Subscribe to our NewsletterEqual Playing Time Rule Reminder - Updated
Coaches,
Below is a recap of our Equal Playing Time Rule. The playoffs are right around the corner and we’d like to remind all coaches of the Equal Playing Time Rule.
As per the rules of our North Haledon / Hawthorne Recreation Basketball League:
Each player must have equal playing time. No one player should be playing the whole half or game, even if you only have 6-9 players. This is REC, and we want each player to have the opportunity to play in pressure situations.
There will be people monitoring the remainder of the games to help coaches understand this rule.
We understand how easy it is to get caught up in a game and forget to make substitutions, which is why we started the 5 minute substitution rule. This rule is to remind coaches to make substitutions. Please make it a priority to give all your players EQUAL playing time.
This does not mean every player has to play at least 50% and some players can play the whole game.
It means that every player should play an EQUAL amount of time.
If you have 10 players, every player would play 20 minutes.
Unless you have only 5 players, every player should sit the bench an equal amount of time.
We do not want any team to be forced to sit a player because a coach did not understand the rule.
If you have any questions at all about this or any rule, please ask them now.
Please use the final week and a half of games to make sure you understand and follow this rule.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Reporting of Game Scores
Coaches,
Every coach is responsible for reporting their game score. I would rather have two scores reported than zero. We are missing 13 different game scores. Please check your team's schedule on this website and if you are missing a game score, please shoot me an email with the score. If you are unsure of the actual score, just give me the winner and we'll list it as 1-0 game. All that matters is the winner, not the actual score.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Scott
NH Clinic Basketball Program
Our Clinic Basketball Program is scheduled to start Saturday, January 10.
Here is the schedule:
Boys @ North Haledon, Memorial School
9:00AM – 10:00AM – Kindergarten
10:00AM – 11:00AM – 1st grade
11:00AM – 12:30PM – 2nd Grade
Girls @ North Haledon, High Mountain School
9:00AM – 10:30AM – Kindergarten, 1st Grade & 2nd Grade
Due to the limited number of girls registered, we will combine the girls 3 grades together. If registration increases we will consider splitting up the grades.
Our Clinic Program stresses learning the basics of basketball, dribbling, passing, shooting and defense, The goal is to teach the children these basics in a fun, competitive way so they have fun doing drills. The coaches are always coming up with new "drills/competitions" to teach the children the basics. Once they begin to learn the basics, they will begin using those skills in "games".
If you'd like to get involved in the program, please contact Joe Lozito (joelozito@aol.com).
3rd & 4th Grade Division rules to begin being enforced
Attention everyone in the 3rd & 4th Grade Division:
Beginning Tuesday, February 3, the referees will begin enforcing the rules in the 3rd & 4th grade division. What this means is that when your player creates a turnover by traveling or double dribbling, etc., the ball will be awarded to the other team. We've spent half the season instructing the players of the rules, now we will begin enforcing them.
Please tell all your players of the rule enforcement.
Clinic Basketball Last Day
This coming Saturday, March 7 will be the last day for the Clinic Basketball Program.
We'd like to thank all the coaches that have jumped in and helped run the program. Without our volunteer coaches, there would be NO basketball program. Parents, please take a minute and thank your child's coach. They put in many hours teaching your child the basics of basketball and more importantly sportsmanship and teamwork.
THANK YOU Coaches!!!

