2014 Grand Championship Playoffs - Semifinals and Finals

Defending LOL grand champion Pewaukee will travel to New Berlin on Labor Day (Mon Sept 1) to face the host Lakers in the championship game of this year's LOL grand championship playoffs. Pewaukee advanced to the championship game by eliminating Cedarburg 10-4 while New Berlin eliminated Burlington 3-1.

For the championship game, since the teams will have already played once in the playoffs, the home team in the first game is the visiting team in the second.

Arrangements for Chris Schuck Set

Christopher J. Schuck, age 47 of Hartland passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 16, 2015. He was born on January 23, 1968 in Hartford, WI to William and Frances (nee Durkee) Schuck. Chris covered thousands of sporting events, as he served as the primary sports beat reporter in the Sussex Sun. He was also a regular contributor to the Oconomowoc Focus, Lake Country Reporter, Mukwonago Chief and Kettle Moraine Index. While baseball has always been his favorite sport, Chris loved covering soccer. He was the guy at the big soccer match and could usually be found at Uihlein Soccer Park when the state tournament rolled around. The coaches he covered respected his knowledge of the game. Chris wanted to be the best basketball official around. His No. 1 mission was to someday work in the WIAA postseason and that dream became reality about five years ago. Chris loved sports, playing baseball and writing. He also loved biking and walking whether it was rain or shine.

Chris is survived by his loving mother, Frances Schuck; sister, Angie (Don) Theama of Hartland and his brother, Bill P. Schuck of Hartford; nieces and nephews, William R. Theama, Donald J. Theama Jr., and Angeline R. Theama. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Chris is preceded in death by his father, William; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Shimon Funeral Home of Hartford served the family.

LOL Alumni Honored in West Bend

The West Bend Baseball Association inducted its Diamond of Honor Wall of Fame Class of 2012 on February 9. Included in the class are notable LOL alumni, starting with former Northern Division commissioner Jake Oehlafen, who served for 40 years. Oelhafen, along with fellow inductees Bill Albrecht, Don Gumm and Mitch Knox are all members of the LOL Hall of Fame. Joining them was Greg Wilcox.

Doc Collopy Passes Away

Longtime Hartland Fan Dibb Passes Away

Stephen Dibb of Hartland passed away on Tuesday April 23 at age 63. Steve was a dedicated fan and score keeper for the Hartland Oilers of the Western Division. He has two sons that currently play for Hartland. His father, Jim, is a member of the LOL Hall of Fame. The following obituary is courtesy of the Lake Country Reporter.

Steve was married to his best friend and wife Joyce (Krueger) Dibb for 30 + years and cherished raising and coaching his three sons. Steve was very proud to have served in the Air Force and 38 years at Cooper Industries. Throughout his life his passion was baseball as a player and a coach. He was an avid golfer, bowler and classic rock music enthusiast.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Joyce, his three sons, Jason R (Rae), Chad S (Patti) and Troy M (Kirstin) Dibb and his grandchildren Hannah and Julian. He is also survived by his parents James and Winifred Dibb; siblings Donna and Rick Wentarmini, Jim and Jean Dibb, John and Patti Dibb, Randy and Luann Dibb, Jerry and Dawn Dibb, Lisa and Rick Suminski. In-laws Sandy Zwieg, Dick and Sue Krueger, Jean and Roger Knop, Charlie and Gail Krueger, Jackie and Bob Raddeman, Jeff Krueger, Kris and Mike Nagel along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by In-laws Lester and Mary Krueger, Ron Zwieg, Korky and Donnie Kienast and Jerry Krueger.

Arnold 'Ozzie' Pick Passes Away

Arnold “Ozzie” Christian Pick, age 87, of Plymouth, WI, died July 14, 2013 at his home, as were his wishes, with his loving wife and grandson by his side. He was born on June 23, 1926 in Willow City, North Dakota, a son to the late Christian and Esther Dreyer Pick. The family moved to Plymouth in 1927.

Arnold attended St. John Lutheran School and Plymouth High School. He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army from 1944-1947. He worked for Hoffman Hardware in Plymouth for 26 years and retired after 18 years with A&P Cheese Company in Plymouth, a division of the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. Arnold also owned and operated AP Glass Repair in the Plymouth area for many years. He was also a member of the Plymouth Auxiliary Police.

On March 9, 1968, he was united in marriage to June Marie Leifer at St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church his entire life and served as an usher for 30 years. Arnold was a member of the Kettle Moraine Ski Club, Plymouth Ski Club and was a driving force behind establishing the Nutt Ski Hill in Plymouth. Arnold was a member of the Plymouth Lions Club, Cascade American Legion Post #386 and the Plymouth VFW Post #5612. Arnold enjoyed skiing, fishing and his favorite past time, baseball. He played baseball for many teams in his life. He played on season with the 10th Infantry Army Team in Fort Campbell, Kentucky as well as many different Plymouth teams and with New Holstein of the Northern State League. He later coached and managed the Plymouth Flames for many years along with maintaining Carl Loebe Field in Plymouth. Arnold was a member of the Old Time Ball Players of Wisconsin and of the Land O' Lakes Hall of Fame.

