Undefeated Ferguson has the ingredients for success at state
BY JUSTIN AZPIAZU
jazpiazu@MiamiHerald.com

GASTON DE CARDENAS / EL NUEVO HERALD
Ferguson's Maurico Valderruten kicks the ball for a goal behind Sunset's Christian Cruz during a division soccer match against Sunset on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.
With a 12-0 record, the Ferguson boys' soccer team is enjoying one of its best starts in the school's short history. Led by a core of experienced seniors, could 2010 be the year the Falcons win their first state title?
Ferguson coach Jose Aguilar has been on a six-year mission to transform the Falcons into one of the top programs in Miami-Dade county.
``This is the best team the school has ever had,'' Aguilar said. ``It's now or never.''
After an early exit from the playoffs last season, the Falcons lost three seniors, including one starter to graduation. Most of the athletes on the team have playoff experience and have become seasoned players through club play.
The Falcons carry a 27-man roster during the regular season to accommodate players leaving for club responsibilities. Once the playoffs start, Ferguson will cut its roster down to the allowed 22 players.
Ferguson, ranked No. 1 in the ESPN Rise Florida rankings and No. 13 in the ESPN FAB 50, has cruised through District 15-6A, locking-up a spot in the GMAC tournament on Jan. 20.
SOLID PLAY
The Falcons have beat some of the best teams in Miami, including Columbus and Coral Reef. This past week, Ferguson picked up two more district wins, beating Sunset 3-0 on Wednesday and Reagan 1-0 on Friday.
Junior Mauricio Valdurruten led the Falcons by scoring a goal in each of the matches.
Valdurruten, one of the Falcons' best young players, has been offered a scholarship to play for Loyola Marymount University in California.
The Falcons feature a balanced attack that can strike from anywhere. Senior forward Jonathan Bidegain is leading Ferguson with eight goals, and senior stopper Anthony Amaya has been key on defense.
``We are more focused and have more desire,'' Amaya said, about the season. ``Talent can only take us so far, the desire that will take us even farther.''
The Falcons have also benefited from new assistant coach Michael Martin. Martin, a former MLS player, brings a new vision to the team that Aguilar knew was missing.
``You can see the difference when someone plays at a different level,'' Aguilar said.
RIVALRY RENEWED
The Falcons might have the talent to win, but a playoff push means taking on rival Varela.
Last season, the Falcons lost to the Vipers 3-2 in double overtime in a regional quarterfinal match.
Varela has been one of the best teams in Miami-Dade in recent memory winning back-to-back state titles in 2008 and 2007. Ferguson has yet to face the Vipers this year and will most likely play them in the GMAC tournament.
The Falcons have been trying hard to take away Varela's title as the powerhouse of south Miami-Dade, but the Vipers have not given in.
``We should have won that game, but we hit the pole like 10 times,'' Aguilar said. ``It just didn't go our way.''

Ferguson outlasts Varela in much-hyped match

BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ
a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com
Ferguson's boys' soccer team felt all season the only way it could prove its legitimacy was by beating Varela.

Mission accomplished.

The matchup many Miami-Dade County soccer fans eagerly anticipated all season lived up to the hype Thursday afternoon.

Jonathan Lima broke a 1-1 tie before halftime, and the Falcons defense did enough to hold on to a 2-1 victory at home in a Region 4-6A quarterfinal.

The victory snapped Varela's three-year run as Dade's representative at the Class 6A state final four.

The Falcons (20-0), ranked No. 3 nationally in the ESPN RISE Top 50 poll, will host Killian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Ferguson beat Killian 2-1 two weeks ago for the GMAC championship.

The victory was Ferguson's first-ever in the regional playoffs.

``[Varela] has done something special being on top for this long,'' Ferguson coach Jose Aguilar said. ``We talked about reaching the place they are as one of our goals.''

After Gerardo Moya put Ferguson ahead 1-0 early in the game, the Vipers (17-5-1) answered with a goal by Danny Salgado off an assist by Noel Medina.

But the Falcons got Lima's goal quickly before Varela could take the momentum.

Varela had two chances on headers near the goal in the closing minutes, but each attempt missed the mark.

Ferguson Soccer wishes Carlitos Monges a quick recovery and HE SAYS "I'LL BE BACK"!!!!