2010 - 2011 North Haledon / Midland Park Recreation Basketball Association Rules
Click on the Handouts tab on the Main Menu. Then click on 2010 – 2011
Basketball Rules to download.
Coaches, please download and print out a copy of the rules. These are the updated rules. We added the Overtime format discussed at the Coached Meeting on Saturday, January 8.
Overtime format (for the 5/6 and 7/8 divisions):
For games ending regulation time in a TIE there will be One (1) Four (4) minute overtime period. Each team wi1l have one (1) 30 second time out. If game remains tie at the end of overtime, the game is offically a tie. ONLY one overtime period will be played.
Only One Week Left
Attention Coaches and parents:
There is only one week of games left before the playoffs. A quick reminder, this is a RECREATIONAL Basketball League and is designed for children of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the sport of basketball. There are plenty of travel, CYO and AAU teams available for the more competitive spirit. Our goal is to give every child that wants to play basketball a chance to be part of a team, have an equal chance to play and to learn the many benefits sports provide.
We’d like to make a suggestion to all coaches, parents and players. Remember everyone (the coaches, players, referees and score keeper) involved in a basketball game is giving their best effort. If you see something happen that you do not agree with, please think before you act. You never know who is in the stands. Coaches, if you disagree with a referee’s call, please do not yell from the sidelines. This will NEVER help your team. Instead, call a time out and respectfully approach the referee, calmly state your case and politely ask for an explanation of the call. You will get better results and the referee will normally listen. If you are continuously yelling from the sideline, you are calling out that person and people do not like to be embarrassed in front of their peers. We have instructed the referees to follow the rules of our league and give coaches that berate them a technical foul. If the berating continues a second technical will be issued and you will have to leave the building. If a coach is kicked out of a game, he/she is suspended from the next game and is required to meet with their town’s commissioner to discuss the situation. Parents are subject to the same ejection from the gym.
PLEASE remember as a coach, you are representing your team, your players and your town. Your children are watching the way you handle adversity. Think before you act.
Overall this has been a very exciting season with many exciting, close games and we look forward to a great finish. Every coach and board member is volunteering their time and doing everything they can to make this and every season successful. Thanks should go out to all of them. And lastly, if you have ideas on how to improve any program, you should get involved. We can always use more volunteers. The more people that get involved, the better program our children will enjoy.

Breaking News
Since The Hawthorne Press published this information last week, we might as well post the facts here.
North Haledon and the Hawthorne Boys & Girls Club are working out the details to form a NEW REC Basketball league for this coming basketball season. Everything looks great. The rules and ideals of both programs are nearly identical. We are discussing any minor differences and we will make the necessary changes to move forward with this exciting new opportunity.
Hawthorne is not only closer geographically, but they also have 2 gyms available for games, which hopefully will give us a little more flexibility with our scheduling. We are excited about the opportunities this league will offer to our basketball programs.
As more information becomes available, it will be posted here.
Midland Park and North Haledon have mutually agreed to move in different directions.
Clinic Basketball Program (grades K -2) - UPDATED
North Haledon Clinic Basketball Program - UPDATED
Kindergarten – 2nd grade (Sorry no Pre-K)
Notes on the Clinic Program:
- Start: early January, on Saturday mornings
- End: Early March
- Time: 9:00AM, 10:00AM & 11:00AM depending on grade (exact time to be determined)
- Place: Memorial & High Mountain School gyms
- Who: All NH residents grades Kindergarten - 2nd grade
- Boys & girls are seperated
The season will end with a donut / pizza party with scrimmages beforehand.
This is a clinic program, where we teach the children the skills that they will need to move up and play in the Rec program and competitive games. The second graders will scrimmage with each other during the season, as will the younger grades as soon as the coaches feel they are ready, so they get to run up and down the court and get the feel of a real game.
The parents are the ones that run the program, with help from a leader who helps coordinate the drills, so please feel free to volunteer. You will need to be certified. If you are not already, we can arrange a training session for this. Once you are certified, you are good to coach any sport in North Haledon under our insurance umbrella.
Remember to always check this website for updated information.

