Week of Feb. 4th News
1. HCW End of Year Tournament - Sat. Feb. 9, 2013 at Gary J. Arthur (Glenwood) Community Center.
(I am going to submit our rosters for the tournament Monday night, so please let me know if your son will not be able to attend this final HCW league event. )
Please note that the ‘HCW – Schedule Final’ posted in the handouts section is not accurate as far as start times for the EOY tournament. Similar to the Holiday tournament, this tournament will have staggered start times:
WC 0 – 11 – 9:00 am (wrestlers should arrive no later than 8:30 am)
WC 12 – HWT – 1:00 pm (wrestlers should arrive no later than 12:30 pm)
I am expecting once again that Burtonsville will be responsible for working the scorers table for mat 4, so please be willing to step up and help in this capacity.
This tournament will mark the conclusion of the season for any wrestler who does not place in the top 4 of “A” brackets and who will not be attending any additional MSWA events.
Wrestlers who place in the top 4 of “A” brackets will qualify for the Mid-Maryland Regional Tournament to be held Saturday Feb 23, 2013 at Tuscorora High School in Frederick, MD. The entry fee for this tournament is $25 and must be paid this Saturday by cash or check (payable to HCW, INC).
2. MD State "Future Champions" tournament at Poolesville HS, Sunday Feb 10, 2013 (optional)
This Sunday, we will have coaching support at this MSWA Novice tournament at Poolesville HS. The details for the tournament are found in the 'Handouts' menu item of our website (MSWA Future Champions Tournament Schedule)... Please note that the location of this tournament is not at the Landon School and will now be held at Poolesville HS. Too many details for me to explain in this 'News' update, so please read the tournament flyer.
This is an optional tournament not covered by the registration dues paid at the beginning of the season. Our wrestlers should all have active USAW cards, so you do not have to pay that cost, just the $20 tournament registration fee (or $27 if you do not pre-register).
Wrestlers who participate in 2 Novice events are eligible for the "Novice" state tournament held at Loyola Blakefield HS in Towson, MD on Sun Feb. 17th. Registration for this event opens on 2/11/13, so please register early as this event could fill up quickly.
3. Pictures
Thanks for everyone’s cooperation with the pictures last Saturday. I know it was a little chaotic, but I think everyone will like what we are putting together. Instead of using the company supplied by the league, we decided to go our own way. The aunt of Nicholas Banks and Jason Strattonbey, Chez Sparrow, is in the process of starting up her own photography business and she has offered to create a photo collage for each family at minimal cost. We are going to use the proceeds from this effort to defray the cost of trophies for the kids or if we are able to secure funds for the trophies by other means, I would like to compensate Chez for her time. More info to come.
Week of Jan. 28th News
1. Saturday Feb. 2nd dual meets at North Laurel Community Center
We had quite a few wrestlers who were not able to participate in this past weekend's round robin tournament, so it is important that everyone try to attend our final dual meets this weekend so that all wrestlers can get a weigh in for the end of year tournament. We are in the home stretch of the season, so I want to finish strong.
Once again, we need a few parents from Burtonsville Gold to show up at 8 to help set up the gym. We will also need a few parents from Burtonsville Maroon to stick around to help break down the gym.
Burtonsville Gold (visitor) vs. Vipers Reservoir - 9:00 a.m.
Wrestlers should arrive by 8:30 a.m. for warm ups.
Bench coaches will be Munsey, Burger, Munoz
Please let Coach Munsey know if you are available to do that. If your wrestler cannot attend, please email/text/call Coach Munsey asap at joshua_h_munsey@mcpsmd.org (301-785-6241)
Burtonsville Maroon (home) vs. Vipers Marriotts Ridge - 11:30 a.m.
Wrestlers should arrive by 11 a.m. for warm ups.
Bench coaches will be Nogle, Washington, Isolato
We will need 2 parents to work the scorers table. Please let Coach Nogle know if you are available to do that. If your wrestler cannot attend, please email/text/call Coach Nogle asap...
2. Pictures - Saturday Feb. 2nd
If your son already received picture forms at practice, please disregard and dispose of the form. We are going to try to arrange a group picture with both teams around 11:00 am. Parents of Maroon team wrestlers, please make sure your son(s) are at the North Laurel Community Center by about 10:50 am. After we take the group picture, I am going to have a parent or relative take individual shots, and then we are going to try to put something together for cheap through snapfish (something of the like of a collage print)...More details to come.
3. Jan. 26th Round Robin Recap
Thanks to all of our parents who helped work the scorers table at the Round Robin tournament last Saturday. Almost all of our parents who helped out were working the scorers table for the first time, and they all did an ourstanding job. Without adequate parent help, we cannot hold events in the format like the round robin, and these events that give each wrestler an opportunity to get in 2 or 3 matches are really important in the development of our wrestlers.
