A full day of baseball andfun activities was had by all on May 17,2008. All the PAL baseball teams played at home. The coach's got dunked in the dunk tank. Kids jumped in the moonbounce and played carnival games. The day was highlighted by visits from both Louie from Bowie and The Oriole Bird.
PAL Astro's Baseball- You  Gotta Be Here!

PAL Astro's 10U Win LFYAA "A" Division Tourney

The PAL Astro's combined 10U squad won the prestigious 2008 LFYAA 10U A Division Tournament Championship on Thursday July 3rd. The Astro's beat Harundale 9-1 avenging an earlier extra inning loss to the boys from Glen Burnie. Way to Go Astro's!!!!

The LFYAA championship follows up an earlier Bronze division championship for the PAL Astro's 10U guys in the High caliber Severn Tournament held in June. PAL decided to enter two teams in the Severn tournament. Each PAL team played well  in the Severn tourney. The Ray Sears' led Astro's  pulled together to bring home the Bronze championship. Coach Tom Rozylowicz''s PAL team won early inthe tournament but ran into some stiff competition from two well- known baseball organizations- Glade Valley and Manassas (Va) Baseball.

Here are the 2008 Severn School's Out Tournament Bronze bracket Champions.

PAL's commitment in 2008 was to bring tournament baseball to as many PAL players as possible. Once the summer tournament season ends- PAL teams will have competed in almost a dozen tournaments. Many thanks must go out to all of the coach's who organized and took the lead in forming these teams. We had every age group including our 5-6 year olds compete in a tournament this year.

Here is a partial list of the tournaments PAL teams entered in 2008

2008 PAL Fall Baseball

PAL had an extremely successful first year of fall baseball. We fielded 5 teams spanning 4 different age groups giving about 60 kids the opportunity to improve and keep fresh the baseball  skills they learned in the spring.

2008 Fall Ball Highlights

Fall Baseball, Game 6 - PAL Astros vs SCA1

14U- Sunday was a great day for Fall Baseball.  Unfortunately, the PAL U14 Team was forced to play short only fielding 8 players.  Thanks to Bryce Pappas and Jack Connor coming out to play at the last minute we didn’t have to cancel the game.   Game Highlights: The only hit of the game went to Pappas on a sharp ground ball down the third baseline for a single.  Mejia was at the center for two great plays - a sharp ground ball to third with a perfect throw to first and a throw from Delaney to Mejia to check a steal to third.

Pitching:

Kuehn : 3 Innings, BF:23, Pitches:93-59 strikes/34 balls giving up 9 Runs on 6 Hits and 8 Errors. K:5, BB:2, HB:1

Reedy: 3 Innings. BF:19, Pitches:80-38 strikes/42 balls giving up 7 Runs on 9 Hits and 1 Error, K:4, BB:1, HB:1

AB: At Bat, BF: Batters Faced, BB: Base on Balls, HB: Hit Batter, K: Strike Out, FO: Fly Out, GO: Ground Out; TO: Thrown Out Stealing; RBI: Runs Batted In

Fall Baseball Game 4 - PAL Astros vs Gambrills

Game Highlights: Hit of the game was a deep drive by Cofran to center field that drove in two runs.  This was a game for great stolen bases with Floyd reacting quickly to a dropped third strike and beating out the throw, then putting himself in scoring position with a quick sprint to second.  Ortel stealing second on the throw from the pitcher and then a great head first slide to take the base, followed by Cofran getting the jump on the pitcher on a steal to second.  A great day for base running.

Pitching:

Kuehn – 2 innings, 52 Pitches, 28 strikes/24 balls, K–1, BB–4, HB-1

Reedy – 3/4 innings, 30 Pitches, 11 strikes/19 balls, K–0, BB–5, HB-1

Blosel – 1 innings, 24 Pitches, 12 strikes/12 balls, K–0, BB–1, HB-0

Joyce - 1.25 innings,  31 Pitches, 17 strikes/14 balls, K–1, BB–3, HB-0

PAL U14 vs Southern Maryland  Sept 21

Hitting was very good with two deep shots to the fence by Cofran and Kuehn for a pair of doubles. Overall plenty of hard hit contact and only three strike outs for the game.  Defense was very impressive with some very quick heads up baseball.  Pitching was not our strong suite on Sunday.  That said Christian Bloesl made his debut on the mound in the last inning with an exceptional performance first time out.  Great job.  Pitchers: Kuehn/Reedy/Bloesl.