ANTHONY AMAYA - 1ST ALL STATE PLAYER 2008-2009

• All-State soccer: The Florida Athletic Coaches Association has announced its boys' soccer All-State teams. The Miami-Dade selections for Class 6A are American's Mike Barbeto and Chris Torres, Killian's Stiven Salinas, Varela's Jhonny Vidales, Columbus' Pietro Macchiarella and Ferguson's Anthony Amaya. Belen's Nicolas Roque and Monsignor Pace's Lucas Garcia made it for Class 4A. Gulliver's Camilo Ronderos and Rafael Faria, and Ransom Everglades' Ned De Leo and Mike Lloret were joined by Florida Christian's Andrew Quintana on the Class 3A squad. Miami Country Day's Quinton Watson, Jacky Sasson and Tyrone Serrao joined Dade Christian's Leo Estabridis and Westminster Christian's Jake Moffet and Justin Moo Young made it in Class 2A.

Ferguson wins GMAC title, aims higher

BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ
a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

Most teams undefeated at this juncture of the season often develop kind of an understated swagger.

Not the Ferguson boys' soccer team.

The Falcons still celebrate every victory with exuberance because being the front-runner remains a new experience for them.

Ferguson secured another first Friday night at Ted Hendricks Stadium, rallying to beat Killian 3-1 to win its first GMAC championship.

The Falcons, ranked No. 4 nationally in the ESPN RISE Fab 50 winter rankings, improved to 17-0.

``This means a lot because we had never won this tournament, but it is only the first step,'' Ferguson forward Jonathan Bidegain said. ``This team's growing up a lot this year, and we're moving toward our bigger goals.''

Bidegain spun around a defender and caught up to a ball that was sent toward midfield near Killian's goal. He then ripped a hard shot past Killian's goalkeeper Jack Hubbard that sealed the victory with 1:23 left.

Ferguson played with a man advantage for the entire second half after a Killian player drew a red card shortly before halftime for arguing a call.

The Cougars (14-4-1) scored in the first 15 minutes when forward Nick Figueroa drove in a shot from several yards away.

Ferguson answered later in the half on goals by Rodrigo Koernig and Johnathan Lima. Esteban Castro and Borely Martinez each had assists.

The team's scoring distribution was typical of its offensive production this season.

The Falcons have had 17 players score at least one goal this season.

``These kids work for each other like brothers and all want to be a big part of making history,'' Ferguson coach Michael Martin said.

Before the GMAC tournament, where the Falcons also picked up victories against North Miami Beach and Miami Beach, they had played few teams outside their district. Martin believes the experience will help the team as it gears up for the postseason, which begins Wednesday in the district semifinals.

``Our kids still feel overshadowed because they haven't really won anything yet,'' Martin said. ``Other teams we haven't faced yet, like Varela, have all the hardware, and we feel like we have a good enough team to go out there and make this our year.''

Ferguson ends season as #38 in the nation.

Counting down the winter surprises

Florida is entering the stretch run, California is starting league play and Texas is just beginning. For all intents and purposes, we have reached the middle of the winter high school season. Therefore it's time to take a look at the Top 10 surprises.

Below are 10 teams currently in the FAB 50 that have exceeded preseason prognostications.

10. Castro Valley (Calif.) girls' soccer. Sure Castro Valley was a preseason Top 25 team, therefore its current No. 7 ranking is not a total surprise. However, what is noteworthy is the Trojans' 13-0-1 start that includes 11 matches where they have scored four or more goals.

9. St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) girls' soccer. Is it ever a surprise St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked? Well, maybe so this year. Last year's squad went out of the playoffs in the region final, matching its second shortest postseason run since 1988. The Raiders barely finished in the FAB 50 last year. This year's squad carries a 12-0-2 record into the Nolan Showcase in Texas.

8. West Boca Raton (Fla.) girls' soccer. There's no shortage of quality teams in South Florida, but West Boca wasn't high on that list until its last three games. In between two wins over former FAB 50 Top 10 Boca Raton, West Boca also pinned a loss on perennial state title challenger American Heritage. West Boca is not a complete surprise, despite its 14-0 start since the squad did reach the region semifinals last year.