Once again our wrestlers did well and generally were given an opportunity to wrestle 2 or 3 matches against equal competition. I thought our commissioner and other coaches our league did an outstanding job of grouping the wrestlers not only by weight, but also by experience and ability.
Week of Jan. 21st News
1. Normal practice schedule resumes Tuesday Jan. 22nd
2. Saturday January 26 Round-Robin tournament at the Gary J. Arthur (Glenwood) Community Center.
This is the 2nd of these type of events on our schedule. They are a great opportunity for each kid to get up to 3 matches within a 2 hour time frame. After all kids in a session are weighed in, the tournament director lines them up along the wall and assigns them to groups of 4, so all of the kids will be placed in a group with kids close to their age/weight.
Please see below for the appropiate start times for each age division. Please make sure your son arrives at the appropriate Weigh-in time. This event is part of our regular league schedule, but since the coaches do not have to work the match ups in advance, it is not necessary to let them know if your son will not be able to attend. (Unless there is a prior commitment or illness, we do expect all wrestlers to participate.)

3. MD "Future Champions" tournament at Oakland Mills recap.
Glad to hear that 13 BWC wrestlers participated in this tournament. This is the first tournament in 3 years that I've promoted to our club that I've been unable to attend, but we did have coaches present at every session and I really wanted to encourage our wrestlers to participate. These 'Future champions' series events are a great opportunity for our wrestlers to get additional matches against wrestlers with similar experience. Yes, there are usually a few wrestlers who participate who probably don't belong at these type of events, but for the most part these tournaments are contested among wrestlers with similar experience and wrestling ability. 9 of our wrestlers placed in the top 3 of their respective RR brackets, and we probably would have had more if a few of our wrestlers would not have been grouped into 5 or 6 man brackets. Congrats to the following wrestlers who placed in the top 3:
Tots: Cade Munoz - 2nd, Kareem Fisher - 1st
Bantam: Adidi Ahmed - 2nd
Intermediate: Brian McCaw - 1st, Kemit Fisher - 2nd, Eric Washington - 3rd
Novice: Isaiah Brown - 2nd, Kyle Isolato - 2nd
Schoolboy: Max Redman - 3rd
Note: Some wrestlers competed in groups for wrestlers with 3-4 yrs of experience
Week of Jan. 14th News
1. Saturday Jan. 19th dual meets at Gary J. Arthur (Glenwood) Community Center
Finally, both teams get to wrestle in the same time slot. We will need a few parents from each team to show up at 8 to help set up the gym. This week both of our teams are designated as visitor so we are not required to provide table help, but help is not usually turned away, so if anyone would like to step up and work a table, it is always appreciated.

2. MD State "Future Champions" tournament at Oakland Mills HS, Sunday Jan. 20, 2013 (optional)
This Sunday, we will have coaching support at this MSWA Novice tournament at Oakland Mill HS. The details for the tournament are found in the 'Handouts' menu item of our website (MSWA Future Champions Tournament Schedule)....too many details for me to explain in this 'News' update, so please read the tournament flyer.
This is an optional tournament not covered by the registration dues paid at the beginning of the season. Our wrestlers should all have active USAW cards, so you do not have to pay that cost, just the $20 tournament registration fee (or $27 if you do not pre-register).
Many of our wrestlers are still considered Novice or Intermediate (those who are not know who they are), so this tournament is a nice opportunity to wrestle some different competition outside of our league.
At this level, I am not a huge advocate of wrestling both days of the weekend (always concerned about burnout), but if your son seems interested, then I don't think it would hurt to give it a shot once in a while.
Please feel free to email or call if you have any questions.

2. Sunday Dec. 9 Mat Bash tournament at Damascus High School. Again, this is completely optional and involves an additional cost of $20.
I don't want to overwhelm parents or wrestlers with too much wrestling, but there are those families in the organization who want to be aware of all of the opportunities that are available and this event is one such event. Historically, it has been a well run event where wrestlers have the chance to wrestle 3 matches within a 2-3 hour time frame.
Opening weekend recap...
I thought the first dual meet at the North Laurel Community Center went well. Our teams wrestled well and the kids quickly picked up how a dual wrestling meet goes down.
The kids have been working hard in the practice room, and that hard work carried over into live competition. Coach Munsey and I do our best to keep the practices fun, but most of our time is spent on learning positioning and technique with minimal games and time filler activities. At the end of the day, the sport is more fun if we are competitive.
One thing that I would like to see improved is our matside attentiveness when wrestlers are not competing, but that has been addressed, so I am expecting our Panther wrestlers who are not on the mat to be encouraging their teammates this weekend.
