Grid Iron Ernie's Predictions
1. South Hagerstown
Last Season: (8-4 overall, 6-3, MVAL)
Coach: Greg Kellick (64-88)
The Rebels are coming off their first playoff appearance in school history and South's chances of returning look good with Western Maryland's best all-around athlete--David Miner--returning.
The South defense gave up only 9.4 points per game last season. That will be hard to duplicate, especially with all-area defensive lineman Clayton Swisher gone. The Green Machine returns linebacker and leading tackler Josh Bussard (81 tackles), defensive lineman James Price, and playmaker Miner---so the South defense should still be strong.
The Rebel offense will be led by a strong offense line--which will give Miner time to do what he wants. Add a few other athletes (which South always has) to the mix and the Rebels could best their 2002 school record for points.
Head Coach Greg Kellick has led the Rebs to 20-12 record and a playoff berth over the last three seasons after a winless 1999. Another winning campain is a lock, but another playoff appearance could be a little harder with South moving to 2A---but don't bet against it. Look for the Southsiders to be the MVAL-Antietam Division's first champion.
2. Catoctin
Last Season: (6-4 Overall, 5-4 MVAL)
Coach: Doug Williams (46-74, 84-104-1 overall)
Head Coach Doug William's scrum offense is far from ordinary, but last season it helped gain the Cougars six victories. Catoctin returns several key players from their successful 2002 season, including Quarterback Jason Johnson and Running back Ben Hobbs. Vince Reaver and Dave Burrier should also contribute on Catoctin's tricky offense.
The defense should again be solid with several returners there. Catoctin defeated pre-seaaon number one South Hagerstown last season at home. This season the Rebels have the home game, and look for this game to be a battle. A big road win verses South could propel the Cougars to a playoff berth and decide the Antietam Division.
The Cougars have some tough games on their schedule with bigger schools (Joppatowne, Walkersville, South Carroll), but with a few breaks in those games, the town of Thurmont may be filled with excitement in the second week on November.
3. Brunswick
Last Season: (5-5 overall, 4-5 MVAL)
Coach: Kevin Lynott (1st season)
New coach Kevin Lynott should have a solid squad for his first season in Brunswick. Brandon Dykes is gone but the 'Roaders will fill his shoes with a very good running back in Dexter Henderson. In 2002 with Dykes as the primary back, Henderson still managed to rush for 722 yards and ten touchdowns. This season, Henderson could double those numbers.
The defense should be Brunswick's strength. The 'Roaders gave up 23.4 points per game in 2002 and if Lynott and the Railroaders what a successful season---that will have to improve. With Henderson, Phil Cooper, and Tyler Spurlock returning, the defense should be tough. The Railroaders have been up and down the past few years. This season could go either way--especially with a new coach.
4. North Hagerstown
Last Season: (2-8 overall, 2-7 MVAL)
Coach: Dan Cunningham (6-14)
The Hubs are coming off a 2-8 season---but with some optimisim. North returns offensive stars Quielan Gantt and Derrick Keith, and has a strong JV team moving to varsity. Gantt may move to wideout giving the Hubs their best deep threat since Scottie Rice. If head coach Danny Cunningham can fill Gantt's spot at quarterback and the offensive line can step up, the Hub offense could be explosive.
North's defense gave up 31.2 points per game last season--look for that to improve as the Hubs return several defensive starters. Keith, John Kline, Phillip Johns, Mitch Wolters, and newcomers Dean Staley and Leon Finley will lead the North D.
In his third year, Cunningham is looking for his skill players to carry North, but with good line play and a improved defense---the Hubs could turn plenty of heads.
5. Smithsburg
Last Season: (3-7 overall, 2-7 MVAL)
Coach: Buddy Orndorff (16-39)
The Leopards will be a carbon copy of North Hagerstown. Smithsburg is coming off a 3-7 campain and had strong JV squad last season. Buddy Orndorff is entering his seventh full season and has tried to return the Leopards to the glory years under Carroll Reid---but it's been tough road. This season may be different.
Missing will be star running back Dustin Sier. Senior Nate Steelman and Sophomore Justin Thompson will look to fill Seir's void, and Orndorff will have to find a new quarterback for the Leopards to be successful. Second team All-MVAL receiver Zach Keifer will be Smithsburg's pass catching threat and Wayne Rumbaugh will be the Leopards top lineman.
