LEGION BASEBALL: Breaks go against Roslyn as Blue Hawks' season ends
LANGHORNE >> There are some days where the only option is a tip of the cap to the other dugout.
Roslyn went into Tuesday afternoon’s game against Downingtown Post 475 knowing a win would advance it to the Region 3 tournament’s final day. But things didn’t got the Blue Hawks’ way. It seemed every bad break they could catch, they did.
A tough first inning was too much to overcome as the Lower Montco Legion champs saw their season end in a 9-3 loss to the Diamond Dogs at Cairn University.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Downingtown, they’re outstanding,” Roslyn assistant coach Mark Troyer said. “I knew we would have to bring our A-game in here to have a chance to win. It’s a team that can hit well and field well, but a line-drive double play, a ball finds the bump in the field and goes out in the outfield. We didn’t seem to get a lot of breaks out there.”
The game, which was scheduled for 4 p.m., began roughly an hour ahead of schedule. Downingtown led off in the top of the first and built a four-run advantage that would be enough for the rest of the game. Post 475 only needed one hit to cause the damage, using two walks and an error to get the first three batters aboard.
Roslyn reliever Brian Close, who finished up Monday’s win, had to come in with two outs in the first. After Close got out of it, the Blue Hawks looked on their way to starting something in the bottom of the frame with two one-out hits, but Brendan Gallagher was thrown out stealing and third baseman Nick Bein grounded to short to end the threat.
Danny Janosen (3-for-4) drove in a run in the bottom of the third, but it only restored the deficit to four runs after Downingtown had tacked on another score in the top half of the frame. Gallagher followed by scorching a ball back at Dogs starter Jeff Armstrong, who somehow managed to knock the ball down, scoop it and toss to first to beat Gallagher for the third out.
“It was rough,” Roslyn right fielder Brett Guaglionona said. “Four runs in the first inning doesn’t help any baseball team whether you’re Little League or pro.”
Downingtown scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, then dropped a two-spot in the sixth on three hits and an error. Roslyn meanwhile, had scored in the third, but stranded a runner in the other three innings and Guaglionona said the Dogs’ two-run inning was where the game started to get away from them.

“It doesn’t happen often but when it does, it’s tough,” Yerkes said. “We tried to work harder, tried to push through it but unfortunately we weren’t able too today.”
Janosen provided his team’s other RBI in the bottom of the seventh but even then, it came after a crushing play. Matt Close, Andy Ennis and Josh Persing had loaded the bases on two walks and a single, turning the lineup over for Guaglionona. The rising freshman at Penn State Abington smoked one down the line, only for Downingtown’s third baseman to snare it out of the air, then step on the base to force out Close for a double play.
Janosen followed that with his third hit of the day to score Ennis, who ran hard off second. It was a good day for Janosen, who made a couple of nice defensive plays and threw two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.
“We just couldn’t get anything,” Guaglionona said. “We’d get a baserunner and it would just end from there. We couldn’t gather runners and runs like we usually do. During the regular season we could always gather runs together, three, four runs in an inning. We just couldn’t do that today.”
Roslyn held Downingtown off the board in the final three innings, but it was too much for the Blue Hawks to try and overcome at that point.
“That’s just how baseball is,” Guaglionona said. “You have your good days and your bad days. Today just wasn’t our day.”
The loss ended a historic season for Roslyn, which won its first LML title since 1990. Composed of mostly Abington players who had snapped the school’s long district playoff drought, it was in many ways the continuation for a group that’s been playing the game together for a long time.
The team loses a core group of players next year, but isn’t devoid of talent. Pitcher Greg Troyer, a rising senior at Abington, lines up as an ace while Yerkes is also going into his senior year. With the two streak-snapping runs, it also sets a new standard that regional tournament appearances should be an expectation.
“It’s sad to lose a lot of the great players we’ve had,” Yerkes said. “But I think allows the guys to step up next year. I have confidence in them, I think we’ll be OK.”
It’s also the end of an era for a group that’s accomplished quite a lot in the last few weeks. Continued...