Week of Nov. 26th
1. Practice Monday Nov 26 will be at Paint Branch rather than Springbrook. The high school referees are using the Springbrook room for their annual rules meeting, so we can't get into the room. Rather than cancel practice, we will just hold the practice at Paint Branch, so I really hope to see my normal Monday crew at Paint Branch this Monday.
2. Team assignments have been made. All wrestlers are assigned to either the 'Maroon' team or the 'Gold' team. Please see the 'Teams' menu item on our website for the team that your son has been assigned to. As I've mentioned before, the teams don't mean a whole lot to us at Burtonsville. We consider ourselves one organization, but we do have to divide the kids into 2 teams for the dual meets. I try my best to divide the teams equally by size and ability.
3. First Dual Meet - Sat. Dec 1st. See 'Handouts' Menu item for HCW Schedule - Final. Both the Maroon team and the Gold team compete at 9 am. Wrestlers should arrive no later than 8:30 for warm ups. We need a few parents to show up at 8 to help set up the gym. We will also need 2 parents from the Gold team to work the scorers table, since the Gold team is designated as the Home team. As I mentioned in both parents meetings, please let me know as soon as possible if you son cannot attend the meet.
4. MSWA Novice tournament (optional) - Sunday Dec. 2nd at the McDonogh School
Once again, these Novice tournaments are generally for wrestlers in their 1st or 2nd year of wrestling who have never placed in a tournament before.
See 'Handouts' menu item 'MSWA Future Champions Tournament Schedule' for further details.
We will try to have coaching support at this tournament, but this has not been confirmed yet.
5. This is the last week that we will accept registrations, so if you know of anyone who may be interested in giving wrestling a shot, please encourage them to register with us.
BWC Summer Session
Once again, this summer I (Coach Nogle) will be running practices two nights per week out of Springbrook HS from Monday May 14th through the end of July. I am happy to announce that Coach Munsey will not only be assisting, but will be running the practices on Monday evenings.
These practices are open to wrestlers from any school or club who have wrestled at least one winter season. There will be two separate sessions, a two night per week session for 7th graders and up (and advanced junior leaguers) and a one night per week session for less experienced junior leaguers. Due to lack of space, we will restrict registration to 30 wrestlers for each session.
These sessions are intended for wrestlers who are serious about improving their skills. Coach Munsey and I are not going to get bent out of shape when you have to miss an occasional practice, but if you are not going to be able to attend on a consistent basis, you should not register. Our practices may not be as progressive as what occurs in the winter season, but they will still build on techniques covered in previous sessions, so it is frustrating to consistent attendees when we have to waste time covering techniques that were addressed in previous sessions.
Full Details on BWC Summer Session:
Advanced Session - Grades 7 and up (and beltway/travel level junior leaguers)
Location: Springbrook HS wrestling room
Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays starting May 14 through the end of July (At the conclusion of the school year, the Wednesday night practice may move to Thursdays)
Time: 7:00 - 8:30
Cost: $40 + USAW card (approx $35)
Rec/Intramural Session - Grades K through 6
Location: Springbrook HS wrestling room
Dates: Wednesdays starting May 16 through the end of July (At the conclusion of the school year, the Wednesday night practice may move to Thursdays)
Time: 7:00 - 8:30
Cost: $30 + USAW card (approx $35)
- We never exclude wrestlers with financial hardships. If money is an issue, please speak to Coach Munsey or me and we can work something out. We only exclude wrestlers who can't commit or don't want to work.
Week of Feb 27th news
Banquet Details
Similar to last year, we will have an informal banquet in the Paint Branch cafeteria to formally conclude the season and present the wrestlers with participation and special achievement awards. Details below...
Date: Monday March 5, 2012
Time: 6:00 - 7:30
Where: Paint Branch HS cafeteria
Who: Families and wrestlers of Burtonsville clinic and rec teams
Assumption: That wrestlers will be there unless I am emailed otherwise.
What to bring:
$5-$10 family contribution for pizza and cake
Additional dish that would be a good idea for a banquet (optional)
Singlet for return!!!
Mid-MD Tournament Recap
It was no surprise that Burtonsville Panthers went out with a bang at the final season of the tournament...the Mid-MD championships at Damascus HS. This tournament brings together the top 4 wrestlers from the Damascus, Montgomery, Carroll, and Howard County leagues. Our program was represented by 18 wrestlers with 10 wrestlers placing in the top 6. The coaching staff was extremely pleased by the effort put forth by all wrestlers, not just those who placed, as we have been the whole season.