Linebacker Kevin Orsini and defensive lineman Scott White will anchor the defense.
If returners from last season and players from the JV's can step up--the Leopards could make some noise in the Antietam Division.
6. Boonsboro
Last Season: (5-5 overall, 5-4 MVAL)
Coach: Clayton Anders (107-81)
Last season was expected to be a down year in Boonsboro. The Warriors suprised a lot of people with a respectful 5-5 season. Coach Clayton Anders has done a great job by building a solid program in the 'Boro. The Warriors have not had a losing season since 1991.
This season the Warriors will have to replace their heart & soul---Nate Himes. Also missing will be speedy quaterback Brett Morrell. Alex Malphrus could step in at quarterback and Dan Robinson and Derek Wisner should contribute in the backfield.
Wisner and Josh Lum will lead the defense at linebacker and junior A.J. Schell will anchor the defensive line. Anders will have to do another great coaching job to pull the Warriors out of the bottom part of the Antietam division, but like in season's past---he has.
7. Williamsport
Last Season: (0-10, 0-9 MVAL)
Coach: Adrian Custer (1st season)
Seventeen straight. That's the number the 2003 Williamsport Wildcats and brand new Head Coach Adrian Custer will be trying to break. The Wildcats have dropped seventeen straight games dating back to 2001. Williamsport will enter this season with some optimism. Returners include Dustin Bachtell, Todd McDonald, Ben Vatavuk, Neil Forsyth, and Mike O'Haver.
Custer took over after Michaels took a administrators job (Washington County prohibates administrators from be athletic coaches). He (Custer) will only have a few days to get things in order and prepare the Cats for the upcoming season. After working closely with Michaels over the last couple of years, the transistion should go smoothly.
Look for the Cats to break that horrible streak this season, but multiple wins may be hard to come by.
You don't want to miss these games...
Antietam Division Games
9/5 Walkersville at South Hagerstown
A great opener for both teams. Both squads should have solid seasons and this could be a big jump start for who ever wins this one.
9/19 Catoctin at Walkersville
This game will feature a top team from the Antietam Division (Catoctin) verses a top team from the Piedmont Division (Walkersville).
9/19 Frederick at North Hagerstown
Two old rivals meet for the first time since 1986. These two schools met every year between (1956-1986). Should be a good game to watch---especially for the oldtimers that played in this game.
9/19 Severn at South Hagerstown
South faces a private school from the MIAA. This will be an intriguing matchup.
10/3 Catoctin at South Hagerstown
The battle for the MVAL-Antietam Division should be decided in this matchup. Catoctin upset South by one-point last season in Thurmont.
10/10 South Hagerstown at Frankfort-WV
One of the top teams in Western Maryland (South Hagerstown) verses a yearly West Virginia power (Frankfort).
10/31 South Carroll at Catoctin
South Carroll travels to Thurmont, which is a very tough place to play. The Cavaliers are coming off eight wins and the Cougars are coming off six wins---both could be as strong this season.
11/7 Smithsburg at Boonsboro
A season ending and county rivalry that always has excitement. Smithsburg with only two wins upset Boonsboro last season, ruining the Warriors chance for a winning season.
11/7 North Hagerstown at South Hagerstown
This battle was renamed the "Hagerstown Gridiron Classic" last year. South Hagerstown embarrassed the Hubs 39-0 last season, but this game is usually a battle.

GRID IRON ERNIE'S PREDICTIONS
1. Middletown
Last Season: (11-2 overall, 8-1 MVAL)
Coach: Tim Ambrose (238-68)
The Middletown football program has been the New York Yankees of the MVAL---the team to beat year in and year out. With the MVAL spliting into three divisions and a new schedule on the horizion, the Knights will now have the chance to play other top teams in the area.
The Knight's strength will again be their offensive line, with Jerrod Cline, Andy Presnel, and Mike Holda leading the way. Tyler Lushbaugh will return as the Knight signal caller---the senior had good showing in the elite 100 workouts. Also returning to the Knight offense will be running back Shawn Beachley, returning after a freak accident cut his season short last year.
The defense should be tops in the division. Middletown's trademark has been their strong defense every year. Dan McCallion, Chris Nichols, and Jerrod Cline will lead this unit.
