOME OF THE PLAYERS ON THE YANKEES JOE ROCCO / LARRY BENDER / JACK LOMBARDI / JOHN CARL / JOHN ALLEVI / ROBERT GLASHIEN / DANNY ODERIFERO / RALPH CARL / BILLY BEATON / DAVID JAEGER . Have an album with newspaper articles, of games played, league photos at Babe Ruth's grave site, team photos taken by my dad and Bernie Henry our coach, along with Charlie Stotz.