Plays of the Day:

1 - Long drive to left center in the gap retrieved by Kuehn at the fence makes a rocket throw to Delaney at home on one hope, runner was about a half step ahead beating the throw, Delaney immediately fires to Wilson at second for a tag on the hitter.

2 – Short ground ball Mejia at third, looks the runner at second back, fires to Delaney at the plate just missing the tag.  Delaney right back to Mejia to tag the runner on the way to third.  The look back and the quick reaction set up the play.

There were multiple plays like this throughout the afternoon.  These were heads up quick fire plays with everyone anticipating the action and being where they were they were needed when they needed to be there. Great job everyone.  Many of our guys are now graduating from playing baseball to baseball players.

Fall Baseball Game 2 - PAL Astros vs RBI3

Sunday was a hot day for baseball in Mudville.  Unfortunately, the outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Astros.  The Team was just not as hot as the weather giving up nine errors for the day.  Game Highlights: a first inning hit to deep right center by Kuehn driving in two runs, two hits for Wilson and runs scored by Blosel, Reedy, Wilson, Joyce and Floyd.  Great job by Cofran at first and Sullivan at third base with a couple of tags each and great saves on bad throws from the mound.   Delaney and Joyce did a great job behind the plate.  Bloesl got his shirt dirty with several great diving attempts and catches at short stop.  Batting continues to improve.  Batters are becoming patient not rushing the swing, forcing the opposing pitchers to throw to them (137 pitches for RBI) and waiting for the right pitch - (9 Hits for PAL).      Overall the guys played well with some real team work beginning to happening but in the end errors cost us the day.

Pitching:

Kuehn – 3 innings, 61 Pitches, 35 strikes/27 balls, 3 Hits, Earned Runs: 2

Remaley – 1.5 innings, 17 strikes/27 balls, 4 Hits, Earned Runs: 3

Reedy - .5 innings, 8 strikes/11 balls, 2 hits, Earned Runs: 2

Sunday September 7th was a great day for the PAL U14 Fall Baseball Opener.

Pitchers Doug Remaley and Miles Kuehn threw five great innings giving up seven runs to the Bruins. The hit of the day went to James Reedy on a well placed hit to right center driving in two runs in the top of the 5th to cap a 10 run day for PAL. Big hitters Miles Kuehn with 2 hits, 2 RBIs, Christian Blosel two hits, James Reedy 1hit, 2 RBIs. Connor Joyce did a great job behind the plate along with Evan Wilson at 2nd and Colin Sullivan at 3rd. Overall 10 runs on 7 hits with Andrew Cofran crossing the plate 3 times followed by Sam Mejia and Christian Blosel with two runs each. H:7 R:10 E:3 AB:34 BB:8 K:4 RBI:6

Week 7 May 17- May 23

Thursday May 22 10U City 2-
PAL City 2 improved to 8-4 and are solidly in 3rd place in the city league with a 15-7 victory over HACA Thrusday evening at PAL Field 1. Kyle Remaley had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs, Will Spanoghe had 2 doubles and Ben Stoy was on base 3 times and scored two runs for the Astro's. Solid Pitching by Jack Pohutsky, Alex Hill and Alex Jennings helped the young Astro's maintain a vice-grip on 3rd place. Astro's coach Mike Hill stated "Coming into the season, we knew we had probably the youngest team in the league. But our kids come to play and I am not surprised by our success this season. I think we can make some noise in the playoff's."

Wednesday May 21- MP 1- The MP 1 Astro's closed out their all too short season on Wednesday.  Mickey Bauer slugged a home-run as the Astro's were on the comback trail late in the contest. With the score 12-9 going into the final inning, the PAL took the field only to find the Astro's opponent was done. Apparently word gets around how the MP 1 team own the 6th inning both defensively and on offense. The Astros MP1 finish the season 8-5-1

PAL Day- MAy 17

10U City- Both PAL teams squared off for a re-match of an earlier contest which PAL 1 had won 11-1.  This time PAL 2 came out on top 10-0. Outstanding pitching by Jack Pohutsky, Tomas Montenegro and Alex Jennings was the deciding factor in the contest. They combined on a 2 hitter- striking out 13. Will Spanoghe had a triple, single and scored three runs and Alex Hill had two hits and scored twice to pace the offense. Tom Flanagan had both hits for the PAL 1 team.

Machine Pitch- In a rematch of an earlier slugfest which MP 2 won  16-14, the score was almost identical but MP 1 won  this time 16-15. Big hits by Justin Cassidy, Eric Kinser, Riley Kayea and Teddy Conrad helped pace the offense. Nick Hill, Brandon Harris, Patrick Conley, Cassidy and Conrad put on a defensive clinic late in the contest allowing the late inning comeback by the MP 1 offense. Connor Smith, Ben Elsnter and Renzi Wieneke had solid games for MP 2.