Below are the results for those who placed in the top 6 from our program:
5th - Jace Munoz (WC 0), Coleman Nogle (WC 1), Sam Redman (WC 21), Aaron Genovez (WC 24)
3rd - Grayson Wendel (WC 3), Evan Cawthorne (WC 7)
2nd - Austin Smith (WC 19), Patrick O'Hearn (WC 20), Eddie Rivera (WC HWT)
1st - Ian Cawthorne (WC 13)

HCW EOY tournament recap
To say that our coaching staff was pleased with our results from this season and the EOY tournament this past Saturday would be an understatement. Each and every one of our Panther wrestlers put forth 100% effort and the results showed. Out of our 30 wrestlers in "A" brackets, 20 placed in the top 4 and qualified for the mid-MD regional tournament to be held this Sunday February 26th at Damascus High School (we also had 4 wrestlers place in the top 4 of "B" brackets). 17 of those 20 who qualified will participate in the mid-MD tournament, which really pleases not only our coaching staff, but our HCW commissioner who wants our league well-represented at this event.
The emphasis in this league is not team standing, but team scores are kept at the EOY tournament, so I wanted to share our results.
Panther's Gold placed 3rd (33 points)
Panther's Maroon placed 4th (29 points)
Mid-MD qualifier details
This week we will practice at Springbrook on Monday and Thursday from 6:30-8:00.
Again, the Mid-MD tournament is held at Damascus High School on Sunday February 26th.
Weight Classes 0-13 wrestle at 8:30 am and should arrive at 8:00 am.
Weight Classes 14-26, HWT wrestle at 2:30 pm and should arrive at 2:00 pm.
See 'Directions' menu item for directions to Damascus High School.
I will also try to post the flyer for the tournament in the 'Handouts' menu item.
MSWA State Novice tournament recap
As usual, BWC was once again well represented at the final Novice series tournament. 12 of our wrestlers participated in this final event with 8 placing in the top 4 (2 firsts, 1 second, 4 thirds, 1 fourth).
Banquet Details
As soon as the trophy order comes in, I will work with Coach Smith to finalize a date for the banquet, but I am tentatively shooting for an evening the week of March 5th.
Week of Feb 13th news
Wednesday Feb. 15th practice at Springbrook canceled
Wednesday Feb. 15th scrimmage vs. Olney Rec teams at PB HS gym - 6:00-8:30 pm
This event kind of snuck up on me at the last minute, but Wednesday Feb. 15th we will be scrimmaging rec teams from the Olney program. We have gotten away from this event the last two years, and we are bringing it back this year. We use this as a competitive opportunity to unite the 2 programs and allow our advanced wrestlers to meet the wrestlers who will be their future teammates when they advance to the B&O Outlaws beltway program. I never like to exclude any kids, but due to time considerations all kids will not get an opportunity to wrestle. We will probably only have time for about 25-30 matches. In general, our most advanced wrestlers will be selected, but some less advanced wrestlers will have an opportunity to wrestle when a suitable match up presents itself. I will do everything I can to notify those in advance who will not have a match.
Thursday practice at PB will be optional for all in the program, but is especially encouraged for those who would need it to get in a 2nd night of wrestling for the week. I understand that his is a weeknight event scheduled at the last minute, but it was the only time we could get the gym.
Please email me (Coach Nogle) with questions.
HCW End of Year Tournament - at Glenwood!!!!
Saturday Feb. 18th, 9:00 am at Glenwood
Note that this is a change in location from the published schedule. I'm not sure of the reason for the change. Nobody is more disappointed about the change in location as me, but please make sure you go to Glenwood rather than North Laurel.
All wrestlers should arrive by 8:30. I don't know how long it will last, but be prepared for a long day. Top 4 wrestlers in "A" brackets advance to the Mid-Maryland Regional tournament to be held at Damascus HS on Sunday Feb. 26th
Maryland Future Champions State Tournament at Loyola Blakefield HS - Sunday Feb 19th - optional
Those who have participated in 2 Novice events are eligible for this "Novice" state tournament. I'm pretty sure we have about 15 wrestlers who are eligible. Please register early as this event could fill up quickly. This will make for a long weekend, but it could serve as the last event of the season for those who do not qualify for the Mid-Maryland Regional Tournament at Damascus. We will do our best to provide coaching for the duration of the event.
Registration can be accessed at the following link (Future Champions):

Past weekend recap
I have thoughts from this past weekend, but they will have to wait for another day as I really wanted to get the aforementioned information out as quickly as possible.
Week of Feb 6th news
Past weekend recap
Thanks to all parents and wrestlers for their commitment this past weekend by wrestling on Super Bowl Sunday and to "Gold" team members and selected "Maroon" team members for participating in the double header dual meet. As we are coming to learn, sometimes we have good days while others are not so good. This past weekend was a tough one for both teams, but as I looked through the official results, we held our own in matches where the age/weight differential was less than or equal to 1 weight class.
I know that the wrestling season is a long one, and we've had minimal weather disruptions this year, so the season is starting to drain on some kids (my sons included), but I really want to finish the season strongly. Most of the kids in the program will have 2 weeks worth of practices and meets. Those who place in the top 4 of the league will wrestle another week and advance to the Mid-Maryland regional tournament. Coach Munsey and I will do our best to keep the practices fun, so that all of the kids will feel proud to successfully complete a season in the challenging sport that is wrestling.
