History of the Leishear Award & The Leishear Award Ring of Honor

The Leishear Sportsman award is named for the late Janice Leishear; an Arbutus resident and longtime player, coach, and board member of the AGAA. Janice played for AGAA in her youth and returned when her younger sister began to play and then again when her own daughter was old enough to participate. She become a coach in the program that she loved and believed in. Over the years Janice coached and mentored numerous young ladies in the skills of basketball and softball and produced more winning teams, recreation and travel, then can be remembered. Equally she instilled in all her players the honor of sportsmanship, the importance of teamwork and commitment, and to respect the Arbutus name they wore on their jerseys. She worked tirelessly as a recreation member to make sure the girls of the community were provided with a program that assured them equal treatment and facilities as athletes in the community. She was the major factor in the late nineties of taking a top rated slow pitch recreation and travel program to fast pitch when the girls starting falling short of making the high school teams. This was no small endeavor since it meant not only re-educating our players, but also our coaches and helping convince worried parents this move was how the program needed to evolve to in order to remain competitive. In the late 90's Janice was present to open the Leishear Field at Arbutus Elementary school, the only field to ever be named in honor of an Arbutus Girls Athletic Association member/participant. The opening ceremonies were attended by several hundred people including young women ranging in age from elementary school to college who had played for her and wanted to honor the woman they loved and respected. Janice passed away in 1999, but to many in the community and the organization her name remains synonymous with the AGAA and her spirit, principles, and character are recognized each and every year in the young ladies who are honored as recipients of the Leishear Sportsman Award.