Memorial School Not Available Fri, Dec 7
Coaches,
It appears there a miscommunication and Memorial School is NOT available on Friday, December 7. The Hawthorne Boys & Girls Club requested and was approved to use the gym months ago for their monthly "Famly Fun Night" event. For whatever reason, when we requested to use it, there was a misunderstanding and Memorial School was given to us to use.
Thank you for your understanding.
NH Basketball
Practice Schedule Week of Dec 17
This Week's Practice Schedule will available today.
Please keep in mind, there is a half day on Friday, Dec 21 which is the beginning of the Christmas Break. When there is a half day or school is closed we do not have access to the gyms. The schools will re-open on Tuesday, Jan 2, 2013. We will have that week for practices and games will start the following week.Due to a Holiday Concert at Memorial School on Monday, Dec 17 the gym is not available for the girls travel teams, so their games have been rescheduled and will take away some practice slots.
I will do everything I can to get every team a practice this week, but it will be interesting.
Memorial School Gym open for practice tonight, 12/17/12
Coaches,
I was just informed that Memorial School is now available to use tonight. There are 3 slots open at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00pm which are now available on a first come, first serve basis. If you would like to grab one of the slots, please email me (yosh00@aol.om) and if it is still available, I will send an email confirmation. Please do not just show up assuming the gym is open.
**** Updated 2:40PM
The 8:00PM slot at Memorial has been taken, but the 8:00PM slot at High Mountain is now open.
New Practice Schedule Uploaded
The practice schedule for this coming week, December 31, 2012 has been updated.
Due to the short week, each team was given one practice slot. Any extra slots were given with the undertsanding that if enough requests were made we would double up the teams in the gym. Please consider splitting the gym with another team in in your division. You can practice for half the time and scrimmage for the other half.
The game schedule is being worked on with games to begin the week of January 7th. It will be emailed and posted as soon as it is completed.

NH Clinic Basketball Program Basics - UPDATED *****
North Haledon Clinic Basketball Program
Kindergarten – 2nd grade
Clinic Program begins January 12, 2013 and runs until March 9 on Saturday mornings.
Here is this year’s schedule:
Boys Kindergarten – 9:00AM – 10:00AM at Memorial School
Boys 1st Grade – 10:00AM – 11:00AM at Memorial School
Boys 2nd Grade – 11:00 – 12:30PM at Memorial School
Due to a previously unnoticed scheduling conflict, we need to change the time of the GIRLS CLINIC. It remains on Saturdays, but will change to 10:00AM - 11:30AM. Please note the change.
(Old schedule - Girls Kindergarten – 2nd grade – 9:00AM – 10:30 AM at High Mountain School)
This year the number of girls registered is the lowest they’ve been on a long time. Due to the low numbers we will combine all girls grades together, until we get increased numbers. We believe part of the problem was the way the girls Clinic was run last year at Midland Park. We have addressed that issue and have made 2 changes. 1). We will run both our Clinic Programs (girls and boys) ourselves. We are putting people in place to make this year a more organized and FUN program for all the children. 2). We are no longer in a league with Midland Park. We have joined with Hawthorne this year and are looking forward to working with them to build a Rec basketball league that will help our children get the most of their basketball experience. We are encouraged with our meetings with Hawthorne and are happy to say we are all on the same page in that we believe our league should encourage good sportsmanship and that the children have fun above all else. Winning will take care of itself, but it is not first and foremost. Our travel program, which starts at grade 5 for girls and boys, is for the more competitive athlete, where winning and competition become a higher priorities.
This is a clinic program, where we teach the children the skills that they will need to move up and play in the Rec program and competitive games. The second graders will scrimmage with each other during the season, as will the younger grades as soon as the coaches feel they are ready. They will get the chance to run up and down the court to get the feel of a real game. There are no formal teams in the Clinic program. All the participants will be taught the basics, how to dribble, how to pass, how to catch, how to shoot and the basics of defense.
The parents are the ones that run the program, with help from a leader who helps coordinate the drills, so please get involved. Our children grow up so fast, and this represents a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your child and their friends. You will need to be certified. If you are not already, we can arrange a training session for this. Once you are certified, you are good to coach any sport in North Haledon under our insurance umbrella.
We are keeping the registration open for the Clinic Program through January. So please spread the word that we have addressed any issues from last year and will keep improving the program so our children will have the benefit of physical activities while enjoying the sport of basketball.
This year we have 2 new Co-Directors of basketball:
Joe Lozito – joelozito@aol.com
Mike Kurzynski – hitide12@aol.com
Feel free to reach out to them with any questions or concerns.

