History of LYHL

The Lyndhurst Youth Hockey League (LYHL) started in 1975 as a street hockey league organized by a small, dedicated group of players and coaches. For most of the early years of the LYHL, players competed on foot in between the potholes, padded poles, and backboards of local basketball courts and school yards. In the mid-1990s, the LYHL incorporated roller hockey into the program and soon moved games to its new facility on Riverside Avenue. The last street hockey games were played in 1997 as the LYHL moved exclusively to roller hockey. It was also during this time that teams from Lyndhurst first started to compete in the North Jersey Youth Roller Hockey Association (NJYRHA)--an outdoor travel league composed of roller hockey teams from towns throughout the Bergen County area. In 2006, the rink on Riverside Avenue was dedicated to the memory of long-time Lyndhurst commissioner, Peter J. Russo. In 2009, the rink surface suffered extensive damage due to weathering and groundwater erosion which caused delays in the recreation season and cancelation of home travel games. In March 2010, the rink on Riverside Avenue was dismantled and construction of a new rink at Volunteer Field began. After a productive summer, the new Peter J. Russo rink at Volunteer Field opened with recreation games in early October 2010.
From very humble beginnings, the LYHL now offers boys and girls from kindergarten through high school a roller hockey program that includes multiple divisions of recreational roller hockey every autumn and a group of competitive travel teams that participate in the NJYRHA each winter.
