League History
Subscribe to our NewsletterThe Woonsocket Coed Softball League was established in 2007 from the former Woonsocket CYO Softball League.
League administrators Jay DelToro and Scott Hustler offered to take over the league when the Fr. Marot CYO of Woonsocket no longer wanted to run it. The Woonsocket CYO Softball League operated for 13 years (1994-2006) under the direction of Roland Berard, the Administrator at the Fr. Marot CYO Center.
At its beginning The Woonsocket CYO Softball League was a 4 team league that was organized with individual players from area catholic churches that wanted to play in a fun league. Through the late 1990's and early 2000's the league began expanding with the churches putting together their own teams and entering those into the league. As the league moved into the mid 2000's more competitive teams began to register for the league. By 2006 the league had expanded to 16 teams, but many no longer had any affiliation with the area churches prompting the Fr. Marot CYO to no longer want to run the league.
Recognizing the need to keep the league going for those teams that had been participating, Jay DelToro (one of the team captains) and Scott Hustler (one of the umpires in the league) offered to take over as administrators in 2007. As Woonsocket Coed Softball took over, the league quickly expanded to 20 teams. Recognizing the difference in skill level with the newer competitive teams compared to those recreational teams that had been playing in the league for years, the league began splitting into divisions based on skill level. The administrators also recognized the need to officially sanction the league with a national softball organization. It operated under ASA softball 2007-2010, which was then replaced by USSSA in 2011.
Woonsocket Coed Softball regularly has 20-25 teams in its spring/summer league. For the first time a fall league was offered in 2013 with 8 teams participating. Woonsocket Coed Softball is one of the largest and inexpensive coed leagues in the state of Rhode Island.
