295 melts and is eliminated

July 18, 2013

On yet another brutally hot and humid day, 295 melted down.  Brian Rourke saw his first playoff start begin in stellar fashion by putting the first seven Sandy Spring batters down in order.  But a few costly errors by the usually good 295 defense put them in a 3-1 hole after 3 innings of play.  The home half of the fourth inning saw 295 get a run back thanks to two errors by the Sandy Spring shortstop.  In the fifth inning, 295 scored two more runs to take a 4-3 lead in large part due to a double by Colin Thatcher and yet another error by the Sandy Spring shortstop as well as a 2-run single by Nick Siegel.  Sandy Spring was able to tie the score at four when they plated a run in the top of the sixth.  In the bottom of the sixth, after two outs,  Scott Ardion walked and Thatcher smoked a two-run homer over the left field fence to give 295 a 6-4 lead going into the last inning.  Rourke who was exhausted after 105 pitches was relieved by JJ Jan.  Jan did not fare well in the seventh inning.  Sandy Spring hits, walks and more errors by 295 did them in.  295 threatened in the bottom of the seventh down 11-6 by loading the bases with one out, but unfortunately Mike Shannon hit into a season ending double play.

295 pushed to elimination bracket

July 17, 2013

Another very hot and humid day in Germantown found 295 falling to Damascus. Bacchus got the call and for 5 innings had another solid outing, allowing just two runs.  But the bottom of the sixth inning was not kind to him at all. Even with another solid defensive game from 295 in which three double plays were turned, the Damascus pitcher was pitching lights out, silencing 295 bats for the most part. The pair of runs were scored in the fourth inning when Nick Siegel reached base on a walk and moved to second on a shot by Mike Shannon that was deflected by the Damascus pitcher, on what would have been a sure ending inning double play.  Thayer Seely was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second.  The hot-hitting Quoc “Cookie” Tran singled in Siegel, followed by a Joey Moeltner RBI single scoring Seely. 295 didn’t threaten again until the top of the seventh inning, but Damascus’ pitcher shut 295 down to end any threat of a comeback.

Play it again Sam

July 16, 2013

On a very hot and humid day, Thayer Seeley took to the mound to start the game. Laurel jumped on him quickly scoring four runs on solid hitting. 295 finally answered back in the bottom of the third inning with back to back singles by Scott Ardoin and Colin Thatcher and then a bases clearing double by Quoc “Cookie” Tran.  The scoring ended after Joey Moeltner doubled in Tran to make the score 4-3 Laurel.  Each team traded runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  Seely gave way to JJ Jan who got in and out of trouble in the sixth inning allowing no runs.  Jan lead off the home half of sixth inning with a single and was sacrificed to second on an Ardoin bunt.  Nick Siegel reached base on an error moving Jan to third.  Tran, who has already had a big day at the plate, was intentionally walked to load the bases with two out.  Sam Shin, pinch hitting for Steve D’Amato, showed his patience at the plate while being walked and scoring Jan to tie the game at six.  Siegel later scored, what turned out to be, the game winning run on a pitch in the dirt that got away from the catcher.  Jan took the hill in the seventh and shut the door on Laurel and secured the come from behind win and advance 295 to the next round of the playoffs against Damascus.

Hottest team in Sr. Legion

July 7, 2013

With the thrashing win against Wheaton today, we are now winners of 9 of our last 10 games.  295 enters the stretch run as the hottest team in the league.  We have pulled to within two games of 1st place Damascus and still have two games in hand, not to mention a head to head (still TBD).  Let's keep the bats hot and the pitching hotter as we move into the dog days of July.
