BELGRADE – The inability for Anaconda pitchers to find the strike zone on Tuesday played right into the hands of the Belgrade Bandits.
Three Anaconda pitchers combined to walk 12 Belgrade batters and hit six more. It seemed that the pitches that did find the strike zone were battered all over the field as the Bandits rolled to a 23-2 win in American Legion action.
The Bandits are the type of team that will take advantage of any breaks that come their way, and the A’s were simply too obliging. Aside from their pitching woes, the Anaconda defense committed six errors.
Belgrade pounded out 15 hits in the win, with Christian Schrekengost collecting nine RBIs – including four in a 10-run fourth inning – to lead the rout.
Josh Gier drove in three runs for the Bandits, and three players finished with two RBIs.
One reason the A’s have been struggling on the mound of late is because of injuries. Sean Gallagher is scheduled to have x-rays on his injured shoulder later this week, and Cody Canfield injured his ankle while sliding earlier this week.
Gallagher was at Tuesday’s game but had his right arm in a sling. Canfield also made the trip to Belgrade but was using crutches to get around.
“He injured the same ankle last year at regionals,” Anaconda coach Matt Smith said of Canfield. “He said it’s not too bad but it’s swollen and pretty purple.”
Colton Powers and Keagan Morris are other options that Anaconda has but those two pitchers worked on Monday night in a doubleheader against Helena.
“Thank God we have a week off,” Smith added.
It would have been nicer for the A’s if that week off had started on Tuesday.
The Bandits didn’t waste any time in setting the tone. They jumped on Anaconda for five runs in the first inning and had a 7-0 lead after two.
Despite the lopsided score, the A’s didn’t exactly lay back and let the Bandits run all over them.
Powers reached base on an infield hit and stole second base. Carsen Meyer followed with a walk, and Powers was able to score on a double to left-center by Guy St. John.
Meyer took third on St. John’s double and scored on a passed ball.
The Bandits responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, and put the game away with the 10-spot in inning later.
“It gets frustrating when you’ve got no pitching,” Smith said. “When you have a lot of close games (on the schedule), it really hurts because you can’t keep using the same pitchers.”
Miles City Mavericks lost 12-1 on Wednesday at Glasgow, MT thanks to a no-hitter from Glasgow Reds' Thibault.
No Miles City Mavericks batter was able to locate Thibault's pitches during the game. Thibault threw a no-hitter, striking out six batters and walking three. He got Matthew Regan to strike out for the final out of the game.
The Glasgow Reds were sparked by Krumwiede and Padden, who teamed up for four hits and five RBIs.
The Glasgow Reds stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring eight runs on two errors, a sacrifice fly by Legare, and two singles.
In the fourth inning, Miles City Mavericks pushed across its only run of the day on an error.

A sacrifice fly by Vinny Smith, an RBI single by Jesse Walburn, a two-run triple by Austin Robins, and an error during the first inning and a single by Smith in the second inning fueled the Glacier Twins A's offense early.