Practice canceled this Wednesday Feb. 8th at Springbrook HS
Springbrook HS will be the host location of the 3A/4A West Regional Duals this Wednesday, so we will have to cancel practice for Wednesday. Those who normally practice at Springbrook on Wednesday are welcome to attend Tuesday or Thursday practice at Paint Branch.

Week of Jan. 30th news
Past weekend recap
Thanks to all parents and wrestlers for their dedication this past weekend. Wrestling consecutive weekend days is a big commitment, and our wrestlers not only participated willingly, but also with a great deal of enthusiasm. I am extremely pleased with our progress this year as our wrestlers are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last year.
Also, thanks to parents for always letting me know when your son(s) will not be able to attend an event. There has not been a single no show that I have not been informed of in advance and that really reflects well on our program as well as makes it easy to set up the dual meet match ups.
Lastly, it was nice to see some new parents step up to work tables for us in our last weekend's meets. I now feel that we have about 10-12 parents who are ready, willing, and able to work tables for any given meet.
Saturday Feb. 4th high school tri-meet at Paint Branch HS
This Saturday Feb. 4th at 1 pm is the annual consortium tri-meet between Springbrook HS, Blake HS, and Paint Branch HS at Paint Branch. Fortunately, there is no conflict with our Rec League Schedule, so if you are looking for something to do, consider attending this meet. These are the schools that the vast majority of wrestlers from our program feed into, so it is always nice to show our programs support, especially since all teams have big brothers of wrestlers from our program. I believe Craig Buscher and Coach Smith have made arrangements that admission will be free for coaches and wrestlers who are part of the Burtonsville Youth wrestling organization.
Sunday Feb. 5th Dual Meets at Glenwood
You will notice that the Panther's Gold team is scheduled for a double header this Sunday. Since there are 11 teams in the HCW league, a handful of teams were randomly selected for double headers so that there could be 3 dual meets in each time slot for HCW dual meet dates.
I may ask a handful of folks from the Maroon team to participate in the double header in order to complete match ups against the Gold team's opponent in the 9:00 am time slot if the Gold team is not able to match up completely.
Details for Sunday.
Panther's Gold (Please arrive by 8:30 for warm ups):
9:00 - Panther's Gold vs. Warhawks 1 (we are visitors)
11:30 - Panther's Gold vs. Viper's Cassera (we are visitors)
Panther's Maroon (Please arrive by 11:00 for warm ups):
11:30 - Panther's Maroon vs. Viper's Frazier (we are home)
If you are unclear about which team your son is assigned to, please let me know.
Everyone should be home in time for pre-game Super Bowl festivities.
Week of Jan. 23rd news
Saturday January 28th
Round Robin Tournament at Glenwood for all wrestlers in our program. Please see '2011-2012 HCW Schedule' from 'Handouts' menu item for details concerning this event. This tournament runs similar to the MSWA Novice events in that there is a staggered weigh-in and start time depending on the wrestler's age (age is as of January 28, 2012). Last season, the league ran two events in this format, and they ran very smoothly. Most kids will get the opportunity to wrestle 3 matches within a 1.5 hour time frame. There is no additional cost to this event as it is a part of our Howard Rec League schedule. I believe the weigh-in at this event will be used to categorize the wrestlers for the End of Year tournament.
Sunday January 29th - Make up date from canceled Jan. 21st dual meets
The All-star event for Sunday has been canceled and replaced with the dual meets that were canceled from Saturday January 21st. Our league, in my opinion, is one of the more competitive rec leagues, and the folks that run it do everything they can to create as many opportunities for the kids to compete as possible. As I've mentioned in previous postings, I'm not necessarily a big fan of competing consecutive days of the weekend at this level, but we do have an obligation to the league, and I ask that our parents try our best to get our kids to both of these events for this one weekend. (I believe any other weekend where there are events both days have included an optional event for one of the days.)
Jan. 22nd MSWA Novice tournament at Oakland Mills HS recap
It was great to see our program represented by 18 wrestlers at this past Sunday's Novice tournament. I was telling some of the parents at practice tonight how I feel like we're getting to be a program that really shows well...at least at Novice tournaments and that shows our commitment to establishing a successful program. Once again this tournament served as a great opportunity for our kids who are big for their age to face competition of equal age/size/ability, and I think just about every kid in the program has now felt the thrill of victory instead of just the agony of defeat.