Arnold along with Werner Finke had a dream of establishing a ball diamond for Pee Wee Baseball in Plymouth. With a pledge of support from the Plymouth Lions Club and the newly founded Plymouth Pee Wee Club work began on a piece of land on Valley Road in Plymouth. After much work, fundraising and support from the community and businesses in the Plymouth area, the Pee Wee Players finally had a field of their own. The next year it was dedicated as Lions Park and the Arnold “Ozzie” Pick Field. Arnold maintained this field until the age of 86. One of his biggest thrills at the field named after him was to see his grandson Steven hit a “Grand Slam” homerun in Pee Wee League play.

Arnold is survived by his wife of 45 years, June. One sister: Delores (Clyde) Dhein, Sheboygan. Three step-sons: Larry (Judi) Falk, Plymouth, Jeffrey (Carol) Falk, Sheboygan and Steven (Lena) Falk, Plymouth. One grandson: Steven Jr. (Stacy) Falk, Plymouth. One granddaughter: Courtney, Sheboygan. Two great grandsons: Adrien and Tristan Falk, Plymouth. Sister-in-laws: Marge (Patrick) Doherty, Kewaskum, Betty Klein, Athelstane, WI, Lucille (Ray) Miske, Adell, Donna (Jay) Pfrang, Plymouth, Linda (Bruce) Grassman, Shawano. One brother-in-law: Donald Leifer, Plymouth. Also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Arnold was preceded in death by his mother, father and step-father, John Kunstman. Sisters: Luella (Elroy) Dennerlein, Plymouth, Florence (James) Waterman, Plymouth, Lorraine (Marvin) Methfessel, Sheboygan, Janice (Robert) Wacha, Sheboygan. Pat Klink Passes Away

Herbert P. Klink "Pat" passed away peacefully at home on July 22, 2013 with the love of his entire family by his side.

Pat was born March 17, 1936 in North Lake WI, to Francis & Lucille Klink. Herbert (Pat) lived most of his adult life in Hartland, WI where he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Janice Janke a year after they were king and queen of the senior prom at Hartland High school. Throughout his life Pat was committed to his family, community and a love of the great outdoors. Pat volunteered for many organizations in his community serving for over 25 years with the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department. He also served on the Hartland Athletic Advancement Association board and as their president for many years. He was a board member with the Land O’ Lakes Old Timers’ Baseball Association as well. Pat served all of the communities he was a part of including being on the board and a past president for the Island Lake Home Owners Association at his summer cabin in the north woods, and was an extremely active member at his winter retirement home in Clearwater, FL. Pat was an exceptional athlete who was captain of the football team and a star athlete in high school and then won a grand championship in baseball with North Lake in 1956 and was elected to the Land O’ Lakes Baseball Hall of fame in 1999 joining his 3 brothers. Pat had an infectious smile with a continuous twinkle in his incredible blue Irish eyes. A positive man that wanted to make people happy was displayed every Christmas when he was Santa Claus and visited generations of children for 50 years bringing smiles to their face and gifts to all. The family fishing and hunting trips were a time to bond with family and enjoy the outdoors that Pat so loved. He will be missed but his memories and teachings will live on forever.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Janice (nee Janke) Klink, son Daniel (Lisa) Klink, son Kevin (Betty) Klink, son Patrick (Marguerite) Klink; grandchildren Christopher (Brianna) Klink, Collin Klink, Mitchell Klink, Hannah Klink, Matthew Klink, Madeline Klink, Karrah Klink as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Lucy and Francis, his sister Mary and brothers Harold, Raymond, Francis Jr. and James.

A special thanks to Dr. Fish and Dr. Saeian and the staff at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

Longtime Falls Fan Toth Passes Away

George Toth of Menomonee Falls passed away on November 5, 2013. He was a veteran and supporter of LOL for over 60 years with primarily the Menomonee Falls Lakers. George was the scoreboard operator for many years.

George was born on March 14, 1930. He is survived by his wife Anna Mae (nee Gross), sons Gary and Doug and daughter Vicki Braden. George was a US Army veteran who served from 1947 to 1949. It was George's wish to not have a memorial service.

The Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home served the family.

LOL GCP Format To Remain The Same

At a meeting on December 16, the LOL Board of Directors rejected by a 6-2 vote a proposal to advance the start of the grand championship playoffs (GCP) by one week. The proposal was made in an effort to promote fairness between teams that rely largely on college-age talent and those that do not. While directors agreed on the desire to have teams in the GCP playing at close to full strength, they disagreed on the effects of the change on the regular season. Divisions where the majority of teams play on unlighted fields would have had to scheduled one or two additional two-game weekends.

Another proposal to add a second team from each division to the GCP was pulled from consideration.