A schedule that will be a little tougher (Frederick, Urbana, Thomas Johnson, South Carroll) could add another loss or two, but don't expect it. Middletown should be the top dog in their new division and clinch a 2A West playoff spot---again.
2. South Carroll
Last Season: (8-2 overall, 5-2 CMC)
Coach: Gene Brown (52-58)
South Carroll will enter 2003 in a division with totally different teams. The Cavaliers were the only school to move to a division with unfamiliar opponents. The Cavs leave Urbana, TJ, Frederick, Linganore, and North Carroll behind and welcome Middletown, Walkersville, Francis Scott Key, Century, and Winters Mills.
The Cavs are coming off their best season (8-2) under Head Coach Gene Brown. But playing in 3A kept them out of the post season. This season the Cavs move to 2A and will be in the west region.
The Cavaliers have one of the best QB's in the Piedmont Division, if not the entire MVAL. T.J. Swanson returns at QB after a strong showing in the elite 100 workouts over the summer. Tyler Kraus will be Swanson's main target, although the Cavs will show a lot of four-wide looks.
Swanson and Kraus will also be a factor on defense, both had six INT's last season and will look for more this season.
The schedule will still be tough. Games with solid teams like Westminster, Linganore, Francis Scott Key, Middletown, Walkersville, and Catoctin await. If the Cavs get through those games with a winning record, the season could get extended to the second week of November.
3. Francis Scott Key
Last Season: (8-2 overall, 7-2 MVAL)
Coach: John Baugher (8-2)
Francis Scott Key will have a head coach return for the first time since the 2000 season. John Baugher returns after a 8-2 campain and with the Eagles giving MVAL champion, Middletown, their worst loss in school history.
Blake Gassaway and Daniel Bridges return to the FSK offensive line and Josh Rutter, Layton Hersh, and Brian Horr return to be Eagle playmakers. One question mark will be finding a quarterback---Key will have to find a replacement for departing Andy Akers.
One thing that could damage the Eagles playoff hopes in 2003 could be a much tougher schedule. Added opponents include Westminster, South Carroll, Century, and Urbana. FSK has the talent to compete for a post season berth, but this season they will have to prove it against the big dogs.
4. Walkersville
Last Season: (5-5 overall, 5-4 MVAL)
Coach: Hal Grau (47-34, 118-96 overall)
The last three seasons have been considered disappointments in Da'Ville. Last season a (5-5) campain was viewed by most as a underachievment by a talented squad. This season could be the year the Lions move back with the head of the pack.
Backs Tony Fiammetta and Antoine Crawford give Walkersville two quality threats out of the backfield. Both could reach the 1000-yard plateau this season. Talented Junior Dave Berry will step in at quarterback, while Brandon Geppart will be Berry's main target at wideout.
The defense should feature Fiammetta at linebacker, Travis Hubbard on the D-line and Geppart as a defensive back.
The schedule is tougher than normal, but this group of Lions should handle it well. Walkersville has to travel to three of the top four teams on their schedule. A 4-0 or 3-1 stretch could give Da'Ville plenty to celebrate, especially in November.
5. Century
Last Season: (1-9 overall)
Coach: Matt Flanagan (1-9)
6. Winters Mill
Last Season: (first season)
Coach: Speedy Johnson (1st yr, 112-77 overall)
Top Piedmont Division Games
9/12 Middletown at Urbana
Two of the most successful teams in the history of Frederick County will battle in a regular season game for the first time.
9/19 Francis Scott Key at Westminster
FSK will play at Westminster. These two Carroll County school will also finally play a regular season game.
9/19 Linganore at South Carroll
The top dog in the Chesapeake Division verses one of the top dogs in the Piedmont Division.
9/25 Francis Scott Key at Middletown
FSK destroyed Middletown last season, giving the Knights their worst loss ever. The Knights will look for some revenge on their home field.
10/3 Francis Scott Key at South Carroll
Two more Carroll County schools will meet in a meaningful division game.
10/10 Middletown at South Carroll
This game could decide the Piedmont Division title. Preseason #1 vs #2.
10/16 Francis Scott Key at Walkersville
The team that wins this game could position themselves for a playoff spot.
10/24 Walkersville at South Carroll
The Lions and Cavs should also have plenty on the line in this game.
10/31 Urbana at Francis Scott Key
A rematch of the 2000 2A Quarterfinals. Urbana crushed the Eagles in that game, this season the Hawks travel to Union Bridge.