NH Rec Annual Fund Raiser - UPDATE
The North Haledon Recreation Commission holds ONLY ONE annual fund raising event. For the past 15 years it has been a Beef Steak Dinner Dance held at The Brownstone toward the end of January. This year in an attempt to get some of our newer parents involved we are trying something new, a “Night at the Race”.
This year’s date is Friday, January 24, 2014. Our sports programs are self-funded by our relatively low registration fees and our one, SINGLE fund raiser. We need your support to keep our sports programs going for our children. Our sports programs are run by volunteers in our community that freely give their time to keep our programs as one of the best in the area.
Please mark your calendar now for FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2014. Tickets $65.
We do not have separate fund raiser for each sport. NO candy, candles, wrapping paper, etc. to sell, just our one annual dinner dance.
Everyone needs a night out. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Help us help your children. Purchase a pair of tickets, better yet grab a few friend and buy a table, come out, enjoy a night out and support our sports programs at the same time.
Tickets are now available - email Scott at yosh00@aol.com for your tickets.
Coaches NEEDED so we can hold Draft and pick practice days
People have been asking:
1.) What day will my child's team practices be?
The day a team practices depends on what day the head coach of that team can practice. There are no specific days for any particular division. Get involved and you can have a say on when your team practices.
2.) When will the draft take place?
We cannot hold the draft until we have coaches. Coaches are needed at ALL Levels.
Girls | Boys | |||||
Division | # of Girls | # of Teams | Coaches | # of Boys | # of Teams | Coaches |
3 & 4 Grade | 18 | 2 | 1 | 30 | 3 | 2 |
5 & 6 Grade | 20 | 2 | 0 | 43 | 4 | 1 |
7 & 8 Grade | 31 | 3 | 2 | 43 | 5 | 3 |
The above table shows the amount of children registered at each division, the approximate number of teams at each division and the number of Head Coaches we have for each division. As you can see we are short Head Coaches at every level. We cannot have a program without coaches. An email was sent out Monday requesting parents step up and coach. We are still short coaches. Until we have coaches, we cannot move forward with the draft nor the program.

RUTGERS Safety Class
Parents,
We are always looking for volunteers to keep our programs going. For the safety of our children, all coaches are required to have taken the RUTGERS Safety class. We will be holding this class on Wednesday, December 18 from 6-9 at the Rec office. This course is mandatory to coach any sport in our program. Head coaches please inform any of your assistant coaches that have not yet been certified. The cost is $15 by check to North Haledon Rec or if you are paying by cash, please have exact change. So I can give Ed Furst a head count please let me know if you will be attending.
Please let Joe Lozito (joelozito@aol.com) know if you will be attending the class.
Basketball practice CANCELED today, Tues, Dec 17
Due to the weather, basketball practice and all after school activities have been canceled today, Tuesday, December 17.
William Paterson Women's Basketball
William Paterson University’s women’s basketball coach just emailed an invitation to our program. The WPU women’s team is playing Manhattanville tomorrow, 12/19, night at 7:00PM. She has offered FREE admission to the game.
WPU is a local university that has had a very successful program over the past few years. I’ve been to a few games and have not been disappointed. They have been very exciting and a great opportunity to show your team/child a local team perform at a higher level.

Clinic Basketball Meeting
Greetings Clinic Parents,
Happy New Year. First I would like to thank all of you for volunteering your valuable time to help coach the youth in our basketball program. Hopefully you will have a long coaching career in our rec program because when you stop coaching you will miss it as I do. I would like to meet with everyone interested in the Clinic Program Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 7:30 PM in the Rec Office. I have an 8:00 PM meeting with the Board of Recreation so I would appreciate it if you can be prompt. I just want to go over a few things so we should not be long.
Thanks,
Joe Lozito
Co-Director, NH Basketball
High School Basketball Division
Now that the Rec Basketball Program is under way and the Clinic is set to start Saturday, January 11, we need to get moving with the High School Basketball Division.
The idea behind this division is to give our youth, that did not make their respective high school team, the opportunity to continue to enjoy the sport of basketball. If you are of high school age AND not on any high school basketball team please register using the Online Registration Form. Please register this week.
IF we see that there is enough interest, we will put together the division, move forward, and then determine the fees, etc. (Hawthorne likes the idea and Midland Park has expressed interest as well).
If you want this to happen, you have to spread the word. We need numbers before we can move forward with this. As they say, "the ball is now in your court."