Jane Regnitz Visitation Details

Jane C Regnitz of Cedarburg passed away on January 14, 2014 at age 83. She is the mother of former Cedarburg Mercs player and manager Paul 'Hammer' Regnitz. mother-in-law of current LOL secretary-treasurer Terry Regnitz and grandmother of current Mercs player John Regnitz.

Visitation for Jane will be on Sunday January 19 at Advent Lutheran Church, W63 N642 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg, beginning at 1pm until the start of the funeral service at 3pm. There will be a reception following the funeral service. Memorials to Advent Lutheran Church or Horizon Home Care and Hospice are appreciated.

Jane was born June 9, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI. The daughter of Raymond Witt and Caroline Runge. She attended Cedarburg High School where she was a cheerleader and played in the band.

Married John Regnitz (dec) at Advent Lutheran Church in Cedarburg on June 11, 1949. Jane worked for Levy & Levy as a paralegal for 36 years, retired, and then became the secretary at Advent Lutheran Church for another 16 years. Throughout Jane’s life she enjoyed spending time at the Oxbo Resort near Park Falls, WI, waitressed at the American Legion fish frys, reading novels, needlework, creating paintings with her art group, card club, her Friday movie club, participated in several women’s church committees, member of her H.S. class reunion committee, a member of the Golden Bulldogs, supporter of the Advent Prayer Garden, and avid member of Advent Lutheran Church.

Survivors include son Paul “Hammer” (Terry) Regnitz; grandchildren Caroline (Scott) Brandt and John (Angie) Regnitz; great grandchildren Jackson Brandt, Reese and Kamryn Regnitz; sisters Judy (Reuben dec.) Weidmann (nee Witt) and Rayola (Johnald) Strey (nee Witt); nieces and nephews Jeffrey (Cathey) Weidmann, Larry Weidmann, Connie (Cody) Strook (nee Strey) and Johnald (Emily) Strey, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her husband John Regnitz.

The family wishes to thank all the members of Jane’s medical team over the last few months for all their compassion and hard work. With the help of Horizon Home Care and Hospice, Jane was able to fulfill her wish of dying in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by her family.

LOL Hall of Fame Member Dibb Passes Away

James 'Jim" Dibb of Hartland passed away on Wednesday July 23 at age 87. Jim was elected to the LOL Hall of Fame in 2002 as the winner of the League Meritorious Award.

Loving husband for 67 years to Winifred (nee Weber). Loving Father of the late Stephen (Joyce) Dibb, Donna (Richard) Wentarmini, James (Jean) Dibb , John (Patti) Dibb, Randall (Luann) Dibb, Jerome (Dawn) Dibb and Lisa (Richard) Suminski. Special Papa to Hannah, Julian, Athena, Zoe, Haley, Colin, Abigail, Jaelynn, Jamos, Giovanni, Emiliano, Teigen, Tahlia, Keegan and Conrad. Preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Ann Dibb, brother, Roy (Irish) Dibb and sister, Mildred (Hoyt) Shadrick. He is further survived by many relatives and friends.  

Jim was devoted to his family and proudly supported all their activities. He was a sports enthusiast, playing softball and baseball until age 65. He was an avid bowler and golfer, a member of the Land O’Lakes Hall of Fame and enthusiastically coached many years of youth baseball.
 
The family extends a special thank you to the caring staff at Linden Ridge Mukwonago and Serenity Hospice Care. 
 
Memorials can be made in Jim’s name to the Land O’ Lakes Old-Timers Association which supports Land O’ Lakes and youth baseball.

WEST BEND - Pounding out 14 hits, West Bend 7-Up cruised past the Kenosha Merchants 14-0 Sunday to win the 2010 Land O’ Lakes baseball grand championship. The championship is the third for West Bend while Kenosha was making their first appearance in the grand championship in their second year of existence.

Seven-Up scored all the runs they would need in the first inning as leadoff hitter Taylor Koth reached on an error. Andy Hetebrueg singled ahead of the first of two Mike Mueller home runs on the day. The other runs in the inning scored on an Adam Rohlinger double and Jed Justman infield grounder that was muffed. West Bend added another run in the second inning when Erik Kraemer’s grounder was bobbled.

West Bend blew the game open in the sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate in scoring six times, starting with Kraemer’s sacrifice fly. Rohlinger and Billy Bynum followed with run-scoring singles before Dan Mueller’s fly ball was dropped, allowing two runs to score. Mueller later scored on Koth’s single.

Bynum and Mike Mueller each connected on solo home runs in the seventh inning to conclude West Bend’s scoring.

Kenosha’s only scoring chance came in the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with one out. West Bend worked out of the jam thanks to a double play.

Mike Mueller collected three hits for West Bend while Rohlinger, Bynum, Justman and Hetebrueg each had two. For Kenosha, Josh Albers had two hits.

On the mound, Hetebrueg struck out 10 batters.