Week of Jan. 16th news
Weekend Recap
Emerging Duals - 12 wrestlers represented our club on a team comprised of Burtonsville Rec & Olney Beltway B team members at the Emerging Dual meet tournament at Glenwood on Jan. 15th. This event was a bit overwhelming for some of our wrestlers, but I think many of them realized that they have the ability to wrestle with kids in more advanced leagues and will be joining them sooner than later. I'm not really concerned with team scores in junior league wrestling, but the team we put together placed 4th out of the 6 teams, so we definitely belonged at this event.
Thanks to Grayson Wendel, Jake Redman, Evan Cawthorne, Leo Buscher, Armon Nettey, Zachery Genovez, Ian Cawthorne, Peyton Bell, Sam Redman, Chris Bonhomme, Aaron Genovez, and Eddie Rivera for wrestling their hearts out. Also representing our team were former BWC members Donovan Parris and Aiden Brown.
Bay Bridge MSWA Novice tournament - As far as I know, Jace Munoz was our only wrestler who attended the Bay Bridge novice tournament. As always, Jace wrestled tough as nails and placed 3rd despite giving up size and age as he always does. If you haven't gotten a chance to see Jace, you should, because he's a thrill watch compete.
Weekend of January 21-22nd
Saturday January 21st
Dual Meets at Glenwood
Both teams once again are scheduled to wrestle in the 11:30 time slot.
Please arrive by 11. I know there was a late start the last meet at North Laurel, but let's hope that was a one time occurrence so I'd still like wrestlers there early for warm ups and so that their matches will not be scratched.
Mat 1 - Panther's Gold vs. Viper's Dykstra (we are home)
Mat 2 - Panther's Maroon vs. Viper's Thomas (we are home)
Once again, we will need to supply table workers. Looking ahead on the schedule, there are finally some meets where we are the visitors.
Sunday January 22nd
MSWA Novice Tournament at Oakland Mills HS (optional, but strongly encouraged)
This is another in the series of events geared toward beginning wrestlers. All but a handful of wrestlers in our program are eligible for this tournament. There is an additional cost associated with this tournament, but all of our wrestlers should have their USA card.
If you register online, you can save yourself $7.

Week of Jan. 2nd news
Weekend Recap
Despite the 30-40 minute delayed start for the Panthers Maroon team, the dual meets at the North Laurel Community Center went well. I really appreciate the flexibility and patience of the parents and supporters of our teams. Despite the fact that the dual meets do not always start according to schedule, our parents have handled the chaos in a cool manner. I generally feel that our league is run extremely well, but occasionally there will be delays (caused by injuries, officiating issues, technical issues, etc.) beyond our control.
Eleven wrestlers represented the program and wrestled extremely well at the MSWA Novice tournament at Winters Mill. As I've mentioned before, these tournaments can be hit or miss, but this one was definitely a hit...very organized with true "novice" level competition. These novice tournaments are generally a great opportunity for most of the wrestlers in our program, but are really good for our kids who are big for their age to get to wrestle kids of equal age and ability. Often times in our league, the younger kids who are big for their age can be paired against lighter, older kids, which usually is not an ideal match up.
January 14-15th weekend
This weekend will be a light weekend for our program.
There are no events scheduled for Saturday, and there are only a handful of wrestlers from our program who will be participating in the Emerging Champions Dual meet at Glenwood on Sunday. Just to be open about the process, I nominated 7 wrestlers who I feel are our program's most advanced to be considered for the team that is comprised of the non-Warhawk Howard County Rec teams, and 4 were selected based on season results and weight class need.
If they are healthy and available, the 4 wrestlers who will represent Burtonsville in this event are:
Grayson Wendel - 55
Leo Buscher - 65
Aaron Genovez - 132
Eddie Rivera - 165
In the future, I would like to form our own team for this event, but we are still a little low on numbers to fill a lineup that I think could be competitive.
MSWA Novice Tournament across the Bay Brige - optional
On Sunday January 15th, there is another optional MSWA Novice series tournament at Queen Anne's HS in Centreville, MD (across the Bay Bridge).
The details for this tournament are once again found in the 'Handouts' menu item of our website. Click on the 'MSWA Future Champions Tournament Schedule' Flyer. As of Monday Jan. 9th, I do not plan on attending this tournament, but I'll check to see if any other coaches in our program plan to attend. I am hoping to make the drive to Glenwood to support our kids selected to the Emerging Champions dual meet.
I certainly don't want to deter anyone from attending the Novice tournament, but we have some event filled weekends ahead, so a light weekend may give the kids a chance to rejuvenate for the final stretch of the season.
Week of Jan. 2nd news
Saturday January 7th dual meets at North Laurel Community Center
This Saturday, both of our teams wrestle dual meets at the North Laurel Community Center at 11:30. Please arrive by 11 for warm ups and more importantly to confirm that your son is present so we do not scratch his match.
Both of our teams are home, so we will be responsible for providing table workers. It would really be nice if some new parents could assist with this. The parents who have helped our in the past have done a great job, but it would just be nice to get more folks involved.