Week 6 May 10- May 16

A lot of rainouts this week- No games were played from Friday night May 9 until Tuesday May 13.

5/13/08 10U City Hill- The Astros shook off the rust from all the rain and came out on the winning end of a 12-3 score against the ABC Roadrunners at PAL Field 1. Jack Pohutsky was the hitting and pitching star of the game. He pitched the first two innings allowing only one baserunner, striking out four and walking none as the Astros got off to a 6-0 lead after 2 innings. Then in the 4th inning, with the bases loaded, Pohutsky hit a shot into the right center field gap for a bases-clearing triple. Also for the Astros, Connor Portner was on base all three plate appearances including a base hit and Everett Toews was on base twice and scored both times in the winning effort. Tomas Montenegro made two outstanding catches  from his shortstop position on pop-ups that were hit into shallow left field. He doubled up the Roadrunner base runner -who took off from third- on one of those outstanding fielding plays. Montenegro's catch and heads-up throw to third got the Astro's out of a 3rd inning jam. The Astro's City 2 team is now 6-4 on the season

Week 5 - May 3-May 9

10U City 2- Saturday May 3
The 10U City 2 team came back from an 8-3 deficit against Mt. Olive and eventually won the game in the bottom of the 6th 10-9. Timmy Martin brought this exciting game to the brink with a 3-2 count  two outs and the bases loaded in  the 9-9 tie. The time limit was at hand so it was either going to be a win or tie for the young Astro's. Martin delivered, making contact, and sending a sinking pop-up to the Mt.Olive shortstop who was unable to make the grab. However, he quickly found the ball and fired a strike to 2nd base. But the PAL runner, Alex Jennings was hustling all the way and was able to slide in under the throw allowing Tomas Montenegro to cross the plate with the winning run. Montenegro pitched the last two innings allowing only one run and striking out the side in order in the 6th inning to earn the win. Alex Hill was 3-4 including a double, Jennings had a double among his two hits and Ben Stoy was on base three times as the Astros improved to 5-3 on the season.

14U County A-
Mid season Report from Coach Darryl Wright-
Being the first team from PAL in the 14U "A" league ever, I'm pleased to say our record is 4-4 (should be 6-3 but umpires have decided to take runs away, end games early, etc), and as of today we are in 3rd place out of nine teams.  Pitching for us has been a key because we play four games in six days even though one of our starters DJ Wright injured his arm early in the season.  Dan Nowicki has lead our pitching all season and recently earned a win pitching six complete innings and allowing just one run.  Jacob Lantz, Willy Brown, David Winters, and David Cordle all have combined for solid innings each either having a win or save this season.
Our 14 year olds hitting are lead by Willy .688, DJ .637, Jacob .530, and Dan .500 with a out of the park home run at PAL.  Matt Lampe and both Davids all have better than .500 on base percentages.  Defensively our team has turned six double plays and catcher Matt Lampe has nailed runners eight times this young season.  Big catches have been made by outfielder Darrell Mackell who also scores 75% of the times he gets on base.
Our 12 and 13 year olds will be fun to watch next season as well.  I'll start with first baseman and center fielder Andrew Cofran with a .387 batting average and .587 on base percentage.  As catcher for more than half the season, Austin Ortel has been a solid contributor at the hardest position on the field.  Ryan Schubert and cousin Justin Bellinger have played 1st, 2nd and 3rd base as well as all three outfield positions this year already and each have made some huge defensive plays as they both continue hitting better each game.
Our coaches Joe Nowicki, Craig Schubert and I have been able to get our players equal infield and outfield experience as well as batting our lineup for all but one game.  Our philosophy of "the game teaches the game" has been seen in each one of our players as their confidence and experience grows every game.
I'd also like to thank our parents for their support at every game this year.

Week 3- April 19th-25th

Wednesday April 23-
14-C

Wed 4/23 PAL over Edgewater 18-6

10U County A- PAL Red (Sears) 13- PAL Blue- 3

PAL Astro’s Red played PAL Astro’s Blue in a highly anticipated showdown Wednesday night between 2 very good teams. PAL Red jumped to an early 1st inning lead of 5-0 and never let the lead go. Jack Elstner pitched a complete game, only giving up 3 runs, striking out 15, while only walking 4 and giving up 4 hits. Brendan Aumiller, Cameron Webb, and Jack Elstner each had a pair of hits to lead the offense. Elstner supplied 4 of the RBI’s and Aumiller a pair. And it is beginning to show," he added.