Past LOL Old Timers Assn. President Klink Passes Away

Retired LOL Old Timers Association president Raymond John (Ray) Klink passed away on Monday January 17. A Mass of Resurrection for Ray was said on Tuesday January 25 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Brookfield.

Ray was born on July 23, 1930 in North Lake, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille (Hanrahan) and Francis Klink Sr., his sister Mary Book and brothers Francis Jr., Harold, and James. Survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Margaret A Klink (Weber) and daughter Robin (Brian) Higgins, and most treasured granddaughters, Emily Margaret and Molly Rae. Ray is further survived by his brother Pat (Jan) Klink, sisters-in law: Judy Klink, Sue Klink, Joyce Armstrong, special niece Marge (Doug) Teisl, many dear nieces, nephews and friends, and his devoted canine companion, Star.

Ray volunteered for service in the United States Army and played baseball while in the Army and later for Land 'O Lakes. Ray was inducted into the Land 'O Lakes Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Hall of Fame in 1978 and he served as President of the Land O' Lakes Old Times Association.

Ray joined the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department as a deputy in 1958. He later became head of the Juvenile and Drug Enforcement Division and earned degrees from WCTI and Milton College in Criminal Justice. Ray later served on the Board of Trustees for Milton College. He was elected to the office of Waukesha County Sheriff in 1978 - an office he held until his retirement in 1992. Ray also served as Emergency Government Coordinator of the State of Wisconsin during this time. He was most proud of the D.A.R.E. program and the Sheriff's Department K-9 unit; both were initiated under his watch.

Ray enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, pheasant hunter and golfer. He spent many hours on the water (or ice) or the links. He was active in St. Dominic parish in Brookfield and coached baseball and basketball for many years in the 1960's. He was part of a small group of men to begin the athletic association at St. Dominic's.

Ray's family thanks the staff at Wisconsin Heart Hospital and Dr. Ahuja for getting Ray home for one more Christmas. Special thanks to Dr. Donald Roach, Dr. David Engle and the staff at Elmbrook Memorial Hospital for the care given to Ray throughout his many recent hospitalizations. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Girl Scouts Wisconsin Southeast - Chinook Program Center. The Harder Funeral Home in Brookfield is serving the family.

Hall of Famer Chris Schroeder Passes Away

Christopher R. Schroeder, 61, Oostburg died unexpectedly on Sunday night, April 17, 2011 after an apparent heart attack.

Chris was born on November 30, 1949 in Milwaukee, the son of the late Robert and Bernice (Hintz) Schroeder. He graduated from Homestead High School in Mequon in 1967 and continued his education at UW-Whitewater and UW-Milwaukee where he received his bachelor degree and played collegiate baseball and basketball. He earned his master degree from UW-LaCrosse. Chris was a history and physical education teacher for 37 years, having taught at Thiensville and Hartford for a brief time and then at Random Lake from 1979 until his retirement in 2010. On March 25, 1989 he married Lorie Damrow in Saukville.

Chris was a long-time first baseman for the Thiensville-Mequon Twins in the Northern Division and was elected to the LOL Hall of Fame in 2001.

Besides the LOL Hall of Fame, Chris was a member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and the Oostburg Golf League. Chris was an outstanding athlete having a special love for baseball, basketball, golf, football, weight training, and bicycling. He coached hundreds of area youth and students throughout his career. He was a faithful fan to his two sons as they participated in many of their sports. Chris was a history buff and enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Lorie of Oostburg; two sons, Bob Schroeder and Steve (Becky) Schroeder; both of West Bend; his brother Kurt Schroeder of Port Washington; and his mother-in-law, Cleo Damrow of Sheboygan.

Funeral services for Chris were held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Greg Whelton officiating. Burial followed at Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan.

Sunday May 1 marked the beginning of the 90th year of Land O' Lakes baseball since Marty Weber Sr. organized the LOL in 1922. Play in the Southwestern and Western Divisions started on May 1. Northern Division action starts May 15 with the Eastern Division starting one week later.

Passing of John Nelson

It is with sadness that the LOL announces the passing of John Nelson of Waukesha on July 9 at age 74.

John was born on December 6, 1936 the son of the late Arthur and Geraldine Nelson. John was a Veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the Land O' Lakes Baseball League where he served as past commissioner. John also pitched for Genessee, Sullivan and Palmyra. He was the 2005 recipient of the LOL League Meritorious Award. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cheering on his favorite teams the Philadelphia Phillys and the Detroit Lions.

John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Betty of Waukesha. Cherished father of Barry and Berta Nelson of Waukesha. Beloved grandfather of Brad Nelson and Sara DeBord. Brother of Eric (Christine) Nelson of Arkdale. John was loved and will be remembered by other relatives and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Orchard and daughter Dawn Nelson.

BROOKFIELD – Scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Brookfield Bulldogs came from behind to defeat the Cedarburg Mercs 8-7 on Sunday to win the 2011 Land O’ Lakes grand championship.

