Springstroh earns Cubs Team MVP

November 7, 2006
Tim Springstroh batted a team (& league) high .488 with 15 RBI’s & 2 home runs to earn the Cubies 2006 team MVP. He dethroned last years MVP Ernie Bianco who batted .471 (second in the league & team) with 7 RBI’s. “Tim had a fantastic year for us. We made a nice run late in the year and Tim was clutch when we needed him to be, said Bianco.” Springstroh was a bright spot which can be considered a dismal year for the Cubbies. “I think our weakness’ caught up with us do to injuries & MIA’s and we didn’t have the depth like in the years past to cover us! Cubs move on, beat Astros 13-8

August 3, 2006
The Rockledge Cubs seemed to save their best for last by beating the Astros 13-8. Lenny Stahley provided some stability on the mound by pitching a near flawless five and a third innings to earn the win. The Cubs bats finally awakened with a ten hit attack led by Bob Robidoux and Nate Terryn triples. Tim Armenta led the fourth inning off with a nice double to cap a four run inning. Tim Springstroh and Ernie Bianco added two a piece to the offensive frenzy. Bianco who had hits in his last five at bats going into the game, wish he had the same luck in the field. Bianco made several errors, but was bailed out by the Cubs offensive explosion. "I don't like making errors because the pitcher has to work that much harder to get out of an inning. But, If I picked a game to make errors in the field, it was this one. WE got the win and that's all it counts! I'm glad to see our guys not roll over and play dead after a sub-par year. Its good for the TEAM's morale!"

The Cubs play the Loser of the Pirates/Brewers game. Game time Thursday night, 7:00 at Veterans Park.

Astros pitcher James Hodges (winning pitcher) held the Cubs in check until the Cubs scored four runs in the fourth inning. Tim Springstroh was the losing pitcher for the Cubs but continued to swing a hot bat by going 1 for 2 and a RBI. Nate Terryn and Chuck Woodall combined for three hits and five RBI's on the day to lead the Cubs' offense. Dick Spalding came in relief for Springstroh in the fifth inning and held the Astros at bay, only allowing one unearn run in two and a third innings worth of work. Up next for the Cubs, the Americans at West Oaks @ 7:00 Wednesday.

Pirates Slip by Cubs 6-5

July 14, 2006
Tim Springstroh drives in four runs including a two run homer and Jeff Marr pitches three solid innings but it wasn't enough to over throw the Play it again Sports Pirates. The Pirates managed to score six runs on four hits and six walks to defeat the Cubbies. The Cubbie did however play a solid game and seem to be getting back to full strength. Ernie Bianco had a chance to tie the game in the top of seventh by his hard line drive was caught by the first baseman, who then stepped on the bag to double up Mike Ramos. That's a tough way to lose it, but I'm glad to see us pull together and play a solid game, said Player/Coach Bianco". Next up for the Cubs, the Astros Sunday at West Oaks @ 10:00.

Brewers Pound Cubs..... AGAIN!

July 6, 2006
The Rockledge Cubs playing with a thin lineup, get pounded by the Brevard Brewers 16-2. The Cubs pitching and bats are No where to be found. Playing without some of their normal starters, the team's swagger has diminished! Joe Queen led the way on the hill for the Brewers and was the winning pitcher of record. The Brewers pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of the Cubs pitching who allowed twelve walks on the night.

The Cubs take on the Astros in a DH at Rockledge Park Sunday July 9th starting @ 10:00.

Horan out duels Bianco

July 6, 2006
Brian Horan led the way for the Palm Bay Americans, pitching a five hitter and striking out ten Cubs to lead the Americans to a 5-1 victory. Losing pitcher Ernie Bianco kept the Americans off balance all evening allowing four hits, but the Americans made the most of their opportunities. Bianco was pitching a No-hitter going into the fourth inning. With one out, Steve Larussa lined a hard single into right center field. Bianco then walked two Americans to load the bases and gave up a double and the Americans went ahead 3-1. The Americans manufactured two more runs in the sixth to go up 5-1. The damage came on two singles, a hit batter, a pass ball and a sacrifice fly. Lenny Stahley led the Cubbies at the plate with two hits and one RBI. "Our defense played great tonight behind me, the Americans just made the most of their opportunities tonight, said Bianco."

Next game: Thursday July 6th Brewers at Cubs at Rockledge Park @ 7:00.

Cubs split twin-bill with Brewers

June 19, 2006
The Cubs woes continued Sunday in the first game of the twin-bill against the Brevard Brewers, losing 9-1. The Cubs only hit was a double off the bat of Brad Ames in the second inning. To avoid being shutout for the first time this year, Bob Robidoux walked with one out in the fifth inning. Robidoux then stole second and third base and scored on the bad throw down to third base. This was the third poor showing in three games for the Cubs. Mark Cronan suffered the loss on the mound for the Cubs. "Walks and errors will kill you every time and today it was the walks. Our defense played very good, but the walks and their timely hitting killed us, said coach Ernie Bianco. That kid Hrorvsky, was bringing the heat for them (Brewers) today. We never faced him before and he is by far the hardest thrower in the league. I think our guys like hitting fastball pitchers like him, however, I don’t think anyone was mentally prepared for that today, said coach Bianco!”