Machine Pitch 1- The usually potent Astro's bats were relatively silent this evening and PAL lost a close one to ABC Mensch 7-6 at Bestgate Park. The Astro's had a tough night at the plate going up against a very erratic machine. The ABC fielders however did a nice job making some nice plays against  the balls the Astros did put in play.  With the loss the Astro's fall to 3-2-1 on the season.

Tuesday April 22nd-
10U City 2- The Astros beat Navy 14-9 in a walk -filled game at PAL Tuesday evening. Jack Pohutsky came on in relief in the 3rd and was able to find the strike zone and shut down the Navy hitters to preserve the lead and the victory. Will Spanoghe had an unassisted double play at 3rd base, snaring a line-drive and then stepping on the base to end the game. Mark Bacher had a double and 4 hits, Mickey Bauer was 5-5 and scored 4 runs. Coren Makell had 4 hits including a double and 3 runs scored. Patrick Conley had 5 hits, 3 runs scored and made a nice play at 2nd base.  Justin Cassidy had 4 hits including a triple and was also stellar in the field. And Brandon Harris had 4 hitsas the Astros MP 1 improved to 3-1-1 on the season.

Machine Pitch 2- The Astros improved to 4 and 1 against a strong ABC – Konka team on Saturday at Germantown.  The Astros pulled ahead by one run in the top of the sixth and then “brick wall” fielding in the bottom half of the inning was highlighted by a spectacular diving double-play catch by shortstop, Renzi Wieneke, gave the Astros the 16-15 win.  The solid Astro bats were led by five-for-five Cameron Nolet with a pair of homers and extra base hits by Chandler Carruthers and Conner Smith.

Wednesday April 16th
14U County A- Three pitchers, Nowicki, Winters, and Cordle combined for a 7-0 shutout of RBI Wednesday night at PAL Park.  Not one ball got by our defense with players hustling to back each other up on every play. A crushing double by Matt Lampe and a couple singles by DJ Wright, provided the hits necessary and PAL was able to get runners on base with walks.  Once on base, the Astro's ran aggressively creating scoring opportunities.

10U County A- PAL Team Blue came out swinging and beat the Pasadena Eagles 9-8. Graeme Joyce led the way for PAL on the mound during a back and forth game for three innings. One bad inning midway through the game put PAL behind 8-3 going in the fifth and final inning. Juan McKinney stepped to throw three straight strikeouts during the top of the fifth. Patience at the plate and clutch hitting let PAL score the maximum number of runs for the 9-8 win. Jamie Burk went 2-2 (2 RBIs), Graeme Joyce went 3-3, and Andy Rozylowicz went 3-3 with the game winning RBI to end the game.

Tuesday April 15th-
10U City- The two PAL city teams met in an early season contest with PAL 1 prevailing 11-1. It was a close contest for the first part of the game as the score was tied 1-1 after 3 innings. But PAL 1 was making contact and in the 4th inning their aggresiveness at the plate paid off as they broke the game open. Luke Dewitt, Cameron Carruthers and Connor Berry each had 2 hits and scored two runs for the winning PAL 1 effort. Skippy Helmly had a solid triple as well. Justin Davenport, Connor Berry and James Cardillo combined on the three hitter and had 14 strikeouts. Alex Hill was 2-2 and Aiden Griffin was on base twice including a single for PAL 2.

Monday April 14th

Patrick Conley led off the game with a hard hit double and scored a run and had some nice plays at 3rd base. Justin Cassidy had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.  Teddy Conrad  and Mickey Bauer each drove in a run with a hard hit single. RileyKayea made a great play on a hard-hit smash to 3rd base.Nick Hill was 3 for 3 and Coren Makell had a solid single for the winning Astro's who moved to 2-1-1 on the season.

Saturday April 12th-

Nick Hill was 2 for 2 including a double, Garrett Parkins had a triple and Brandon Harris had a double and made a nice fielding play at 3rd. Mickey Bauer made a shoe string catch at 2nd base for the defensive highlight of the day.

Astros Machine Pitch 2 dropped to 2- 1 in a rain soaked 12 to 6 loss to Mt. Olive on Saturday

10U City-
City 10U team  ( Cardillo) lost a tough one to Boys and Girls Club 5-2
Astros 10U City 2 (Hill) game got rained out.

