The Burlington Bulls kept every single player from the 2006 season and added SABL star SS/P/C Andrew Swagers, as well as Jamie Kozak who had pitched 2 games for the Bulls in 2006.

The first weekend, saw a familiar rotation as Leyland and McKnight both took opening day starts vs the Tigers. Game 1 was a 6-5 Bulls win where the D was a little shaky, and then an 8-3 win in game 2. Kozak and Swagers each pitched an inning in relief as the Bulls went to 6-0 on opening day.

The following day, one of the Bulls aces, Jon Leyland, suffered an injury to his finger in a football game and would miss quite a bit of time for the Bulls.

The next weekend, the Bengals came to town and Kozak had his first start of the year. The game was 0-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, when wild pitches on an intentional walk to Swagers, allowed the Bulls to score the winning run. Game 2, was another gem. Conlon pitched well, but Menenzes was equally strong for the Bengals and they stranded 10 runners losing 2-1.

The schedule didn’t get any easier for the Bulls as they the Stars came to town in a rematch of last season’s conference finals. The Bulls lost a very close first game with McKnight and DeWolfe duelling in a 3-2 Stars win. Bulls came back strong behind Kozak in Game 2 and win 6-2.

Bulls then travelled to Mississauga to face the expansion Majors where they swept, 15-6 and 6-3. It was McKnight and Conlon getting the wins.

The always much anticipated series with Richmond Hill was next and the Bulls and McKnight rolled to a 10-1 win. Game 2 was all Richmond Hill and Kozak had a rough outing and the Bulls lost 8-1.

Jays came to town, and the Bulls swept 6-1 and 5-4. Kozak and Swagers get the wins (Swagers K’s 15 in 7 innings)

A rematch with the Bengals was all Bulls, 12-0 mercy win (3 HR’s for Bulls) and 9-1 in game 2 where in the 7th inning Swagers, Kozak, Howden and Hogan all go back to back.

At the halfway point, the Bulls were 11-3.

They moved on to sweep the Giants, 9-4 (McKnight win) and 16-0 (Swagers) win.

Next, was the OSBA tournament in Barrie, where the Bulls were looking to defend their title. Bulls had a great round robin beat their rival Hamilton Pirates, then a Brampton team and the embarrassing Oshawa Updogs. Playoffs were better baseball as the Bulls beat the Bengals, Miss. Jays in semis and then lost to an amalgamated OSBA Whitby/Brooklin/Scarborough team in the finals by 1 run.

The Talons came to town next and, as always, the Bulls spit a series they could have swept. Leyland made his return to the mound in Game 1 and wasn’t his usual effective self as the Bulls lost 6-5 in 8 innings after a Howden homerun in the 7th forced extra innings. Cam went a complete game in Game 2 as the Bulls came away with a 12-2 mercy win.

Another tournament, this time the Bulls first ever wood bat tournament in Ottawa. The Bulls had found out in ’06 just how tough this tournament was, and this time, they were ready for it. The Bulls and McKnight dropped Game 1, 5-1 vs the Brewers making their next 2 round robin games must wins which the Bulls did. Conlon getting a 4-3 win over the Deuces with Swagers saving it. Game 3 was dominated by Kozak on the mound as the Bulls won 4-1 vs the Panthers and moved in to the semi-finals. The semi’s was an epic game vs the New Lowell Knights. Swagers started and went 9 innings. The Bulls were down 1 going into the 7th, when Swagers helped his cause with a solo shot. In the top of the 9th, the Knights scored 2 and the Bulls looked to be on the verge of elimination when they stormed back with key hits from Kip Keith, Swagers and Pitman before an Eric Conlon 1 out single scoring 2 and gave the Bulls a come from behind 8-7 win. The final was a rematch of Game 1 vs the Brewers and McKnight again getting the start. He was much better in this outing holding the Brewers to 1 run. With the score tied at 1 in the bottom of the 7th and Guy on 2nd with 2 out. Swagers was intentionally walked bringing Pitman to the plate vs Charbonneau, the ace of the Ottawa league. Pitman took a pitch the other way and Guy raced home to give the Bulls a thrilling championship and one of the most memorable victories in the Bulls history.

Returning home, it was back to business and the Bulls face the Majors next. Game 1 was a mercy win, 12-2 with a Kozak complete game win. The offence wasn’t there for Conlon in Game 2 and he lost a 3-2 game.

The Bulls played a very wet doubleheader vs the Twins the following weekend and won Game 1 11-8 with Conlon getting the win and Guy the save. Pitman got the game 2 start and was effective enough, with a save by Mousseau to give the Bulls an 8-7 win and the sweep.

The winning streak continued vs the Giants, 7-1 with a Conlon game 1 win and 11-1 with a Willitts game 2 win.

Bulls travelled back to Barrie and McKnight, fresh off suspension, pitched a complete game and won 12-0. In game 2, the Bulls threw the kitchen sink, Pitman, Langford, Howden and Kip for a 23-13 win.

The Bulls had clinched the division at this point and finished out the schedule vs Whitby were callup Matt Webster pitched a 5-3 win in Game 1 and Cam McKnight relieved Conlon to get the Game 2 win 12-8.

The Bulls finished the regular season at 23-5 (the most wins in OSBA history). They had scored the most runs of all 16 teams and allowed the least. They looked primed for another playoff run, but the Bengals and Jon Menenzes had other ideas. Leyland and Menenzes locked up in Game 1 and despite only allowing 1 run, the Bulls couldn’t get a key hit and lost 1-0. In Game 2, Kozak suffered the same fate. Allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but Andrew McDermid pitched out of trouble in almost every inning until the 7th when Menenzes came on with 2 Bulls on to face the Bulls 2 and 3 hitters. Kip struck out and Swagers grounded out to end the 2007 season in disappointing fashion.

The Bulls got one more chance to go out as winners though in the Brooklin/Whitby Invitational tournament. The Bulls rolled the round robin beat Brampton, Brooklin and SABL with Swagers, McKnight and Conlon getting the wins. In the semi’s the Bulls faced off vs Whitby and Malyk was ineffective early giving way to McKnight who picked up the win as the Bulls won 6-3 in the only game they trailed in the whole tournament (for ½ an inning) In the finals, the Bulls faced off against the Stars and it was a close game until the Stars missed a double play and the Bulls capitalized, Kozak threw a shutout and the Bulls year ended with a 5-0 victory and another tournament championship.

The Bulls overall record during the year was 37-9 and despite a bad weekend vs the Bengals, the season was arguable the best in Bulls history.