The Bulldogs, champions of the Western Division, led for the majority of the game until the Northern Division champion Mercs scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Brookfield answered with two runs in their half. Jason Rutz reached on a fielders choice and scored the tying run on Kris Franzen’s triple. Scott Booth singled Franzen home with the game-winner.

Cedarburg’s eighth inning rally started with Brian Bert’s leadoff single, followed by a double by Nolan Gilbertson. Both runners scored on John Regnitz’s single. After a single by Ross Zahour, Joe Reichhart’s infield grounder was muffed, allowing Regnitz to score.

Brookfield’s starting pitcher, Josh Eidt, was again a tough puzzle to solve for the Mercs. He did not allow a base runner until Gilbertson’s one-out single in the fourth. Eidt struck out seven and walked three in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs scored first in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jeff Lueck led off with a walk, with Mike Jacobs reaching on catcher’s interference. KC Pinsoneault sacrifed both runners up a base and reached safely on a throwing error. Josh Lemke’s sacrifice fly scored Lueck, with Jacobs scoring on Andy Monigal’s single.

Brookfield’s lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning when Booth singled and scored on Jacobs’ single. The score remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth when Cedarburg scored three times to tie the score, with all the damage coming after two outs. Reichhart led off with a double followed by a walk to Joe Daniels. Steve Hopfensperger sacrificed the runners up a base. Another walk to Nolan Gilbertson loaded the bases before John Vandenberg’s RBI single.

Josh Lemke reestablished the lead for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single. Jacobs added an RBI single in the seventn to give Brookfield a 5-3 lead.

Brookfield outhit Cedarburg 10-8 in the game. Collecting two hits each were Franzen, Monigal, Booth and Jacobs. Gilbertson and Regnitz had two hits each for Cedarburg.

2011 OTBA HOF Welcomes Enlund

At its recent induction ceremony, the Old Time Ball Players Association of Wisconsin welcomed Jim Enlund to its Hall of Fame.

As a pitcher, Jim was the Langsdorf League's pitcher of the year in 1974 and 1975 while playing for the Highway Beer Depot team. His Land O' Lakes career began with New Berlin in 1977. New Berlin won the grand championship that season, with Enlund winning Most Valuable Player, Leading Pitcher and the Eastern Division MVP honors. As he transitioned to the Lakers' designated hitter in 1978, Jim led New Berlin to another divisional championship and became the Lakers' player-manager in 1980, winning Co-Manager of the Year honors that year. In 1981, Jim was an all-star, the Lakers' MVP and was selected to the All-League team that year as a DH.

Jim joined fellow inductees Bob Neja, Randy Rennicke, Dean Rennicke and Dick Huxtable at the recent awards banquet. The Old Time Ball Players Association of Wisconsin Hall of Fame placques are on display at Miller Park.

LOL Fan Honored by MLB Groundskeepers

As printed in the January 5, 2012 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the new Major League Baseball Groundskeeper Hall of Fame announced that the trophy for inductees is being named for Gary Vanden Berg, the longtime Milwaukee Brewers groundskeeper who passed away last October. Gary was a fan of LOL who has two sons currently playing LOL baseball.

The association of MLB Groundskeepers selected two legends of their profession as the inaugural inductees: Emil Bossard and George Toma. They will be inducted on January 8 during the 14th annual meeting of MLB Groundskeepers in Anaheim, Calif.

The Vanden Berg Trophy honors Bossard and Toma for their "dedication and outstanding contributions to Major League Baseball and the sports turf industry."

Vanden Berg worked for the Brewers for more than 30 years, beginning in 1981 as assistant superintendent of grounds. He served for more than 20 years as the club's director of grounds before losing his battle with cancer.

Upon his death, the MLB Groundskeepers association unanimously voted to name the Hall of Fame trophy in his honor.

Mike Petesch passed away earlier this week. Many LOL team managers and players knew Mike as their contact from Milwaukee Sporting Goods for baseballs and other team equipment. Mike was the owner of Mid-City Sporting Goods prior to his work for Milwaukee Sporting Goods.

Visitation for MIke will be on Friday May 1 from 4pm to 7pm at the Schramka Funeral Home at 7841 W Appleton Av in Milwaukee. The funeral service will follow at 7pm.

Eastern Division Contact Rule

The following contact rule at home plate is effective immediately in the Eastern Division. Please contact commissioner Ron Hart with any questions.

For plays at home plate, any offensive player attempting to score and colliding with the catcher, if in the umpire's judgement such collision was unnecessary, violent and avoidable, said collision shall be considered "flagrant and malicious", resulting in the immediate ejection from the game of the offensive player. If in the umpires judgement, the defensive player (catcher) was obstructing the base path, the offensive player will be awarded home. Nevertheless, the offensive player is ejected from the game for unnecessary, violent and avoidable "flagrant and malicious contact"

Rationale for rule change

MLB (Official Baseball Rules) are designed and written for professional baseball players. Professional athletes participate in baseball as a career choice. The amateur athlete (i.e. collegian player, scholastic player or Land O' Lakes player) is not, by definition, a professional baseball player whose participation is career oriented. With this in mind, the rule change is made for the following reason(s).

