Jeff Baumback

 

Varsity - Head Coach

 

Coach Baumback enters the 2024-2025 season in his 8th year as head baseball coach at Rancho Bernardo, 15th year total as a head coach and 22nd year of coaching high school baseball at the Varsity level. He enters the 2024 season with a career head coaching record of 283-136-2. Jeff grew up in Pleasanton, CA and graduated from Amador Valley High School in 1998. In November of his senior year he signed a baseball scholarship offer to play at Arizona State University. He redshirted his freshman year due to shoulder surgery and transferred to Phoenix Junior College for the 2000 season. During the summer of 2000 he transferred to Long Beach State where he was coached by Dave Snow, Mike Weathers and Troy Buckley. Baumback pitched at Long Beach State from 2001-2003.

Baumback began his coaching career in 2004 as the Varsity Pitching Coach at Long Beach Wilson High School. His first season ended with a trip to Dodger Stadium to play in the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship game, losing 3-1 to Arlington High School of Riverside. Long Beach Wilson made a return trip to the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship game in 2007, beating Canyon High School of Anaheim 5-0. That same year, they were named by Baseball America as the #1 team in the nation with a 32-3 record. In 2008, Long Beach Wilson HS began the year as Baseball America's preseason #1 ranked team in the nation. Wilson made a return trip to the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship game, losing 4-1 in extra innings to Simi Valley High School. They finished with a record of 28-5-1 and finished ranked by Baseball America in the Top 25 in the nation.

In 2010, he was hired at Redondo Union High school and was tasked to add stability to the program and restore the proud baseball tradition at RUHS. Baumback's Sea Hawks reached the CIF Southern Section semi-finals in 2014, losing 3-1 to eventual champion Bishop Amat. In 2015, RUHS made a magical run in the 100th year of RUHS baseball by winning the CIF Southern Section Championship, the first in school history. Redondo Union made a return trip to the CIF Championship game in 2016 and completed the “Back to Back” CIF Champion feat. The 2016 RUHS team finished ranked #4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, #6 by USA Today, #13 by Baseball America and #20 by MaxPreps.

Baumback has received several coaching awards including: 2015 Cal Hi Sports Medium schools State Coach of the Year, 2015 CIF Southern Section Division III Coach of the Year, 2016 CIF Southern Section Division III Coach of the Year, 2016 Daily Breeze Newspaper Coach of the Year, 2016/2017 California Coaches Association – Southern California Coach of the year and as runner-up for State Coach of the Year. 2021 San Diego Padres High School Coach of the Week. 

During his combined 20 years at Long Beach Wilson, Redondo Union and Rancho Bernardo, he has coached 11 players that were signed by MLB teams and 3 that have made it to the Major Leagues. They include; Aaron Hicks, 2008, 1st round and 14th overall pick by the Minnesota Twins,  MLB Debut/Minnesota Twins 4/1/2013....... Tommy Nance, MLB Debut 5/17/2021, Chicago Cubs....... Zack Wilson, 2008, 26th round, Pittsburgh Pirates........ Coach Baumback holds a Degree in Kinesiology/Physical Education from Long Beach State, a California Teaching Credential in both Health and Physical Education, and a Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine.

 

Jake Blalock

Varsity - Head Hitting Coach/Oufield Coach

Jake Blalock returns to Rancho Bernardo High School after graduating in 2002. Blalock was a four-year varsity player at RBHS from 1999-2002. Their teams won CIF championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and runner-up in 2002. Blalock was All League in 2001 and 2002 and first team all CIF in 2002. Blalock was drafted fifth round in the 2002 Major League Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played an eight year minor league career with the Phillies, Royals and Rangers- winning two minor league championships in 2002 and 2007 and an All-Star appearance in 2004.

 

Finishing off his baseball career, Blalock played the 2009 season with the Italian Baseball League in Reggio Emilia. Over the next 7 years, Blalock worked as a custom cabinet maker and completed his degree in Mathematics and his teaching credential. In 2018 Blalock became head baseball coach at San Pasqual High School, taking them to their first CIF championship in the 40 year history of the school. In his four years at San Pasqual, the team had a 58-45 record with two Lyons Tournament championships, one CIF championship and one CIF runner-up. Blalock is in his fourth year of teaching math at the high school level and is currently in his first year at RBHS. Blalock resides in Escondido with his wife and three children.

 

 

Brandon Matheson

 

Varsity – Pitching Coach 

Coach Matheson is entering his 5th year as the Varsity Pitching Coach at Rancho Bernardo. He previously coached for four years at Mt. Carmel High School (2014-2017), as the teams Freshman Pitching Coach for three years and the Freshman Head Coach for one season. Under his guidance, as the pitching coach, the Freshman Baseball Team never had an ERA over 3.16 and never had more walks than strikeouts in a season. They also compiled a winning record two out of three seasons, the first time that happened since the early to mid-2000s.