Mandatory Coaches Meeting
There will be a MANDATORY Coaches meeting, Saturday January 9 at 3:00 PM in the Memorial School Gym, to go over all of the Rules/Conduct/Schedule with the Midland Park Coaches, so please make plans to attend. Right after the meeting we will hand out uniforms, so plan on staying at least one hour.
The game schedule will be sent out early next week. As soon as we think it is final. THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULE THIS YEAR, UNLESS IT IS A DIRE SITUATION. So if you CANNOT make a game / not enough players - YOU WILL FORFEIT THE GAME AND THE TEAMS WILL BE ALLOWED TO USE THE TIME TO PRACTICE.

Getting ready for the 2010 - 2011 Season
Attention Girls - If you are interested in playing at the travel level please contact Scott Wozney at yosh00@aol.com. We are attempting to determine the amount of interest at each level so we can recruit coaches and register in the appropriate league. Levels available MAY BE 3/4th grade, 5/6th grade and 7/8th grade. If there is not enough interest to create a team solely of NH players, we MAY have the option to combine with Midland Park to form teams at these levels.
I understand soccer isn’t over yet and it hard to think about basketball already, but please put some thought into it and let me know if you are interested.
Also, Erin Monahan, Head Basketball coach for the women at William Paterson University is hosting a 2 day mini-camp during teacher’s convention weekend, November 4 & 5. For details and registration form, click on Hand Outs in the menu and download the WPU Mini Camp. It is available for boys & girls any age, K-12. Cost $60.

Clinic Program Info
Kindergarten – 2nd grade
Program begins January 8, 2011 and runs into March on Saturday mornings. The times we try to adhere to are:
Kindergarten – 9:00 – 10:00 AM
First Grade – 10:00 – 11:00 AM
Second Grade – 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
These times can change if there is a large group that has a church or school function at that time. We have a last day donut / pizza party with scrimmages beforehand and all players get a medal and citation.
We merged the program with Midland Park a few years ago. So this year the girls will play on Memorial School and the boys will play in the Highland School gym (Midland Park).
This is a clinic program, where we teach the children the skills that they will need to move up and play in the Rec program and competitive games. The second graders will scrimmage with each other during the season. And so will the younger grades as soon as the coaches feel they are ready, so they get to run up and down the court and get the feel of a real game.

Game Scores
Coaches,
Reminder:
Now that the games have begun, please remember, in order for this website to show accurate information, the winning coach is responsible to email their game results to Scott (yosh00@aol.com).
Please put the email in the following format:
Subject: Games Scores
Game Date: 01/10/11
Teams: 56B2 vs 56B8
Winner: 56B2
Score: 24-25
The posted scores will at times be "adjusted" so as not to embarrass any team. Everyone knows a lopsided score benefits neither team, so if I feel a score is one-sided I may adjust the reported score or list it as a 1-0 score.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,
Scott

North Haledon REC Basketball Uniforms
Please know we are aware of the shortage of basketball uniforms and new uniforms have been ordered. We expect delivery of shorts this week and the jerseys next week, the jerseys are custom printed. The weather may affect delivery time. If your child did not receive a full uniform, please be patient, they will receive one ASAP.
The temporary shortage of uniforms has 2 causes, one an increase of players this year and the other is because not everyone returned uniforms last season. Please remember the basketball uniforms are to be returned after each season.
New uniforms have arrived, if your NH REC team does not have enough uniforms, please contact Mike Oliver or Scott to arrange a time to pick up more.
February 2 - Games Postponed

ALL REC BASKETBALL GAMES ARE POSTONED AGAIN TONIGHT, FEBRUARY 2, 2011.
(For travel games, please contact your coach)
Coaches, please coordinate with your opposing coach to find a new date to play the game. We do have open time slots available, but with all the snow they are going fast. Please work on getting your games rescheduled by the end of the week.
Thank you,