Optional tournament Sunday January 8th at Winters Mill HS in Westminster, MD
This Sunday, I (Coach Nogle) am planning to attend the MSWA Novice tournament at Winters Mill HS.
Most of our wrestlers are still considered Novice or Intermediate (those who are not know who they are), so this tournament is a nice opportunity to wrestle some different competition outside of our league.
At this level, I am not a huge advocate of wrestling both days of the weekend (always concerned about burnout), but if your son seems interested, then I don't think it would hurt to give it a shot once in a while. I am going to take Coleman and Carter,
1) because the Warhawks 2 team that Panthers Maroon is wrestling does not have many, if any, guys to match them against, and
2) because their grandparents live in Westminster
Please feel free to email or call if you have any questions.
Week of Dec. 19th news
Practice schedule for the next 3 weeks
Due to the way the holidays fall the next two weeks, we do not have another match until Saturday Jan. 7th, but we will continue practicing.
This week we will follow our normal practice schedule.
The week between Christmas and New Year's, we will only hold practices at our Springbrook location, but all wrestlers in the Rec program are welcome to attend. That week, we will have practice Monday Dec. 26 and Wednesday Dec. 28 from 6:00 - 7:45. I understand if families are out of town, but since we have access to the Springbrook room and since most of the coaching staff are around, we might as well keep our skills sharp.
The first week of the New Year, we will resume practice as usual.
Quick thoughts from the Holiday Tournament
I was extremely pleased with our performance at this past weekend's Holiday tournament. Our wrestlers represented themselves with class and also performed admirably on the mat. This was the first tournament exposure to many in our program, and for the most part everybody picked up on the format rather quickly and our wrestlers reported to their assigned mats on time.
I was especially impressed with our second year wrestlers who are starting to see their hard work pay off this season after experiencing minimal success last season. Our coaches vowed that success can be achieved by any wrestler who works hard and sticks with it, and it is really starting to show. I'm looking forward to the continued improvement.
Week of Dec. 12th news

La Palapa 3 appreciation
Our fundraising effort has started off slowly, but we did get a donation from La Palapa 3, the restaurant near the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and Briggs Chaney Rd. To show our appreciation, I would like to promote their business as a post-tournament dining option. If you do not have any dinner plans and are thinking about dining out this Saturday afternoon/evening, I ask you to consider La Palapa 3. If the kids are wearing their Burtonsville Wrestling apparel, it would be a sign that their donation is appreciated.
Week of Dec. 5th news
Dual meets Dec. 10th at Glenwood Community Center
Opponents
Panthers Maroon vs. Warhawks 3 at 9:00 am (we are home)
Panthers Gold vs. Warhawks 2 at 11:30 am (we are home)
At this stage, everyone should know which team they are on by the color of their shirts, but please confirm on the 'Teams' menu item of the website. Contact Coach Nogle with any issues.
Arrive - 30 minutes prior to scheduled start time. This is important, because if you are not there on time, you risk having your son's match scratched.
Notes from first dual meet
All in all, the first dual meets went well. The first meet is always a bit chaotic as coaches are trying to set up the gym for the first time of the season, but despite the chaos, we were out of the gym by 11:30.
Other points from the meet:
1. Reminder to clip fingernails Friday night before the meet. We had a few kids with long nails, but this was not a big deal.
2. Headgear. Some kids need to take responsibility for their equipment. Coach Munsey and Coach Nogle will address this in practice. The kids also need to make sure their headgear fits securely.
3. All wrestlers with braces must have a mouth piece. We had one wrestler with this issue, but Coach Nogle will take the blame for this because he failed to mention it to the wrestler.
4. Parents in the stands. I know it is difficult to see the mats with the limited bleacher seating, but we still can't have parents behind the benches. The only people permitted on the floor for the Vipers and Warhawks teams must have badges. As of now, this is not required of our coaches, and I would like to keep it this way, but in order to do so we must not ruffle any feathers. Before each meet, Coach Munsey and Coach Nogle will determine who will be on the bench with the team. We will usually have 2 corner coaches, a bench coach to assist with getting on-deck wrestlers ready, and a person to assist with finding kids match ups resulting from no shows.
5. The wrestling - The wrestling went well. Obviously, we have a lot to work, but that will always be the case. The coaches were especially pleased with our 2nd year wrestlers who experienced limited success last year. Even when we came out on the short end, the kids really are starting to grasp the concept so we feel like the success is not far behind.
Week of Nov. 28th news
Dual meet Dec. 3rd, 9:00 am North Laurel Community Center
Arrive - 8:15 (8:00 for wrestlers who missed the previous official weigh-ins)
Opponents
Panthers Maroon vs. Viper's Saylor (we are visitors)
Panthers Gold vs. Viper's Frazier (we are home)
Home team is responsible for providing table workers.