1. This rule change best exemplifies the spirit of NCAA and NFHS baseball rules regarding violent collisions with the catcher at home plate.

2. Safety of the players. An amateur athlete needs to go to work the next day and often needs to support a family. It makes no sense for the defensive or offensive player to be put at risk of potential serious injury by avoidable contact at home plate.

3. Far too often, the end result of avoidable contact at home plate is at best a verbal confrontation between opponents and at worst a physical confrontation between opponents. Neither is in the spirit of good sportsmanship and fair play and often leads to further hostilities between the two opponents.

2008 Championship Weekend Summary

On the weekend of August 16-17, all four divisions in Land O' Lakes determined their representatives for the LOL grand championship playoffs that start next weekend. Below is a brief summary of the championship games in each division.

EASTERN DIVIISON
Butler defeated regular season champion West Allis 11-5 to earn the East GCP berth. In the semifinals played on Saturday, Butler defeated New Berlin 7-3 while regular season champion West Allis edged Muskego 5-4.

NORTHERN DIVISION
Regular season champion Cedarburg defeated Plymouth 5-2 in the tournament championship game and will represent the North in the GCP.

SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION
Waterford, the regular season champions, needed 13 innings to subdue North Prairie 8-7 in the championship game and clinch the Southwest GCP berth.

WESTERN DIVISION
Brookfield Bulldogs needed an extra day, but will represent the West in the GCP after outlasting West Bend Seven Up 8-6 on Sunday, a day after Seven Up stayed alive with a 12-1 win.

2008 LOL Grand Championship Playoffs Game Scores

The 87th season of LOL baseball has concluded with the crowning of Northern Division champion Cedarburg as the 2008 LOL LOL grand champions.

Cedarburg defeated Waterford on September 7 by a score of 7-1 to erase several years of heartache in reaching the finals only to fall short. Waterford staved off elimination by defeating Cedarburg on September 6 11-10 behind a pair of home runs by Bart Nowicki, who also drove in seven of the 11 runs.

The Cedarburg Mercs used clutch hitting to win the 2008 Land O’ Lakes grand championship, their first since 1997. Cedarburg had finished as the runnerups each of the past two seasons.

Clutch hitting with runners in scoring position was a primary reason behind the Mercs’ win Sunday as they collected four hits in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. The Rivermen collected just one hit in 14 at-bats.

The Mercs broke through for the first run of the game in the third inning. Three more runs in the sixth inning gave the Mercs a 4-0 advantage. A walk to Brian Bert started things. After a single by Nolan Gilbertson, John Regnitz blooped a double inside the right field line to score two runners.

Waterford’s Tony Chapman led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and scored on Brad Nowicki’s double, Waterford’s only hit with runners in scoring position.

Tom Gaertig led off the Cedarburg seventh inning with a walk. After singles by Wade and Bert loaded the bases, Ross Zahour’s infield grounder scored Gaertig, with a throwing error allowing Wade to score. Reichhart’s solo home run in the eighth capped the Cedarburg scoring.

Reichhart had three of the 13 Cedarburg hits in the game, with Regnitz and Bert adding two each. Brad Nowicki collected three of Waterford’s nine hits while Bart Nowicki had two.

Waterford player-manager Bart Nowicki single-handedly led his team to victory in an elimination game Saturday. He collected four hits, including a pair of home runs, and drove in seven of the 11 Rivermen runs.

The winning run scored in the ninth on Chris Harmeling’s double. That came after a three-run rally and a dropped infield fly ball allowed the Rivemen to tie the game in the eighth inning.

Cedarburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings with Nolan Gilbertson accounting for four of the runs on a two-run double in the first and a two-run home run in the second.

Bart Nowicki’s three-run home run got the Rivermen on the board in the third inning. He added a solo blast in the fifth after teammate Adam Brechtl cracked a two-run home run of his own. Nowicki’s second home run tied the score at six.

Cedarburg untied the game in their half of the fifth on a suicide squeeze bunt by Wade and a two-run single by Bert.

Walter O'Malley Passes Away

Longtime Land O' Lakes supporter Walter O'Malley of Brookfield passed away on October 13, 2008 at age 88.

