General Questions about League Format:

Question: What types of teams or levels of basketball does ETYB offer?

ETYB seeks to offer three different levels of basketball for Edison residents. (Note: Non-residents are not eligible and will be removed once identified.)

  • Clinic:  For grades 1 & 2, Clinic seeks to introduce the game of basketball to students by teaching them the basic fundamentals of the game (shoot, dribble, pass skills). 8 foot height baskets are used to help develop proper shooting skills. There are no “teams” at this level.

  • Recreation (Rec) Basketball:  ETYB offers rec basketball for students in grades 3 thru high school.  Skill levels will vary amongst players as they develop skills, knowledge, awareness and experience playing organized basketball.  Teams (up to 10 players per team) are formed, games are played with referees, and include playoffs.  Games and practices are led by volunteer coaches, and the league strives to find competitive balance across the teams.

  • Travel Basketball: Travel teams are made up of elite players from Edison and will play against neighboring towns. Players must tryout for the team and be selected to participate.  Travel is a more competitive form of organized youth basketball. (Note: At this time, ETYB is not creating travel teams for 2023-24, but is working to resume its Travel program in the near future.)

Question:   Do girls and boys play together?

No, for recreation basketball we have separate divisions for the boys and girls. Rookie (3rd/4th grade); Minor (5th/6th grade): Major (7th/8th grade boys; 7th/8th/9th grade girls); and the Senior (9th thru 12th grade boys only) division.

For the Clinic program (grade 1 and 2), boys and girls are grouped together.

Questions about the schedule & general logistics:

Question:   How many games are there?

  • For the Clinic program, there are no "games". The clinics are scheduled for 10 sessions (Saturday mornings, starting in early December.)

  • For the Recreation league, ETYB schedules 8-10 games for each team, plus playoffs. All teams make the playoffs.

  • For Travel, teams typically play 20+ games a season, and thus there is a higher fee associated with the team.

Question:   How many practices will there be each week?  What time and where are they held?

Typically, Recreation teams will practice once/week, with the date/location/time scheduled at the volunteer coaches’ discretion.  ETYB secures space at one of the Edison school gyms (elementary and middle schools) and coaches work with the league to schedule their practice sessions. Practices are typically any day; Mon-Fri., 6:30pm, 7:30pm or 8:30pm.  Extra practices are allowed only if there is available gym space. No Practices on Sunday

NOTE: If your child has a busy schedule, this program might not be for them. Our schedules are not set and can be different each week.

Question:   When does the season start / end?

  • For children registered for the Clinic program (students in grades 1 & 2) - the clinics are anticipated to start the first Saturday of December.  There are 10 clinics scheduled over the course of the season.

  • For Recreation basketball league (grades 3 thru high school), practices are anticipated to start in late November and games are anticipated to start in December.  For those that register early, the goal is to provide pre-season clinic(s) in October, depending on gym availability.  A player evaluation will be scheduled prior to forming teams.  The season will conclude by the end of March.  Individual teams’ seasons may end earlier, depending on how far they advance in the ETYB playoffs.

  • Currently, ETYB is not planning on resuming Travel basketball for the 2023-24 season.  In the future, travel basketball is expected to resume and will commence in September with tryouts.  At the coaches’ discretion, practices/games will be scheduled thereafter.

Go to calendar for specific dates.

Question:   What is the player evaluation, and when are they held?

Evaluation night is for recreation league players only. The evaluation is designed to allow the coaches to assess the basic skill level of every player.  Coaches will evaluate whether players can dribble, shoot, pass, as well as assess their general athletic abilities through a quick set of basketball drills.  This information is used solely to try and create competitive balance throughout each division and team.  As such, all players are required to be at the player evaluation night.  Recreation league players will be placed on teams based on the number of volunteer coaches available in each division.  Those players in attendance on evaluation night are prioritized for placement on teams.

Evaluations are typically held in early November. See calendar for schedule

Question: My child could not make the player evaluations. Will there a make-up date?

No.  Unfortunately, our teams are managed by volunteer coaches.  If we have enough coaches, your child should still be placed on a team.  If there aren’t enough coaches and we need to cut players, those not in attendance on evaluation night will not be placed on teams.

Question: Can my child be placed on the same team as their friend? It helps with rides to/from practices.

No.  Given the number of kids participating in ETYB and the desire to ensure competitive balance of teams, such requests cannot be honored.  That said, we do understand the desire and value in carpooling, or that participating with the friend helps kids want to participate in such activities.  Our recommendation is to register, and then speak with the division coordinator at the player evaluation night. Such requests can be shared with the coaches during the team drafts, and they can attempt to address them while forming competitive teams. Please recognize, there are no guarantees that coordinators and coaches will be able to resolve the issues and place them on the same team.

Question:   What night are the games played?

In general, ETYB has access to the gyms from 6:15-9:45pm (weeknights); and Saturdays from 8:00am - 3pm.  We seek to schedule and share that information with coaches and families as soon as possible to support your ability to plan as well.  Schedules may be adjusted if gym availability is lost due to weather or school needs.

For recreation, we prioritize Saturdays for games for Rookies / Minors, though some Friday evenings may also be scheduled.  Majors / Seniors may have games scheduled on any night of the week, or on Saturdays too.  Girls division teams may also play on other days as well, including Sundays, if games are scheduled against neighboring towns (many township rec leagues struggle to field enough girls to form multiple teams to exclusively play within their town.)

(As a reminder, the Clinic program is always scheduled for Saturday mornings.)

Question:   Where and when are the Clinics held?

The Clinic program is only for 1s & 2nd grade boys & girls, and are scheduled at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 450 Division St., Edison 08817 on Saturday mornings.

Question:   When does Clinic start and for how many weeks?

The Clinic program is expected to start the first Saturday of December and will continue for 10 weeks. Schedule is dependent on availiability of the gym at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

Question:   What size ball do players use at each grade level?

  • 28.5” (Boys: thru grade 6; Girls: all ages/grades)

  • 29.5" (Boys: Grades 7+)

Questions regarding Registration:

Question: When does registration begin?

Registration typically begins annually in early September. For 2023, registration is expected to begin on September 1, 2023.

Question: Is there a registration cutoff date?

Registration will close on October 31, or earlier if capacity is reached. As such, it may remain open for certain age / division levels and not others through October. In the event that a division is full, we may add a waitlist. The wait list does not guarantee a spot on a team, but those on the waitlist will be prioritized if players drop or signed up for the wrong division.

Question: How much is it to play with ETYB?

The costs vary based on which format you are seeking to register your child for, with a potential for an early registration discount. League fees can be found here: https://www.leaguelineup.com/miscinfo.asp?menuid=33&url=etyb

Question: Which division does my child belong in?

  • Clinic - 1st & 2nd grades (no player evaluations needed);

  • Rookies - 3rd & 4th grades;

  • Minors - 5th & 6th grades;

  • Majors - (boys) 7th & 8th grades ; (girls) 7th, 8th, & 9th grades

Question: How do I know my child is registered?

When you complete the registration process, you will receive an email from the registration system. It should said that you have paid. If not, there could be a issue with your registration.

Question: Who is eligible to play / register for ETYB?

For Clinics and Recreation basketball - only Edison residents are eligible to participate. Non-Edison residents will be removed from the program, and the roster spot given to an Edison resident. Registration fees for non-residents who innapropriately registered will not be refunded.