Havre North Star's shortstop Travis Roth throws out a runner back on May 10 against the Glasgow Reds. Roth and the North Stars will be busy this weekend as they will play three games over the course of three days at the Havre Jamboree at Legion Field.
School is out, the weather is heating up and that means baseball is about to start in earnest for the boys of summer.
The Havre North Stars of the American Legion baseball league, have played just six games so far this season but are ready to ramp up their schedule, starting with three games this week.
Havre, which is taking part in the North Star Jamboree, will open its busy weekend Friday against the Lethbridge Giants at 6 p.m. Saturday, the North Stars will face the Strathmore Reds at 6 p.m. and will finish the jamboree Sunday against the Medicine Hat Majestics at 2 p.m. All games will be played at Legion Field.
In addition to the four teams listed above, the jamboree will also feature both the Glasgow A and Glasgow B team, as well as the Tri-County Cardinals, the Glacier Twins and the Fort Macleod Royals. All teams except Havre will play four games with the first pitch of the jamboree going out Friday at 2 p.m.
“I think that because these aren’t conference games, we can try some different things,” North Stars head coach Dick Fuzesy said. “We can try some kids at different positions, give some other kids a chance to play and see how things go. We want to win, especially when we are playing at home, but we can try some new things, too.”
Fuzesy didn’t say in what order he would use his pitchers, but he did say he is going to give the ball to ace Tyrell Pierce for one of the three games. Pierce is 0-2 to start the season and is coming off a disappointing outing against Medicine Hat. Yet, Fuzesy wants to give him a chance to redeem himself in front of the home crowd.TY
“It’s kind of his night, with him being one of the only seniors,” Fuzesy said. “I want to give him the chance to pitch under the lights. That’s something the kids are excited about. He will have a shorter pitch count than usual because we don’t want to overwork him in a non-conference game but he will be excited to pitch at home.”
Others who are likely to start for the North Stars this weekend include Jeff Miller, who is 1-0 on the season and Dylan Carpenter, who also boasts a 1-0 record. Jerod Boles, Ryne Antley and Brenden Danielson are also possibilities to start and may also see time in relief.
In addition to pitching occasionally and playing center field, Antley is also the team’s leading hitter through six games with an average of .562. But, catcher Jake Sedhal is not far behind and is hitting .545. Sedhal also leads the team or is tied for the team lead in total hits, doubles, runs batted in and runs scored.
Havre will also have third baseman Gavin Gunderson back this week after missing him for the last four games to do a high school football all-star game. Gunderson and short stop Travis Roth, along with Boles at second and Miller at first, have proven to be solid defensively and have committed just three errors in six games.
“The hitting was the one thing I was a little worried about coming into the season and in Great Falls,” Fuzesy said. “But I think we are starting to take the right approach at the plate and thinking when we are up there. You have to know when you are down 0-2 that you need to swing the bat, so we are just trying to fine tune things like that and keep doing the little things. But so far I have been really happy with our hitting and our defense.”
Fuzesy said he also wants to see more of Trey Murphy, who is hitting .357 in 16 at-bats so far this season. T.J. Lovenguth will also start in right field, while Nic Tanner, Tanner Hentschel, Kyle Gooch, and Cole Keller will also see the field for the North Stars.
The North Star jamboree begins Friday at 2 p.m., with the North Stars opening game coming at 6 p.m.
LAUREL -- The Laurel Dodgers found out recently they have been selected to host the 2016 Class A American Legion Baseball Northwest Regional.
Every seven years, it is Montana's turn to host and Laurel put in a bid. Teams from the Treasure State, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Oregon and Alaska comprise the Northwest Region.
According to Laurel coach Doug Studiner, Laurel has never hosted the tourney. Laurel has been the Class A state champion four times since 2009, so the Dodgers are familiar with the level of baseball played.
"We are really excited to bring it to Eastern Montana," Studiner said. "I don't believe there has ever been an Eastern Montana team to host it.
"We are real excited for our program and the community and Eastern Montana to see some quality baseball."
The tourney will be held in August, 2016, at Thomson Park after the Montana Class A state tourney. The dates will be announced with next year's schedule.
In Class A, Studiner said the Northwest Region is the only one to have a regional. There is no Class A World Series, like there is in the Class AA.
Laurel will be the regional host team. The Class A state champion from Montana will also qualify. If Laurel were to win the state title, the state runner-up would advance to regionals.

DEER LODGE - After battling injuries and sweltering heat all weekend long, a late deficit felt like nothing for the Deer Lodge Wranglers on Sunday afternoon.
The Wranglers rallied to erase a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth after giving up the lead in the top of the inning, using four-straight two-out hits to pull out a 6-3 win over the Havre North Stars in the championship game of the Mike Walsh Memorial Wood Bat Tournament, capping off a 5-0 weekend on their home field.
"We grinded out five different games in this tournament," Wranglers manager Jeff Crowe said. "We had five different lineups, and we just really came together this weekend as a team and supported each other.
"Everyone came through when we needed something."
The Wranglers held a 2-1 lead through five innings thanks to the pitching of Taylor Stone. But in the top of the sixth, back-to-back errors set the stage for Ryne Antley, who ripped a two-run double to the fence in center to give the North Stars a 3-2 lead.
Antley also added an RBI single and had all three RBIs for Havre.
The lead could have been larger, but the Wranglers regrouped two batters later to turn a 4-6-3 double play behind Stone to limit the damage.
"That double play was huge for us," Crowe said. "I think that really helped to change the momentum back in our favor and get us going."
The Wranglers responded in the bottom of the sixth when Stone and Sheldon Danforth each picked up one-out singles to put two on.
After a fly out to center, Chase Steyh stepped in and found a hole up the middle to bring in Stone with his second RBI of the game, tying the game at 3-3.
Crowe then turned to his bench, bringing up Porter Struble to pinch-hit. Struble came up big, finding a hole on the left side to bring in Danforth, giving the Wranglers back the lead, 4-3.
"That pinch-hit was huge," Crowe said. "We'd been waiting for that from the lower half of our lineup."
After Kenny Stryker singled to load the bases, Logan Danforth came through with a big two-run single to give the Wranglers some insurance, stretching the lead to the final margin, 6-3.
"They knew they had to score some runs," Crowe said. "That two out rally did it for us, we had a couple of those in this tournament. With two outs we seemed to turn it on."
The rally redeem the Wranglers' defense and Stone, who was dominant all game for the hosts.
Stone tossed all seven innings, giving up just four hits, one earned run and racking up 12 strikeouts. At one point, Stone set down seven consecutive batters via strikeout.
"Taylor Stone threw an outstanding game," Crowe said. "That was a big part of our success today, that's the best game he's thrown this year."
The Wranglers held a 2-1 lead through five thanks to their ability to manufacture runs earlier in the game, with Steyh collecting a two-out hit in the second to tie the game 1-1, then Kaehl Lowery driving in a run on a ground out in the third.
The score stayed at 2-1 until the dramatic sixth inning.