Walter (Wally) Richard O'Malley, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was born on July 28, 1920. Preceded in death by parents Walter and Anna, brothers Robert and James, and son-in-law Barry Fielkow. Survived by loving wife of 65 years, Harriet. Loving father to Richard (Lee) O'Malley, Cynthia (Dave) Johnson, Patricia Fielkow, and Mary Jeanne (Garry) Smith. Beloved granddad to Brian (Lisa) Johnson, Amy (James) Allan, Jennifer (Chris) Robson, Shawn (Megan) O'Malley, Megan (Jim), Matthew and Rachel (Dave) Fielkow. Stephanie and Christopher (Kristin) Johnson, Bridget (Rich) Toltzman, Andy OMalley, Kyle and Tiffany Smith. Loving great granddaddy to Nicholas, Timothy and Natalie Johnson, Jacob, Cameron and Aidan Allan, Ben and Abby Robson, Jamison Fielkow Klein, and Bryce Toltzman. Brother-in- law to Chris Barnes, Pat Kiley, Lee Barnes, and Beverly O'Malley. Also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Wally was born and raised in Chicago, graduated from St. Mel's High School, attended St. Mary's in Winona before transferring and graduating from Marquette University with a degree in engineering. He worked as a co-op student while there for Harnischfeger and after completing his service in the Navy during WWII, came back to Harnischfeger where he retired as vice-president of the crane division after 41 years. He was president of the Material Handling Institute where he founded the student scholarship program. He was an avid baseball pitcher, golfer and skier. Wally was a director of the Brookfield Land o' Lakes, a longtime board member of the Brookfield Park and Rec., and a charter member of St. Dominics Parish in Brookfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be given to the Brookfield Bull Dogs baseball team, the MS Society or the charity of your choice.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Walter was held on Saturday October 16at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, Brookfield, at followed by graveside services at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waukesha.

Becker-Ritter Funeral Home in Brookfield was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Fisher played for the Brookfield Lakers in the later half of the 1960s, winning the home run crown and MVP honors in 1965.

Don Rennicke spent 15 years as a player, primarily with the Thiensville-Mequon Twins between 1945 and 1960. He is best known as the long-time varsity baseball coach at Homestead High School. Rennicke Field, the home park of the Twins and Homestead, is named in Don's honor.

Paul Hoenecke was the recipient of the Dick Falk Memorial Award, annually given to an outstanding high school baseball player.

CEDARBURG - Hammering out 19 hits, the Southwestern Division all-stars defeated their Northern Division counterparts 15-6 on Sunday at Cedarburg’s Behling Field.

After five innings, the Southwest was clinging to a 4-3 lead. They broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring 11 times.

In the Southwest first inning, Waterford’s Jason Morgan led off with a double. His teammate, Chris Harmeling, followed with a single. Marcellus Dawson of Rome reached on a fielders choice to score Morgan. After Bart Nowicki (Waterford) reached on an error, Dan Stefanski (North Prairie) singled to score Dawson. Delavan’s Aaron Adsit singled to score Nowicki.

The North answered in their half of the first on a solo home run by Thiensville-Mequon’s Ken Poniewaz. Morgan started another Southwest rally in the second with a triple, scoring on Harmeling’s sacrifice fly.

In the North fourth, the hosts scored twice to close within 4-3, loading the bases on walks to Derek Kozlowski (Port Washington) and Scott Sievert (West Bend Spirits). Sandwiched in between was Poniewaz being hit by a pitch. Another walk to Adam Rohlinger (Spirits) forced home Kozlowski. Howards Grove’s P.J. Weber grounded into a fielders choice that scored Poniewaz.

Any hopes the North had of a comback were crushed in the Southwest sixth. In that inning, the visitors sent 16 batters to the plate in scoring 11 times. Waterford’s Brad Nowicki walked to lead of the inning. Teammate Adam Brechtl singled. East Troy’s Dustin Keegan doubled home Nowicki. North Prairie’s Jon Stillman and Genessee’s Dusty Schmidt added run-scoring singles.

After Jeff Silbernagel (East Troy) reached on an error, Katte singled in a run. Damon Schmidt (Waterford) followed with another single. Consecutive walks to Brad Nowicki and Brechtl each scored runs to make the score 12-3. Stillman added another run-scoring single. Dusty Schmidt’s two-run single and Ryan Toshum (Mukwonago)’s single concluded the scoring.

In the bottom of the sixth, the North scored three runs. After Paul Gloede (Plymouth) led off with a walk, the next two batters were retired. Ryan Finnerty (Thiensville-Mequon) drove in Gloede with a single, the first hit for the North since Poniewaz’s home run in the first. Finnerty’s teammate, Andy Moroder, followed with a double. Port Washington’s Nick Heiting hit a single that scored both Finnerty and Moroder. A single by Chris Bennin (Plymouth) and walk to Nick Chesak (Spirits) loaded the bases, but no further damage was done.

Dan Stefanskihad three hits for the Southwestern Division. Morgan, Harmeling, Katte, Stillman, Dusty Schmidt and Damon Schmidt had two hits each. Collecting one hit were Adsit, Brechtl, Keegan and Toshum.

Besides the Poniewaz home run, the only other Northern hits were singles by Finnerty, Heiting, Bennin and Cedarburg’s Ross Zahour, and a double by Andy Moroder. -30-

Jake Mueller Passes Away

The Land O' Lakes Baseball League announces the passing of Hall of Fame member Jacob N. "Jake" Mueller of Saukville. Jake passed away on July 14 at age 89. Visitation for Jake will be on Tuesday July 17 from 4pm to 6:45pm at the Poole Funeral Home in Port Washington (www.poolefh.com). The funeral home is at 203 N Wisconsin St, one block north of Grand Avenue (Highway 32) in downtown Port Washington.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 730pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Saukville, with interment in the parish cemetery. IC is located at 144 W Church St in Saukville. Church Street is one block south of Dekora Street (HIghway 33) off of Main Street.

