Star Ledger:

March 30, 2007
Team of the year:

Long in the shadows of its prodigious wrestling neighbors in Warren County, Hackettstown stepped to the fore this season and elevated itself into the state's wrestling hierarchy.

It won its first conference championship -- the Skyland Conference-Raritan Division -- its first Hunterdon-Warren Tournament, a second straight District 1 team title after a 47-year drought and stormed to the NJSIAA Group 2 final before being derailed, 42-9, by South Plainfield, No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20.

Hackettstown (20-2) also defeated league rival Delaware Valley, 35-23 on Jan. 13, for the first time since 1968. Its only other loss came to South Plainfield, too, 27-21, on Jan. 15.

Hackettstown ended with the No. 6 ranking in The Star-Ledger Top 20.

"We pretty much accomplished everything we set out to except the group title," Hackettstown coach Frank Rodgers said. "We just kept breaking school records. No other wrestling team at Hackettstown came close to achieving what this team achieved."

It used a balanced lineup to overwhelm its opponents.

The heavy hitters were brothers Cory Vernon (39-4 at 145 pounds) and Owen Vernon (30-8 at 152), brothers Zach Ulm (36-7 at 189) and Taylor Ulm (33-5 at 135), J.J. Mitchell (33-7 at 160), Luckson Etienne (28-8 at 119), Billy Strathern (28-9 at 140), Cory Kozimor (28-10 at 103) and Keith Swanson (28-10 at 130).

Kozimor and Cory Vernon became the team's first region champions since Todd Garriques won Region 1 at 152 pounds in 1992. Vernon placed seventh in the state tournament and Zack Ulm was eighth. Kozimor, Swanson, both Ulms and both Vernons won District 1 championships.

Great night for Phillipsburg, Warren Hills and Hackettstown at NJSIAA Region 1 Wrestling Tournament
by Nick Fierro

Friday February 27, 2009, 9:26 PM

On a night when powerhouse high schools such as Phillipsburg and High Point dominated in terms of sheer numbers, relatively tiny Hackettstown took center stage in the NJSIAA Region 1 quarterfinals at Wallkill Valley tonight.

Ryan Nicotra and Erik Mitchell each pulled off stunning upsets to provide the Tigers with an unexpected momentum burst heading into tomorrow's marathon conclusion at the same site.

Nicotra, wrestling against No. 2 seed Bill Hagany of Lenape Valley at 103 pounds, started it off by rolling Hagany to his back despite being cradled and holding him there long enough to score a defensive pin with just 9 seconds remaining in the first period.

At 130, Mitchell drew top seed Chris Burdge of Kittatinny for his match and did an even better job than Nicotra, locking up a cradle for three back points in the closing seconds to win a 7-4 decision.

Nicotra and Mitchell will join teammate Corey Kozimor (119) in tomorrow morning's semifinals.

Advancing for Phillipsburg were John Horak (125), Matt Lane (130), Oliver Brukardt (140), Nick Pare (145), Eric Bohem (171), Jared Crouse (189), Matt Santini (215) and Mike Simon, who also pulled off a major upset when he stuck No. 2 seed Shane Parcel with a cement job at 160.

Among the others to win in the quarterfinals Friday night were Warren Hills' Matt Schuebel (125), Rick Graff (145), Matt Artigliere (160) and Jon Slack (285) and North Warren's Kevin Brown (152).

For the longest time in Mitchell's match, it appeared his strategy to take top in second period was going to backfire. He did ride Burdge the whole period, but failed to turn him, then fell behind 4-2 when Burdge went neutral in the third and promptly took Mitchell down.

Nervous as Mitchell was, he never panicked. Eventually he was able to work a reversal before hitting the cradle.

Here are the complete quarterfinal results:

Wrestling: Contingency plans for postponed sectional matches

Wrestling: Contingency plans for postponed sectional matches
By Joe Zedalis/For The Star-Ledger
February 08, 2010, 9:50PM
The NJSIAA Monday sent a memo to all sectional wrestling sites indicating tentative plans for any matches postponed by the expected inclement weather Wednesday.

The memo reads as follows:

1. If the predicted snow storm forces a cancellation of matches on Wednesday, Feb. 10, we urge all teams to make up Wednesday's sectional semifinal match on Thursday, Feb. 11. Subsequently, the finals will remain on Friday, Feb. 12.

2. If Wednesday's postponed sectional semifinals can not be held Thursday, Feb. 11, it must be held Friday, Feb. 12. Subsequently, the sectional finals will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13. If a sectional final must be held Saturday. it should be held in the morning or afternoon.

Because there are so many variables due to cancellations, we are granting a two-pound allowance for every team throughout the entire tournament (including Sunday's group championships).

103 becomes 107, 112 becomes 116, 119 becomes 123 and so on.