7. Jesuit (New Orleans, La.) boys' soccer. Last year's ESPN RISE FAB 50 final No. 1 graduated a stellar senior class and lost one of the nation's top juniors when Maryland commit Patrick Mullins opted to skip the high school season to graduate early. Regardless, Jesuit is a perfect 17-0 and riding one of the nation's longest current undefeated streaks.

6. George Jenkins (Lakeland, Fla.) girls' soccer. This former FAB 50 No. 1 program was a big question mark in the preseason. The Eagles returned most of its starters from last year's FAB 50-ranked team. However, superstar Kayla Bala graduated leaving concern about who would provide the offense. Issue resolved. George Jenkins has rolled to a 12-0-1 start and is averaging nearly five goals a match.

5. Ferguson (Miami, Fla.) boys' soccer. In the preseason, Varela (Miami, Fla.) was the clear favorite followed by Killian (Miami, Fla.). Now, entering the stretch run, Ferguson is the undefeated team in Miami's highly competitive Class 6A league.

4. Millennium (Goodyear, Ariz.) boys' soccer. More impressive than the team's 14-0 start is its 2-0 victory over perennial power Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.). That result helps propel this 10-year-old school, which is making its large school debut this year, into the FAB 50 for the first time ever. There were signs Millennium would be good in 2010. After all, last year's team won six of its final eight matches.

3. Tesoro (Las Flores, Calif.) girls' soccer. This girls' soccer team wasn't even ranked among its county's Top 10 teams in the preseason and now the squad is in the FAB 50 Top 25. It should be noted that Tesoro is located in Orange County -- an area with more than its fair share of nationally ranked high school programs. Tesoro earned its lofty ranking with a runner-up finish at the prestigious Excalibur Tournament.

2. California (San Ramon, Calif.) boys' soccer. California enters league play with an undefeated record and a FAB 50 national ranking. That's a far cry from last year's squad that went 5-13-5 and won only one league contest. This team is winning with a balanced scoring attack led by Elliot Anderson.

1. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.) boys' soccer. If Corona del Mar did not get No. 1 on this list for its play, it certainly would get it for the nickname -- the Sea Kings. Under George Larsen, who coached Mission Viejo to a pair of girls' soccer section titles and is a top coach with club power Slammers FC, Corona del Mar has risen from out of nowhere to be a national title contender. The Sea Kings have two victories over Woodbridge, a tournament final victory over Mission Viejo and the crowning moment was a 2-0 victory over former FAB 50 No. 1 El Camino Real (Woodland Hills, Calif.). The team's top scorer is Reed Williams, who has 18 goals in the Sea Kings' 11-0 start.

Boys' Soccer (Winter) FAB 50 Rankings

* Season:
* 2009 |

* 2010

* Week:
* Preseason |

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 is released every Tuesday throughout the winter season.

Upset losses by California programs Chaparral and Santa Ana Valley last week resulted in a slight tweaking of the Top 10, but the chase for No. 1 remains a three-team race.

Jesuit and Plano, league rivals in Texas, hold the top two spots and are coming up on the team's first meeting next week. Meanwhile, Ferguson (Fla.) was dealt a tough opener in the regional quarterfinals as it faces preseason favorite Varela in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