Please let Coach Nogle know if your son is unable to attend as soon as possible.
Weigh-in time and location changed again
The final weigh-in that was scheduled for Tuesday November 29th at Reservoir HS from 6:00-7:00 has been moved to the North Laurel Community Center from 7:00-9:00. The date is still Tuesday November 29th. I apologize for the confusion, but I just received word of the new location/time in a November 25th email.
Again, the Saturday Nov. 26th weigh-in at Glenwood has been canceled. This means that the Nov. 29th weigh-in at Reservoir HS (6:00-7:00) North Laurel Community Center (7:00-9:00) is the last opportunity for Rec wrestlers to weigh-in. If you have to choose between practice and weigh-ins and you did not attend the Nov. 19th weigh-in at North Laurel Community Center, then you should attend the Reservoir North Laurel Community Center weigh-in.
Team assignments and Schedules are now posted
Team assignments are now posted under the ‘Teams’ menu item. This year, we are proudly entering 2 teams (Panthers Maroon and Panthers Gold) into the Howard County Rec league. I tried my best to divide the teams equally based on size and ability. I would not be too concerned about the team assigment. At 7 of the 9 events, both teams are scheduled to wrestle in the same time slot, so largely our organization will be able to stick together.
The HCW Schedule is posted under the ‘Handouts’ menu item. There are additional competition options that I will announce at a later date, but our first commitment is to the dates/events listed on this HCW Schedule.
Monday Nov. 28th practice at Springbrook is canceled
Due to a high school referee’s meeting being held in the wrestling room at Springbrook, we are forced to cancel the Springbrook Rec practice on Monday Nov. 28th. All wrestlers assigned to Springbrook practices are welcome to join the Paint Branch group on Tuesday Nov. 29th. Since many will not be attending practice on Tuesday to attend the North Laurel Community Center weigh-in, lack of space should not be a concern.
Parents meetings
I’m still planning to hold parents meetings and uniform distribution on
Wednesday Nov. 30th at Springbrook, 6:45 pm
Thursday Dec. 1st at Paint Branch, 6:45 pm
Week of Nov. 21st news
Practice will be held this Wednesday as scheduled
Since practice is canceled for Thanksgiving on Thursday Nov. 24th, Rec team wrestlers who normally practice at Paint Branch are welcome to join the Wednesday practice at Springbrook. I suspect that many families will be away for the holiday, so I don’t think lack of space will be a concern.
Important note concerning weigh-ins!
The Saturday Nov.
29th. Since many will not be attending practice on Tuesday to attend the Reservoir HS North Laurel Community Center weigh-in, lack of space should not be a concern.
Parents meetings
Tentatively, I’m planning to hold parents meetings and uniform distribution on
Wednesday Nov. 30th at Springbrook
Thursday Dec. 1st at Paint Branch
Schedule
I have been holding off posting a schedule to the website until I receive something that is considered somewhat final from the Howard County Wrestling Commissioner, but as of now, the first competition will be held on Saturday Dec. 3rd at 9:00 am. These are dual meets that should last roughly 2 hours.
Week of Nov. 14th news
1st practices deemed a success
I don’t think I can express in words my satisfaction in the first practices at Springbrook and Paint Branch. All of our returning wrestlers seem to have picked up right where they left off, and the first year wrestlers really seem to get the idea of what we are trying to accomplish.
It is also great to see all of the help that we have in the room. At the Tuesday PB practice, we had at least 5 assistant coaches helping out Coach Munsey.
Not too late to sign up
Right now, we have about 38 wrestlers signed up for the Rec team. It is not too late to sign up, so please spread the word about our program. It would be ideal to have about 10-12 more kids signed up for the rec program. We will take registrations through the last week of November.
Clinic Program
The Clinic Program will start next Monday Nov. 21st from 6:30-7:30 at Paint Branch HS. We are still hoping for a few more enrollees, but we have secured coaching for this program.
Weigh-ins for Rec teams
One of our obligations to the Howard County League is to complete a weigh-in so that the Commissioner of the league can accurately classify kids (based on age and weight) to a weight class so that match-ups for dual meets and tournaments can be administered easily. The weigh-ins are offered on 3 dates. All kids who participate in the rec league must complete one of these weigh-ins. This year the weigh-ins are scheduled for:
Sat Nov. 19 – North Laurel Community Center (9-11 am) Most convenient for our team
Sat Nov. 26 – Glenwood Community Center (5-7 pm)
Tue Nov. 29 – Reservoir High School (6-7 pm)
See the Calendar on our website for directions to the locations listed above
USAW cards
All wrestlers must have a current USAW card before they can practice.
The USAW card can be purchased online at the 'USAW card link' from the homepage menu. Please print out a copy of the card and bring it to practice.
