Why do you like the game of softball? 

The competition, Getting to play coed with my wife Tina Romero, hanging out with the fellas, getting away from work

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?

My Dad. He would make unbelievable plays at shortstop. Also my uncles: Randy and Robert Romero. Randy was probably the fastest player Ive seen play the game and Robert was hitting em out about 350ft with the old school bombat.

What is your nickname in softball?

Allworld, or J-Ro

Where do you call home?

Denver, CO  (where the cost of living is going up, and the chance of living is going down!)

What do you do for a living?

Deliver construction equipment

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?

Played basketball, football, and baseball in highschool

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?

Started playing with my Dad and uncles in the mid 90’s on Friday nights at “wino park” 23rd & Welton

What position do you play?

Started as a left fielder than got my own team together and didn’t have a pitcher so I started pitching the rest is history.

What batting grip do you use?

Regular grip, sometimes choke up

What ounce bat do you use?

26oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?

Nothing!  If I knew how good I am now(was) I would have put in a lot of hitting into my game.

What is your favorite sports team?

Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees

What is your favorite sport other than softball?

Football. Little league and high school

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?

I wipe off the pitchers mound every time before the inning starts. I smooth out the batters box than take a couple swings. When crossing home plate gotta do something extra.

What is your most memorable softball moment?

Theres 2. Playing in Hispanic Worlds with a team I honestly thought was only going to win 1 game. The only reason I went is because my Big Homie Dino really wanted me to go, so I did and we ended going to Championship game.

The other was The Whole Enchilada. Going 8-0 winning MVP and beating an allstar team put together by Mile High 21-1, and then calling Dino (who was at home) and hearing Helen say Dino was in tears!

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?

First take out the pitching mound. Go back to aluminum bats cause guys will always find a way to shave their bats and not get caught

What is your favorite non-World tournament?

1.)The DINO GARCIA MEMORIAL.  2.)It used to be “Hit the Gap, 9man Tournament” played at Vanderbilt. Only 9 guys on defense-it was a non-sanctioned tourney 3.) Rocky Mtn. Shootout

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?

 

We were playing a ISA tourney in Colo Springs and we had to put Dino in right field and he didn’t want to hustle, so I got on the mound pitched it while he was still goin out to his position the batter hit it over his head, so theres Dino haulin ass to get the ball, he throws it to his cut who then throws the guy out at home plate. Oh Dino was upset with me with that one. (SORRY D, lol)

What is your nickname in softball?  Bus Driver

What do you do for a living? Planner for TerumoBCT

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro? I played Baseball, Football and I wrestled in high school.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?  I married Mr. Big Ten’s daughter and I started from the bottom now I’m here.

What position do you play? 2nd Base

What batting grip do you use? Traditional

What ounce bat do you use? 26-27 oz.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?  Watch Football

What is your favorite sports team?  Boston Red Sox

What is your favorite sport other than softball? Baseball

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?  If I hit well in previous tournament I will get dressed the same way and do everything the same the morning of the next tournament.

What is your most memorable softball moment?  Winning the Whole Enchilada and two other Colorado teams joining us in our team huddle to support Dino who wasn’t able to go with us because he was already sick.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?  I think the upper level in Colorado can improve their support for each other out of state.  It bothers me how much everybody wants other teams to fail when they travel.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?  The Whole Enchilada  

 

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?  All the stuff Jerry Romero does on the field to entertain us.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro? High School Football, Basketball, Baseball. A little College Baseball and Rodeo, Pro Rodeo Bull Rider

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level? Started from the bottom (then I met Lenny Miles and Chewy Vigil who hooked me up with Joey Garcia) now I’m here!

What position do you play? Anywhere but 1st, but mostly infield.

What batting grip do you use?  Normal grip but drop a finger over the knob.

What ounce bat do you use? Same as all the big guys 26oz End load.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season? I didn’t know there was an offseason.

What is your favorite sports team? Broncos!

What is your favorite sport other than softball? Rodeo

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they? Don’t put your hat on the bed and if something is working don’t change it. Stick with the routine!

What is your most memorable softball moment? Winning Offensive MVP at Co-ed Worlds2013.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make? Make teams play up more, no sandbagging.

What is your favorite non-World tournament? Rocky Mountain Shootout, first time I got to see softball at a whole new level.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field? An umpire getting hit in the back of the head from a ball thrown in from centerfield. Dropped him!

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?   My wife made me play coed league. Mercer picked me up from a D team in an open.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?   Lift, hit and run.

What is your most memorable softball moment?   A walk-off inside the ball park homerun to win my first NIT.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?  An orchestrated team snap-off. We reeled in the pop fly, then acted like we were taking a picture with a fish. The team then hung 20 against us in the same inning.

Why do you like the game of softball:  I enjoy the competitiveness and being around all my teammates
 
Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play:  I would say Eric Chavez, I got to play with him for the first couple years I played, he was the most all around player I saw, even speed for a big man!
 
What is your nickname in softball:   The only real nickname has been "Showtime" from Rica..!
 
Where do you call home:  I live in Greeley (not too far from Garden City)
 
What do you do for a living:  I just landed a new gig as a Territory Sales Manager for a company selling tools in the oil field
 
Did you play High School / College / Pro:  I played Football, Basketball, and Baseball in High School, I played College Baseball and played a little of independent ball in Illinois for about 3 weeks. haha
 
How did you get your start in softball in the upper level:  I started playing league at ISLAND GROVE played "E" ball for about 3 weeks, then my boy Raul had Ernie Salazar ask me to play in one tourney for "Frozen Rope" then next weekend I was playing "B" with EAS in Las Vegas.
 
What position do you play:  I started playing 3rd and then moved to 1st.  One day Ill be back at 3rd.
 
What Batting grip do you use:  I use the standard baseball grip although I let my bottom hand pinky over the knob.
 
What ounce bat do you use:  I use a Man's stick 28oz end load
 
What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season:  I usually try to hit as often as possible started to work out a bit more and drop some pounds.
 
What is your favorite sports team:  The St. Louis Cardinals
 
What is your favorite sport other than softball:  I love Baseball and Football
 
Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they:  I have to Match as much as possible, and I like to lay out my uniform the night before a game, I used to be worse in college but I had nothing else to do so I could, now I have grown up stuff going on. haha.
 
What is your most memorable softball moment:  In my first Worlds tourney with EAS, we were in an elimination game we had two outs and a runners on first and second we were down by 2, they had got me to fly out the previous at bat and the pitcher said out loud he wanted to see what I could do. and that "He had this.." 1 pitch and 350' later we walked off that bitch winners!
 
What is the best improvement upper softball could make:  I would say we need to run a pre season "Super Draft" to get more upper and lower players playing in the same tourney together to encourage lower players to start playing up. Don't let the upper level die because people are scared to play up. "DON'T GET BITTER, GET BETTER"
 
What is your favorite non-world tournament:  I love playing in the Danny Juarez Tourney its for such a great cause and it brings a bunch of good friends together to play some ball and have some beers.
 
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field:  Playing in Hispanic worlds we had a few guys who were injured and we were in the championship game. we ended up having the heaviest infield ever assembled: Eric Chavez playing Short, I played 3rd, Cameron Salazar playing first, and Kurly Keintz played 2nd with Barry pitching.. it was pretty interesting and hilarious

Why do you like the game of softball?  It is not frowned upon to be openly competitve, and the teamwork that it takes to achieve goals.... And, where else can a grown man act like a kid again!!!!
