BASKETBALL HQ KYLE OHMAN WRITES ARTICLE FOR OXFORD HOOPS YOUTH PLAYERS

Youth Basketball Dribbling Drills

by Kyle Ohman

BasketballHQ.com

If you have ever been to a youth basketball game you will see almost every player dribbling with their head down, dribbling with only their dominant hand, and even some double dribbling. At an early age all of this is usually overlooked, but it is also a key time of growth that these younger players could be taking advantage of.

The reason that it is overlooked is because it is looked at as a time for the players to enjoy the game of basketball and I completely agree with that. However you can also mix in some really good drills that younger kids will enjoy and make them better players. Don’t stunt the growth of a young player’s skill development.

As a player gets older and begins to face better competition they will not be able practice these same bad habits. That is why it is important to be able to start to work with them on some beginner drills that will make them better players but will also be fun and keep them interested.

You want to pick basketball dribbling drills that are going to make them better players but not be too hard and discourage them from wanting to play, it is a delicate balance. Here three different types of drills that you can use to help your player work on their ball handling.

Tennis Ball Basketball Dribbling Drills

Most younger players are not able to dribble with their eyes up. Tennis ball drills will fix that problem because tossing and catching the tennis ball forces the player to keep their eyes up the whole time. These drills may be a little bit more difficult at first but once the player does them a few times they will start to get the hang of it.

Also these drills are great for building hand eye coordination and helping the player to focus on other things besides dribbling the basketball. In a game the player must be able to keep their eyes up and focus on the defense and the other offensive players. With these drills the basketball will become an extension of the hand.

One Ball Basketball Dribbling Drills

It is important to continue to work on moving the basketball from hand to hand and to develop the timing of your moves. Getting past a defender is all about changing speeds and being deceptive in which direction you are actually going to go. One ball dribbling drills will help you work on moving the ball from hand to hand and getting that rhythm and feel for setting up your moves.

Two Ball Basketball Dribbling Drills

By dribbling two basketballs at the same time you immediately remove the crutch from the player of dominating the ball with only their strong hand. When young players get nervous they immediately transfer the basketball to their dominant hand and that is not good. Using two basketballs at the same time will eliminate the opportunity to only dribble with the strong hand.

Along with eliminating the dominate hand you are maximizing your time by dribbling with two basketballs at the sametime. You are developing both hands in half the time because you are able to work on both equally and at the same time.

Conclusion

Youth aged basketball players are capable of starting to work on their game and develop as players. It is up to you as a parent or coach though to help them and give them the right basketball drills and tools that they need to get better.

OXFORD HOOPS TORNADOES MAKES IT 4th STRAIGHT

Saturday 21st April, St Gregory the Great School

5 TEAMS TOOK PART IN THE PLAY-OFFS AND ROAD TO THE FINALS
Didcot Devils, Faringdon Falcons and Oxford HOOPS Pumas were competing to see who was going to play against Witney Magic and Oxford HOOPS Tornadoes.

Witney Faced Oxford Pumas, who gave it their all, but were just not strong enough to make it to the finals. Witney looked sharp and ready to take it all.

HOOPS Tornadoes faced Faringdon Falcons, who crumbled under the constant pressure of last year's champs and we had what we all wanted to see ... Witney Magic v Oxford HOOPS TORNADOES finals.

It was a great game, with HOOPS taking an early lead, but Witney always stayed within reach, this was the same during the whole contest, with 1 minute left on the clock Tornadoes were up by 10 points, but after 2 turnovers and a missed shot, Witney reduced the lead to 6 points and HOOPS TORNADOES became CHAMPIONS for the 4th Consecutive Year!

Thanks to Zack Meekings for organising the League and ensuring that games took place as well as refereeing. Thanks to Peter Egawhary (HOOPS Chairman) for helping ref the games and doing the finals scoring. Thanks to all the parents for supporting the sport and their children. Thanks to the Coaches for their time and effort, without them there would be no teams. Thanks to the players for making the sport what it is, the best in the world!

MEDALS WILL BE PRESENTED NEXT SATURDAY 28th APRIL AT 1 PM OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY CENTRE FOR SPORTS DURING THE OXFORD LEAGUE FINALS WHERE OXFORD HOOPS HAS PHOENIX REPRESENTING THE WOMEN AND SONICS REPRESENTING THE MEN.

HOOPS DOMINATE U16 CVL FINALS

Oxford HOOPS Take the U16 CVL Finals with ease after defeating Witney 40-20 and then Faringdon 42-19 to become CHAMPIONS once again.

Coach Mark Blencowe was luckily assisted by Sam Blencowe on the day as during one of the games Coach "B" managed to get ejected from the game due to 2 technicals, a premeditated plan to get Sam Coaching we are told. Sam finished the game with a huge "W" and everybody was happy. Apparently there's video footage of the event.