Born and raised in San Diego, he attended and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School from 2009 - 2012. As a Student-Athlete he participated in both Water Polo and Baseball at the Varsity levels. During his senior year, Coach Matheson was being recruited in both Water Polo and Baseball respectively. He ended up going to Cal State Fullerton and made the Fall Baseball Roster as a pitcher. After about a month of workouts and playing, Matheson sustained an elbow injury during practice.

After months of trying to decide the next step, he decided to step away as a player and begin coaching. Thus, he went back to his high school roots and began coaching with his former coaches’ Travel Ball Team, the San Diego Deacons for three seasons, 2013 - 2016, and therefore landing a job at Mt. Carmel High School. As of late September, he is also the Baseball Director for the Rancho Bernardo Warriors Baseball Program. Furthermore, he has also coached for the California Baseball Academy (CBA) as a pitching coach within their organization. Lastly, Coach Matheson is going back to college to get a B.S. in Criminal Justice, as he already has an Associate's Degree in the aforementioned field.

Cap Haigler

Varsity – Assist. Hitting Coach/Assist. Infield Coach

 

Cap Haigler begins his 5th year at RB and 4th on the Varsity staff after spending 2018 season as an assistant JV coach. He brings 16 years of baseball coaching experience at levels from youth travel teams to the summer collegiate leagues.

 

He most recently worked as Junior Varsity Coach for the Broncos last season after coaching varsity baseball at San Pasqual High School for 4 seasons and at the summer collegiate level at San Diego’s Coastal Collegiate League.

 

A graduate of Eastern Michigan University and former high school teacher, Cap served as a United States Naval Aviator from 1982 thru 1989 flying tactical operations from ships throughout the Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf and recently completed a 30 year career as a Captain for Delta Air Lines flying to global destinations from his base at the Los Angeles International Airport.

 

Cap, his wife Cecilia and two sons Anderson and Archer are long-time San Diego residents and he will contribute a wealth of coaching experience, energy, leadership skills and provide a unique ability to connect with each player to help refine not only their baseball skill set but also prepare them for the challenges beyond the high school baseball experience.

                                                                                                                                               Junior Varsity – Head Coach

Miguel Flores begins his 4th year in the Rancho Bernardo High School baseball program and 1st at the Varsity level. Miguel spent the 2021 season as the Head JV baseball coach after serving as a JV assistant the two previous years.  He was born and raised in the Bay Area of Northern California. In his hometown, Miguel played baseball at James Logan High School. He excelled as the starting shortstop, receiving the award of 1st team All-Mission Valley Athletic League both his Junior and Senior year.  

Miguel then attended Chabot Junior College, where he received Second Team All-Conference during his 2008-2009 season. In the 2009-2010 season he was awarded with First Team All-Conference.  Miguel finished his college baseball career at San Francisco State University. He received the Second Team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Award two times. Coupling his successful baseball career, Miguel completed a B.A. in Criminal Justice. Post-college, Miguel continued his baseball career in the PECOS league of New Mexico, where he played for the Alamogordo Pupfish. 

 

Miguel retired from baseball in 2014.   He is now in the process of completing his Masters Degree in Education, hoping to teach Physical Education and become a head coach one day.

 

Miguel is new to coaching but looks to help the Broncos baseball players with his skills and knowledge of the physical mechanics of the game.  With the help of Coach Baumback and his staff, he will look to improve the athletes both mentally and physically.

Marty Mullins

Varsity – Catching Coach

 

Marty Mullins begins his first year as a Varsity assistant baseball coach at Rancho Bernardo High School. Coach Mullins played baseball for over 20 years, primarily as a catcher.

Marty was born and raised in Los Gatos, California. He attended Los Gatos High School, where he played baseball and football for all four years. He was a three-time De Anza League selection, earned league MVP honors in 2005, and named All-Central Coast Section and San Jose Mercury News 2005 Junior of the Year. He also led his team to its first Central Coast Section championship in school history. After high school, Marty played baseball at Loyola Marymount University, West Valley Junior College, and UC Santa Barbara.
As starting catcher at UC Santa Barbara, he was a 2-time All-Big West Honorable Mention selection, hitting .295 and .319 in his first two seasons. Marty hit 8 homeruns and carried a .566 slugging percentage his senior year, both highest on the team.

 

Marty and his wife, Jessica, moved to Rancho Bernardo from the Silicon Valley in early 2019. Marty currently runs his San Diego based financial planning and investment firm, Black Horse Wealth Management. Outside of work and baseball, he enjoys golfing, boating, hiking, and skiing.