Jake was the dear husband of the late Ethel (nee Codere), and the father of Diane (the late Pat) McCarthy, JoAnn (Gerald "PeeWee"), Gary (Litha) and Terry (Judy) Mueller. Further survived by 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sister, Vicki Gerl, other relatives and many friends.

Memorials to Loyal Order of the Moose #1043, Saukville, Saukville Softball Assoc. or the Saukville Saints Baseball Club are appreciated. Jake was a proud member of the Moose Lodge and attained the degree of Pilgrim.

Longtime Hartland Player Ted Mallow Passes Away

Longtime Hartland player Ted Mallow passed away on June 4 at age 83 due to heart disease. He played for Hartland in the Western Division and served as the master of ceremonies for the Old Timers Association Hall of Fame induction banquet.

Funeral services for Ted will take place at 3pm on Sunday June 24 at First Congregational Church at 111 Church St in Hartland. Burial will be in the Hartland Village Cemetery. SAUKVILLE - Powered by a three-run first inning and timely pitching, the Eastern Division all-stars shut out the Northern Division all-stars 4-0 on Sunday July 8 at Dickmann Field in Grady Park.

The East touched the North starting pitcher Joe Daniels (Cedarburg) for three runs in the first inning. John Stetzenback (West Allis) led off the game with a single and scored on Derek D’Amico’s (Waukesha) double. D’Amico scored ahead of Brian Stoesklien’s (West Allis) home run.

Winning pitcher Steve Kargus (Butler) threw three perfect innings, thanks in part to Andy Schwall’s (West Allis) catch that denied the North’s Ross Zahour (Cedarburg) a home run in the first inning.

Grafton’s Joe Riebe broke up the East perfect game with a bunt single with one out in the fourth inning. Riebe’s single was the lone North hit until the sixth when Saukville’s Joel Zalewski lined a pitch into center field for a hit. He added another single in the eighth inning. The North’s other hit belong to Port Washington’s Brad Kitt.

In the seventh inning, the East scored their final run. After leadoff hitter Mike Gappa (New Berlin) was hit by a pitch, Nick Blanchet (Muskego) beat out an infield single. Gappa scored on Kargus’ single.

Stetzenback and Stoesklien each had two hits for the East. Other East players collecting a hit were Eric Dunn (Butler) and Randy Sobczyk (Butler).

Zalewski was selected as the North's most-valuable player by a vote of division managers present at the game.

Five-O's On Top of LOL World

The Oconomowoc Five-O's are the LOL grand champions for 2007 after defeating Cedarburg in a tight contest on Saturday September 15 by a score of 3-2.

Jeff Rhoads had a hand in every Five-O rally, scoring all three runs. He hit a solo home run in the first inning. He singled in the fourth inning and scored on Josh Bouche's infield grounder. Rhoads tripled in the sixth and scored on Derek Nelson's single.

The championship is the 10th for Oconomowoc. They last won it all in 1999. For Cedarburg, it marked the second straight year of being the runner-up.

The Ozaukee County News Graphic's annual NG103 section was released on May 20. The section introduces readers to 103 county residents who embody the spirit of Ozaukee County.

Two honorees have links to Land O' Lakes baseball. Saukville resident Jim Peterson is the league's historian while Port Washington resident Lester Mayer serves as the LOL's commissioner for the Northern Division.

LOL HOF Class of 2013

Congratulations to the LOL Hall of Fame Class of 2013: Travis Thull, West Bend Company/7-Up; Rick Seidel, Mukwonago; Russ Belling, Waukesha/North Prairie; Bill Goral, Brookfield Lakers; Todd Morris, Hartland/North Lake; and Joe Donovan, recipient of the League Meritorious Award. This year's recipient of the Ray Klink President'a Award is Chuck Delsman, sports editor at the Lake Country Reporter (Hartland).

The LOL Old Timers Association web site lists the Hall of Fame roster along with other news of the association.

The Ray Klink President's Award recipient is Bill Majeskie of Brookfield.
The League Meritorious Award will go to Ray Sykes of Butler.

LOL Hall of Fame Class of 2011

Congratulations to the Land O' Lakes Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2011 inductees. They include Dave Berka of Brookfield, Bill Beno of Pewaukee, Tim Baron of Genessee, Steve Pease of Dousman, John Engel of Hartland and Rollie Kitt of Port Washington. Receiving the Ray Klink President's Award will be Jim and Linda Bloedow of Pewaukee.

2007 LOL All Star Game Results

The annual Land O' Lakes all-star games were played on Sunday July 8.

At Rome, the Southwestern Division defeated the Western Division 4-2.