The team played and executed offensive as well as defensively, which showed during both games.

OXFORD HOOPS IS LOOKING FOR MALE PLAYERS AGED 13-14 TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THEIR U15 NATIONAL LEAGUE TEAM 2012-13. INTERESTED PLAYERS SHOULD TURN UP FOR TRAINING ON SUNDAYS 11.15am ST GREGORY THE GREAT SCHOOL, CRICKET ROAD, COWLEY, OXFORD, OX4 3DR

CVL UNDER 16s WEEK 1

November 6, 2010

Game Reviews for Saturday 6th November 2010

Oxford Hoops Chiefs vs. Oxford Hoops Apaches:

As both of the Oxford Hoops teams stepped onto the court to face up against each other in what would be a close game on paper. The starting 5’s were:
Chiefs Apaches
Amir Nico
Alexa Ivan
Alfance Martynas
James Isee
Jordan H Jack

As the game started, the Apaches won the tip off with Nico quickly taking control of the ball. The Apaches made a lot of forced shots leading to defensive rebound by James and Jordan H. Jordan then tapped the ball out of the Apaches hands as they drove for a lay-up and sent it down the court for Amir to score in the other end. The Apaches then took control of the game scoring one after another against the Chiefs off-target shots. After 10 minutes the Chiefs made some changes to the line up by bringing on the bench but leaving Amir on the court. With 5 minutes left in the first half, the Apaches were leading 20-6, with Nico and Ivan dominating inside the key. The Chiefs immediately hit back with Aleksa scoring a 3-pointer and James scoring form the elbow of the key. As the whistle blew for half time, the score was 25-12 to the Apaches.
As the second half started, both team made changes to the line up with the Chiefs bringing on James, Aleksa, Amir, Jordan H and Jordan S and the Apaches bringing on Peter, Robert, Ming and Jonathan. In the first few minutes of the second half the Apaches fouled twice along with the Chiefs scoring baskets, making the gap close to 5 points. With 10 and a half minutes to go, the Chiefs brought on Patrick and Benedikt who contributed along with Jordan H to push the Chiefs further into the lead. With 7 minutes to go the score was back to a 5 point gap with the Chiefs leading 30-25. The Chiefs then went on a scoring run a pushed the lead to 39-29 with 2 minutes left, and as the final whistle blew the Chiefs had gone all out to a 44-36 win. This game was the debut game for many of the players.

Oxford Hoops Chiefs vs. Faringdon Falcons:

Starting 5 for the Chiefs:
Amir
Patrick
Alfance
Abdul
Benedikt

This was the second game in a row for the Chiefs who were out to stay unbeaten against the Farringdon Falcons.

As the game started, Farringdon took the first points and take a 5-0 lead, which is answered back by Amir driving to hoop. With 9 minutes to go in the first half, Jordan S scored another 2 points but Farringdon were starting to pull away with an 11-3 lead. As the Chiefs called a time-out and refreshed themselves, they came back out to score 4 points from James and Jordan S. With 3 minutes left, Benedikt came on to score along with Amir and Jordan H. At the end of the first half, the Chiefs came back to take the lead at 17-16.
As soon as the whistle blew for the start of the second half, Farringdon scored 2 points with new players on the court. Amir then scored to make the score 19-18 but Farringdon replied with a drive to once again take the lead. A foul on the Chiefs levelled the score at 20-20. With 7 minutes to go and the score at 26-26, the Chiefs made a time-out and Alfance came on for Abdul. The score stayed level with 5 and half minutes left at 30-30 until James and Patrick came on and both scored along with Jordan to make the score 36-30. A silly foul gave Farringdon a point but with 1 minute and 30 seconds left, Farringdon were getting desperate and forcing shots. The Chiefs held onto their lead and added more points to end the game at 42-31.

By James Blencowe

Oxford Hoops Apaches vs. Faringdon Falcons:

The game started slowly with Faringdon taking a 5-2 lead. After 2 missed lay-ups from Hoops, Faringdon extended their lead to 7-3. Hoops fought back to 7-5 but again missed lay ups cost Hoops dearly going down 9-5. Hoops were trying to force the shot but with good play from Nico brought the Apaches back to within 1 point. Hoops drew level but Faringdon ran the fast break to again pull away going into half time 21-18 up.

Apaches started the second half strongly but Faringdon kept the pressure on to maintain their lead. A quick basket from Isee with a big inside move brought the Apaches back again and with 2 minutes to play, Apaches were leading 31-28. A missed free throw and a quick shot took the score to 32-30 to Apaches. Faringdon attacked and only a big block from Nico stopped them drawing level. Hoops got control of the ball but gave it up with 3 seconds to play. A very nervous end but Apaches held on for a great win.