In the second game, the Cubs were on the verge of being shutout. Then the flood gates opened up in sixth inning when the Brewers changed pitchers. The Cubs managed to push across four runs on walks, errors and timely hitting to close the gap to 5-4. In the top of the seventh inning, the Cubs found life again. With two outs, Mark Cronan singled up the middle. Then with a 3-2 count on him, Lenny Stahley hit high shallow pop up to left field. The left fielder who was playing very deep, Could not come up with the ball. Mark Cronan running on the pitch, scored all the way from first base to tie the game at 5-5. Then Lenny Stahley scored on a close play at the plate to put the Cubs up 6-5. Jeff Marr then put the dagger in the Brewers with a double that scored two runs to increase the Cubs lead to 8-5. Ernie Bianco took over pitching for Tim Armenta in the fifth inning and shut the doors on the Brewers bats for three innings. Bianco gave up one run on three hits with one strike out to earn his first victory of the season on the mound for the Cubs. "I have to give the defense a lot of credit, they played great. Duke and Brad Ames played great middle infield and D’Annuzio (Bob Robidoux) saved me with that great catch in center field, said Bianco!"

American Pound Cubs 17-1

June 11, 2006
The Rockledge Cubs early season woes continue. The Palm Bay Americans with their leader Troy Cox back in place as Manager, pound the Cubbies 17-1 in five innings at west Oaks. The Americans came out hitting, pounding out eleven hits off of starting pitcher Tim Springstroh in one and two thirds innings. Ernie Bianco who went two for two at the plate with an RBI single, relieved Springstroh and shut down the Americans for one and third innings. Then Bianco handed the ball over to Dick Spalding, who made a couple of nifty plays and kept the Americans off balance the rest of the way. However, it wasn't enough. The Cubs were "run ruled" for the second game in a row. The Cubs will try to bounce back Tuesday night at West Oaks (7:00), where they take on the Space Coast Astros for the first time this season. Mark Cronan "The Barbarian" is the scheduled starter on the hill for the Cubs vs the Astros.

Brad Ames and Mike Ramos provided the pop for the Cubs, each hitting doubles in the Cubs eight hit attack. But it wasn't enough on this evening. The Cubs left eleven men on base in the game. Then Bob (D'Annuzio) Robidoux started the second inning of with a solo shot (HR) to put the Cubs up 4-1. The Cubbies took advantage of the Sharks pitching woes and pushed across five more runs in the inning. Holding a 9-2 lead, the Cubs pushed four more runs across with a Nate Terryn double that highlighted the inning. “Duke Ames homers on his last swing of batting practice Sunday”

May 15, 2006
Seven Cubs report to camp early on Mother’s day. Marco Guitierrez, Tom Lombardo, (the ageless one) Charlie Terryn, Duke Ames, Chuck Woodall, newly acquired Jeff Marr and interim coach and last season’s team MVP Ernie Bianco all reported to camp early with hopes of winning a Roy Hobbs Championship this season. “I’m glad to see this many guys out this early” said player/interim coach Ernie Bianco. “I like what I saw today for the first practice.” Jeff Marr, Chuck Woodall, Duke Ames (who homered on his last swing of the day) all had impressive showings today.
The Cubs get back a healthy Chuck Woodall (2004 MVP) who is looking to bounce back from last season’s knee injury. Duke Ames, well, is Duke Ames. “The guy comes out and plays a third of our season’s games but contributes a bunch when we have him.” Jeff Marr was no surprise to Bianco. “I played with Jeff on the Titusville Blue Room Rockets of the Space Coast Stan Musial League. Pitching may be a question with Jeff, nonetheless, he can still swing a good stick.” The Cubs’ MVP from last season Ernie Bianco said he felt good taking cuts after injuring his wrist in the off season. Bianco batted .542 last season while collecting thirty-three hits and did not have a strike out all season. Tom Lombard and Marco Guitierrez look to hold down the outfield duties this season while Charlie Terryn will contribute with his stick off the bench for the Cubbies.
With opening day tentatively scheduled for June 4th, Bianco hopes to have the rest of the team out there this week. The Cubs have a scheduled practice for May 18 (Thursday) at Kennedy middle school in Rockledge and another practice on Sunday May 21 (location TBA on the 21st).

"Cubs talk Marr out of retirement?"

May 12, 2006
-- The Rockledge Cubs may have landed a big name. The Cubs GM and interim coach Ernie Bianco has been locked in to negotiations with Jeff Marr. Marr a former BCC/Titusville high standout and Pro prospect has been bitten by the baseball bug again. “Jeff has sat down with me and we have talked. His schedule will depend on his son’s Little League schedule over the summer. Jeff could give us another big lefty hitter down the stretch in the playoffs and I told him playing time could be flexible, said Bianco” Although Marr was a standout pitcher in his prime, his duties will be limited to playing first base and DH. “He has not signed officially, but we are hoping to get it done by the end of May.” The Cubs will be without their Coach and starting catcher Don Ingram for the season. Lenny Stahley and Matt Hixon figure to fill in that spot until Ingram works he’s way back next season. “ I think Lenny will fill in nicely for Donnie at catcher. We also Doug Mays at shortstop, Nathan Terryn at third base, Chuck Woodall/Matt Hixon/Jeff Marr at first base and myself (Ernie Bianco) at second base. We should have a solid infield to start the season.” The Cubs will have to address the need for pitching to win the championship this season. The Cubs offense has carried them the last couple of seasons, but pitching will be the answer.
