The Lanco Senior Modified Softball League will go to bat for the Lancaster County Little League Challenger program at 6 p.m. Friday in its annual All-Star game at Garrett Park in Willow Street.
The public is invited to the event, which includes a home run derby, a Challenger exhibition game.
“Our goal is to raise $3,000 for the Challenger program,” said player Barry Weaver, 74, of Willow Street. It’s our way of giving back to those that play a game that we enjoy.”
He noted that those who come to the game might be “surprised and amazed” by the play of the seniors, who have a “young spirit,” at 60+ years of age.
“We’re actually 16-year-olds in 60-year-old bodies,” joked Dave Rineer, 70, of West Lampeter Township.
Joe Ives, 69, of Landisville, agreed that the players’ enthusiasm isn’t diminished by their years.
“I remember my excitement in my first senior All-Star game,” he said. “It was like being a kid again.”
Gene Driscoll, 67, of Willow Street, noted that America’s national pastime is for everyone of all ages and abilities.
“We even have two players that are in their 80s and love the game,” he said.
The Challenger Little League program has been active in the county for the past 27 years. It was formed to provide children with physical or mental challenges the opportunity to compete in sports.
With 175 players, the Challengers are recognized as an extension of the Little League International in Williamsport.
A buddy system helps the players who require assistance.
“We are excited to support the Challengers through our All-Star game,” Weaver said.