Hackettstown High wrestling update

Hackettstown High wrestling update

TONY IANNITELLI/SPECIAL TO THE REPORTER
Hackettstown High 215-pounder Khalid Zubaydi (top), here battling Warren Hills’ Kyle O’Donnell earlier this season, has been a steady performer for the Tigers. Hackettstown competed in the North Jersey Section 2 Group 2 tournament this week and will be going after District 1 honors next weekend.

By Tony Iannitelli

Be happy you weren’t Archie Manning last weekend.
Do you root for the team you played for your entire NFL career and have continued to work for most of your adult life? Or do you root for your son, on the competing team, to win the Super Bowl? Well . . . there might be worse dilemmas to have.
So put yourself in the shoes of Frank Rodgers, the 13-year head coach at Hackettstown High. Rodgers brought his third-seeded Tigers (13-5) into the first round of the North Jersey Section 2 Group 2 state tournament Monday against Caldwell. His sons, Frank and Nick, just happen to wrestle for Caldwell.
Who was Rodgers rooting for? His sons?
“No, no,” he said last week. “Well, let me put it to you this way — at least I get to watch them. That doesn’t happen often during the season.”
Allegiances to family and team aside, Rodgers felt pretty good about his team as they started the wrestling championship season at home Monday.
“They look good,” he said. “Everybody’s healthy — except we lost our ‘45 pounder (Matt Malejko). He’s out for the year. He’s our only casualty, so far.
“We’re getting stronger. We’re wrestling better every time we go out there. We’re getting better with every match. We haven’t peaked yet. I think we’re peaking at the right time, when it counts the most.”
The best evidence of that would be the Tigers’ recent performances. Hackettstown traveled to Newton Feb. 3, losing a 29-28 decision to the 11th-ranked team in the state. The previous weekend HHS placed third in the highly-competitive Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament, although perennial power Phillipsburg didn’t bring seven of its regulars because of season match limitations.
“Coming into the season, we had our whole team coming back from last year,” said Rodgers. “I expected to do well in dual meets but we’ve also done pretty well in tournaments (HHS took third at the Morris Knolls Tournament and won the Lenape Valley Tournament).
“The biggest surprise was in that Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex tourney, where we placed third. With High Point (ranked No. 1 in the state) winning and Hunterdon Central (No. 5) second, it really showed us what we are capable of.”
The Tigers were led in the tourney by Andrew Scudder with a first place at 189 pounds and seconds by Corey Kozimor (130) and Erik Mitchell (140).
If the Tigers knocked off No. 6 seed Caldwell Monday, they were scheduled to next face second-seeded Brearley tonight in Kenilworth. Top-seeded Hanover Park, Voorhees and Governor Livingston-Berkeley Heights were also in the mix.
“I think the sectionals are wide open,” said Rodgers. “There are a couple of other teams that could step up and make it interesting. We’ve got Caldwell at home. We’ve wrestled them once this year and won. If we get past them, we’ll probably travel to Brearley on Wednesday. We just need to do what we’ve done all year . . . take it one match at a time.”
As for the District 1 tournament and beyond . . .
“We’ve got a lot of strong competitors,” said Rodgers. “Corey Kozimor (18-2) made it to Atlantic City (state finals) last year. We expect him to get pretty far. Khalid Zubaydi (17-5) is looking good against some tough competition. Ryan NiCotra (21-7) and Erik Mitchell (21-6) have also done well.
“Andrew Scudder (22-5) has been solid and the tournament win last week showed what he can do. A lot of the guys can go deep. Corey can get to AC again and it would be nice for him to have some company.”
Anyone that could be a surprise?
“You know, Ryan (Nicotra) is a solid wrestler at ’12. He’s very talented. I’ll tell you . . . it’s a tough weight. It’s like six deep in our district. There’s going to be a lot of good wrestling at ’12. Anything can happen.
“Kevin Bohm (6-5) is at 160. He started winning wrestle-offs midway through the season. He lost his first couple of matches but has really come on. He’s had some tough competition, like when he went against John Guzzo (High Point) in the (H-W-S) tournament. The kid (Guzzo) is a monster. But Kevin’s getting some good experience under his belt and he’s learning quick. He could get a good run.”
The wrestling room at Hackettstown seemed especially hot and steamy during practice the day after the close loss to Newton.
Everyone was focused and seemed to be buoyed by being competitive with their neighbor to the north. This group was definitely not deflated by the loss.
With the most exciting part of the season coming up, Hackettstown is geared up to make the most of it. The next month showcases the best of the best and the Tigers are ready to jump in the mix.
Newton 29, HHS 28 — Bonus points made the difference Feb. 3 as Newton got three majors, two pins and a tech fall among its six victories.
Corey Kozimor (125, 15-0) captured a tech fall for the Tigers, Tyler Kozimor (103, 10-0) and Erik Mitchell (145, 8-0) earned majors and also winning were Rob Napolitano (130, 8-5), Jason Rothman (152, 8-2), Andrew Scudder (189, 9-2), Khalid Zubaydi (215, 3-1) and Steve Giraldo (285, 1-0).