10U County-
PAL Team Blue (Rozylowicz) won a squeaker in Pasadena, 8-7. Graeme Joyce gave up 1 run over four innings went 2 for 3 at the plate.  Aidan Fowler  who came in with several runners on base struck out three of the last four batters to earn the save.

PAL Astros Red had 2 games this weekend:

In game 1 Friday night vs. RBI at Riva Park:

PAL fell behind with some first inning of the season jitters 6-0. After some aggressive baserunning and shut out pitching from Emory Sears and Jack Elstner, PAL was able to battle back and tie the game. Unfortunately a run in the last inning prevented the comeback victory; however it was a great showing for this team’s first venture in County baseball. Nick Sabatini scored 3 runs and put on a clinic at 1st base and the base paths. PAL- 6 RBI- 7.

In game 2 Saturday vs Pasadena Eagle at Popular Ridge:

With NO jitters this time, PAL came out swinging the bat. Donavon Privette started things off right away with a first pitch single and 2 stolen bases. In the next innings, a double and triple from David Bauer, a legit 2 run homerun to right by Joey Olmo, and a 2 hit night from Brendan Aumiller lead the attack in jumping to a quick 9-2 lead. Patience at the plate from Donavon, Tre Damico, and Emory Sears, who each walked twice gave these bats all the baserunners they needed. Emory and Tre turned a couple double plays and Brendan Looney sealed the deal with 2 great fielding plays and throws from 3rd. PAL 14  Pasadena Eagles 13.

12U-
County B- The Astros County B team won 12-7 against the Brooklyn Park Warriors.   Kenny Armiger got the Astros off to a great start shutting down their hitters for two innings and driving in three runs with a triple in the second inning.   James Reedy drove in two in the second inning and made a great catch in the outfield later in the game.   Patrick Sullivan, Brady McMillan, and Mike Delaney each scored two runs in the winning effort.

14U-
County A- Game #1 of the double header in Shady Side.
After four innings PAL was losing 10-2.  Top of the fifth, the umpire declares it the last inning, and PAL scores 10 runs with runners still on 2nd and 3rd and just one out.  The field umpire (who is also the interpreter of rules for all umpires) then stops the game due to time restraints and takes 3 runs off the books explaining the "last inning in a 14U game is the 7th, and awards PAL's opponent the victory.  PAL obviously feels the umpires interpretation of the rule cost PAL a hard-fought come from behind win.

Game #2
Batting all 12 players PAL continued hitting and running well with the final winning score of 8-4.  Defensively, a little rusty and over pursued some balls  but the Astro's made the plays when it meant the most.

Darryl Wright our 14 U coach  didn't want to single out any one individual since the day was such an exciting team effort.  He did offer this quote, "Life isn't always fair and calls don't always go your way, but its how you respond as an individual and team that shows your true character"!!
GO ASTROS!!

Week 1- April 5- April 11

10 City-
Astros 1 Cardillo opened the season with a hard fought game against Mt. Olive. Some early season problems finding the strike zone cost the Astros as Mt. Olive was taking all the way and waltzed around the bases to a 12-8 victory.

The Astros 2 Hill opened the season with a tough 16-4 loss  to a hard hitting and throwing ABC Hit men team. The young Astros hung in there but some early season mistakes cost them in the decisive 4th inning.

The Astros 2 Hill won their first game of the season 7-6 as Everett Toews who got plunked in the leg came around to score the winning run  in the bottom of the 6th on a grounder by Timmy Martin. Christopher Fitch had knocked in Ben Stoy to tie the score one batter earlier.

In the top of the 6th with a runner on 3rd and no outs and ABC Davis up by 1-, center fielder Alex Jennings made a tremendous catch on a sinking pop-up right at the grass and then threw to 3rd to double the runner who broke for home.

Kyle Remaley hit a home run with a shot down the right field line and Alex Hill had 2 doubles to pace the offense.

Astro's pitchers had 13 strikeouts and only 2 walks (and 1 HBP).  Hill struck out 5- walked none- 1 HBP - Jack Pohutsky struck out 4 with 0 walks- Will Spanoghe struck out 3- walked 2, and Tomas Montenegro struck out 1 and earned the win.

This was truly a complete team effort.

April 11th- 10U A Friday Night League
PAL Team Blue lost to the Annapolis Hurricanes 2-0 in a tough defensive battle. Pitchers on both sides were throwing smoke and numerous innings ended with plays at the plate (great job by David Love of the Astros with consecutive outs at catcher with bases loaded). Kudos to the Hurricanes pitcher who threw a complete game shut out. Congrats to both teams on a well-played game!