(Rankings are through matches played as of Sunday, Jan. 31)
Week 8
Rank School Record Prev. Rank Notes/Comments
1 Jesuit Prep School (Dallas, TX) 6-0 1 First it was weather, second it was scheduling gaps, but it's all added up to Jesuit playing only six matches in January. Most of the state is well into double-digit contests at this point. Jesuit will pick up the pace this week as the twice-a-week league contests kick in. Santa Clara commit Mark Daus scored twice in the team's 4-0 victory over Highland Park last week, Jesuit's only outing of the week.
2 Plano Senior (Plano, TX) 10-0 2 Plano handled Frisco Centennial 6-1 last week behind a pair of goals by Zach Balthazar. Omar Crewe scored the lone goal in the team's 1-0 win over Plano East.
3 Ferguson (Miami, FL) 19-0 3 Jonathan Lima became the school's leading scorer with his 20th goal of the season during Ferguson's 2-0 district final win over Columbus. Lima has scored twice in five of Ferguson's last seven matches.
4 Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA) 21-0-1 4 Santa Barbara edged Dos Pueblos 2-1 last week to atone for the squad's only blemish -- a draw with Dos Pueblos earlier in the season.
5 Jesuit (New Orleans, LA) 25-0-1 5 Jesuit's undefeated streak stands at a national best 59 matches as it enters the final week of regular-season play.
6 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) 12-1-6 6 Conner Hall and Justin Oloriz netted goals in Mater Dei's 2-0 league win over Orange. The team also played a scoreless draw with St. John Bosco.
7 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) 14-0-2 7 Rancho Bernardo's 1-0 victory over Poway last week marked the team's seventh one-goal win this season.
8 Strake Jesuit College Prep (Houston, TX) 10-0-1 10 Eric Lahart scored a goal in each of Strake Jesuit's wins last week -- a 2-0 decision over Memorial and a 5-0 victory over Northbrook.
9 Corona Del Sol (Tempe, AZ) 19-2-1 11 Corona del Sol closed out regular-season play with six straight shutout victories.
10 Chaparral (Temecula, CA) 18-2-1 8 Chaparral's upset loss was not too damning last week since previous Top 10-ranked Valley also lost, and both teams' positive results kept them among the state's Top 10 teams.
11 Melbourne (Melbourne, FL) 19-1-2 14 Melbourne added a district title to its collection this year, and next up is the region quarterfinals. Melbourne, Sickles and East Lake are the 5A favorites, but Melbourne must reach the state final before seeing either of the other ranked teams.
12 Mansfield (Mansfield, TX) 6-0-1 15 Mansfield's hot start was slowed by a draw last week, but that win over Legacy looms large right now.
13 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) 16-3-2 18 JSerra's 2-1 victory over Servite results in a slight move up in this week's rankings. Juan Gutierrez and Dylan Seedman scored for JSerra.
14 Valley (Santa Ana, CA) 15-2-3 9 Valley sustained a league loss last week, yet remains in first place.
15 Marcus (Flower Mound, TX) 9-1-1 16 Marcus' match with Denton was canceled due to poor weather.
16 Sickles (Tampa, FL) 21-1-3 17 Sickles is one of two Top 25 teams on the top half of the Florida Class 5A playoff draw. There is a chance Sickles could face East Lake in the region final next week.
17 Corona Del Mar (Newport Beach, CA) 16-1-1 19 UCLA commit Reed Williams scored three goals last week as Corona del Mar won all three matches.
18 Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, CA) 14-0-4 20 Bishop O'Dowd likely will not see another FAB 50 opponent this season; therefore, its ranking will be tied heavily to those common opponents that end up in the top tier of the NCS playoffs.
19 Space Coast (Cocoa, FL) 20-2-1 21 Although Space Coast is the lone FAB 50 team in the Class 4A playoffs, it is not a clear favorite. Serious title contenders include Tampa Jesuit, J.W. Mitchell and always-tough Jansen Beach.
20 Millenium (Goodyear, AZ) 21-1 22 Millennium wrapped up regular-season play with a seven-match win streak.
21 Alisal (Salinas, CA) 10-1-5 23 Alisal has been winning despite allowing goals. In fact, the team has given up two or more scores in five matches this year.
22 Boyd (McKinney, TX) 7-0-2 25 Junior Taylor Simmank's goal carried Boyd to a 1-0 victory over Wylie last week.
23 Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, FL) 21-1-2 24 Bishop Verot and Berkeley Prep could clash for the region title next Friday. Both programs are expected to get through the first two rounds to set up this intriguing match-up.
24 Klein (Klein, TX) 7-0-4 13 Klein fell several spots following a tie with unranked Tomball. While Klein remained undefeated, the mounting number of ties was cause for a downward move in the rankings.
25 East Lake (Tarpon Springs, FL) 17-1-2 26 East Lake started region quarterfinal action Tuesday against Pinellas Park. A first-round win likely will set a rematch with Seminole.
26 North Broward Prep School (Coconut Creek, FL) 17-2-3 27
27 Golden Valley (Bakersfield, CA) 22-0-1 30
28 Captain Shreve (Shreveport, LA) 22-1-2 28
