About the Team

The Roxbury Youth Track & Field team is a proud member of the Lakeland Youth Track & Field League, which includes 16 other teams from Morris, Warren, Sussex, and Union Counties. The Lakeland League is one of the premier youth track leagues in America. Track meets are held during April and May. We strive to develop both athletic skills and life skills, encouraging each athlete to reach their full potential in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Practice

Practice Schedule:
Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Practice Day Attire:
We recommend that athletes wear comfortable, athletic attire that allows for a full range of motion. The track can often be windy, and temperatures can vary, so dressing for the weather is important. It’s advisable to wear layers of breathable garments that can be easily added or removed as needed. A good pair of running shoes is essential.

Track Meets

Schedule:
Track meets will start in mid-April and will be added to the TeamSnap Schedule once available by the league. Generally, meets are held on Friday evenings at various locations in the Lakeland League. Please see the TeamSnap App for the schedule. Some meets will be held at Roxbury School, and others will be at various Morris/Sussex County high schools.

Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in the 800m, 50m, 200m, 4x100 relay, and Long Jump at most meets.

Meet Day Attire:
The Roxbury Recreation Department will provide each athlete with a team shirt. These shirts are based on the size information you provided during the registration process. For the bottoms, please have your child wear athletic shorts, pants, or similar attire. The preferred colors are navy blue, black, or gray to maintain a cohesive team appearance, but this is not mandatory. No jeans, please! A pair of quality athletic sneakers in good condition is essential. Remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Communication

We use TeamSnap for all team-related communications, including practice schedules, meet cancellations, and other important updates. Please ensure you check TeamSnap regularly, especially before practices and meets.

Code of Conduct

To maintain a positive atmosphere, all team coaches, athletes, and parents are required to adhere to the following code of conduct:

  • Be punctual and prepared for all scheduled practices and meets.
  • Listen to and follow the instructions of coaches and officials.
  • Show enthusiasm and a willingness to improve. Avoid negative comments or behaviors.
  • Refrain from using offensive or inappropriate language.
  • Care for the equipment and facilities we use, leaving them in good condition.
  • Support teammates and foster an inclusive environment for all members.

Good sportsmanship, appropriate behavior, and active participation are essential components of any athletic endeavor. If an athlete is unable to behave appropriately during a meet or practice, they will be required to sit with their parent or guardian until their next event. It is essential for parents and guardians to be present and proactive in addressing any behavioral issues that may arise. Repeated offenses or serious misconduct may lead to temporary suspension or expulsion from the team.

While volunteer coaches are dedicated to nurturing athletic skills and team spirit, it is not their primary responsibility to manage behavioral issues. Instead, this responsibility falls to the parents or guardians, who are expected to handle such situations promptly and effectively.

Parent Involvement

Parents/Guardians are required to walk their children to the track and pick them up for all practices and meets. Children will not be allowed to leave the track without a parent. You may arrange drop-off/pick-up with other parents. All parents must remain at the track during practices and meets.

We encourage parents to be actively involved in the program. Whether it's cheering or volunteering for meets, your support is vital to our success. Once meet dates are confirmed, we’ll send out a Sign-up Genius for volunteers needed for meet days. Possible positions include timers and field help for lining kids up, among others.

Thank you,