National Girls and Women is Sport Day - February 9, 2011
Attention Basketball Enthusiasts:
William Paterson’s Women’s Basketball Coach Erin Monahan has invited us to attend “National Girls and Women in Sports Day”, Wednesday, February 09, 2011. The Lady Pioneers, are ranked 23rd nationally and are hosting NJCU at 6:00PM. Before the game WPU’s female president will be speaking at 4:15PM about how she made it to where she is. The girls that attend the president’s chat will receive a free t-shirt and will be asked to attend a little reception before the game.
WPU is quietly playing some impressive basketball right over the hill. Many of us cut through their campus on the way into Wayne. Why not stop in and support some of the better collegiate players right next door.
Let’s all support our local university and watched some great basketball.

Grade 3 - 8 Draft
Coaches, first I would like to wish everyone and their family a SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!
We are going to have our grade 3-8 draft on this Saturday as follows at the rec building, so please make yourself available if you are a head/assistant coach:
Girls grades 3-8 at 9:00am to 10:30am
Boys grades 3-8 at 10:30am to 12noon
Clinic Basketball - Kindergarten - 2nd Grade
Memorial Gym NH-All Boys Clinic Program
9am-K grade boys
10am-1st grade boys
11am-2nd grade boys
Highland Gym-Midland Park-All Girls Clinic Program- (gym is located at the corner of Prospect, Highland and Godwin Aves, on Highland Ave-across from the Police Department)
9am-K grade girls
10am-1st grade girls
11am-2nd grade girls
We need parents to help run this, so please volunteer if you have a child in the clinic program when you bring your child to the gym. The clinic is run by parents (we try to have at least one parent who is in charge of the whole group and directs the other parents) who teach the children the basics of basketball, and as they progress we have them scrimmage each other so they know what it is like to play a game. Obviously, the older the group the better they are at grasping the rules etc., so they scrimmage more as the weeks go on. There are no "teams" and they do not play a schedule of games like our 3-8th grade program, and we merge all children with Midland Park so we utilize the gyms better. This means that some of the NH children will be playing in MP, and some of the MP children will be playing in NH, which is just like it is when they get older. We end the year with a pizza/donut party and give out certificates and medals to all who are in the program. If you have any questions, please email me anything and i will try to get back to you in a prompt manner.
Thanks,
Mike Oliver
North Haledon Basketball Commissioner

Fees - Updated 2012
Updated
We have not raised our registration fees in over 7 years. We understand today's financial situation and are doing our best to keep our program affordable for our children. We want the children to be able to enjoy the sport of basketball.
These are 2 good questions:
1 - Why are the fees so “high”?
2 - Why are the fees different for Clinic and grades 3-8?
These are good questions and here are the explanations:
First, we are doing all we can to keep the registration fees as low as possible. We have not raised the registration fees: Clinic - $50 and upper levels $75.00, for a few years now.
We have compared our fees to other local communities and have found that we are the lowest or near the lowest in our surroundng area.
A few years back, due to the comments of many parents, we did away with all fund raisers. The only one we have for the entire sports program is the annual beef steak usually at the end of January. When we did away with the fund raising for each sport, it was agreed that the registration fee would have to be increased to make up for the lost revenue. Most parents were in agreement with that.
Next, why clinic and the upper levels have different costs?
The Clinic division has no referees and only takes place one day a week.
Grades 3-8 play games, usually 10-15, which require 1-2 referees depending on the level. Also these upper levels will have a playoff tournament, all teams make the playoffs. This means each team will play at least one more game. The first and second place team members, at each division, receive a trophy.
Also we sponsor a “Skills Competition”, free throw and 3-point shooting competition for each division (3/4 grade, 5/6 grade, 7/8 grade) before the championship game and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each skill get a trophy.
The Clinic divisions get to keep their “uniforms”, a T-Shirt, and then enjoy a “pizza party” at the conclusion of the season.
